These days, I absolutely love my Porsche Panamera. My older brother, who\u2019s two years ahead of me, has been a devoted Subaru fan for as long as I can remember and still drives a manual-transmission Legacy. (Apparently, he has his eye on a Levorg now.)<\/span> You might think I grew up loving cars, but that couldn\u2019t be further from the truth. I had absolutely no interest in cars, and for about ten years after getting my driver\u2019s license, I barely drove at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n To put it bluntly, I thought \u201ccars are a useless burden that do nothing but cost money to maintain, so I definitely don\u2019t need one.\u201d<\/strong> And if I\u2019m being even more honest, I used to look down on people who bought luxury cars or spent a lot on their cars, thinking \u201cthey must be crazy.\u201d<\/strong> (Sorry!)<\/span><\/p>\n The person who first got me interested in cars was my husband.<\/p>\n I met my husband seven years ago, when I was 28. He\u2019s a devoted car enthusiast. He once bought a movie on DVD simply because \u201ca car I\u2019m interested in appears on screen for one minute.\u201d<\/strong> On weekends, he\u2019d spend hours watching episodes of *Car Graphic TV* he\u2019d recorded\u2014and sometimes replay the same one over and over.<\/p>\n Air-cooled engines, why naturally aspirated is better than turbo, how an engine\u2019s sound is music rather than noise\u2014he genuinely, wholeheartedly loves cars.<\/p>\n When we\u2019d only been dating a short time, he was driving an old navy-blue BMW 318i. He\u2019d often say things like \u201cI just love this front end\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cHome already? I haven\u2019t had enough driving yet! I could keep going forever in this car!\u201d<\/strong> Listening to him, I thought, \u201cWhat a strange guy.\u201d<\/p>\n I\u2019d tell him things like, \u201cA car just needs to get you from A to B. Actually, I don\u2019t even need one.\u201d His response was often a spirited \u201cNo, you\u2019re wrong! You don\u2019t know the first thing about cars!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n After that, almost every weekend, he\u2019d take me out for a drive (we never once traveled by train)<\/span> and give me enthusiast-level commentary like:<\/p>\n \u201cGerman cars are in a different league when it comes to stability at highway speeds.\u201d Sometimes we\u2019d take a Japanese car instead, and he\u2019d explain:<\/p>\n \u201cJapanese cars aren\u2019t designed with Autobahn driving in mind, like German cars are, so they don\u2019t feel as stable on the highway. They might be fine around town, but when you consider highway driving, a lot of ordinary Japanese cars can be pretty dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n Every weekend felt like I was being made to sit through a *Car Graphic TV* road-test review. I used to think, \u201cWhy not just put all this on YouTube?\u201d<\/p>\n That went on for a while. Then we got married, and, little by little, I was converted by my husband (lol) and started to understand the differences between cars. These days, I\u2019m a full-fledged Panamera fan.<\/p>\n Every now and then, I see comments online or hear people around me say things like:<\/p>\n \u201cMy wife was against me getting a sports car, so I bought a minivan where the kids can ride comfortably and we can fit all our luggage.\u201d But I don\u2019t think it\u2019s usually the wife\u2019s fault. More often, the husband is the one who needs to do some work. In other words:<\/p>\n The real issue is a lack of passion, commitment, evidence, and persuasive power to win your wife over.<\/span><\/p>\n If you truly want a sports car, you\u2019ll find a way to make it happen. Even if you\u2019re turned down again and again, you\u2019ll rethink your approach and keep trying until you can buy one.<\/p>\n That\u2019s why I\u2019ve written about how my husband won over someone like me, who had no interest in cars, and eventually got us to buy a Porsche.
