Your Favorite Car\u2014and Your Ideal Woman?<\/h3>\n

My husband once told me:<\/p>\n

\u201cA man\u2019s taste in cars often has a lot in common with the kind of woman he\u2019s attracted to. Based on my own observations over the years, I\u2019d say there\u2019s a lot of truth to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d never heard that theory before, but I decided to test it. \u201cSo what about guys who love Ferraris?\u201d<\/strong> I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey care about looks and like to stand out. To them, a car is part of their style, so they\u2019re drawn to women who are beautiful and glamorous\u2014like models.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well… now that he said it, I could kind of see what he meant.<\/p>\n

A Few More Examples<\/h3>\n

All right, then… \u201cWhat about someone who loves classic cars?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s see… Older cars break down more often and cost a lot to maintain. So maybe they like women who need constant attention, expect a gift for every anniversary, and keep them on their toes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fair enough. \u201cThen what about someone who likes the Prius?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe he wants a woman who doesn\u2019t cost much or demand a lot of attention\u2014someone who won\u2019t waste money, even after they get married.\u201d<\/p>\n

I see.
\n\u201cAnd what about someone who says they don\u2019t care what kind of car they drive?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re probably not interested in women. They\u2019re just not someone who cares about that kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

…Is that really how it works?<\/p>\n

What Does My Husband\u2019s Taste in Cars Say About Him?<\/h3>\n

Then I started to wonder.<\/p>\n

If a man\u2019s taste in cars matches the kind of woman he likes, does that mean \u201cmy husband\u2019s ideal car = me\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019d be pretty disappointed if it turned out we had nothing in common, so I decided to figure it out on my own rather than ask him. My husband loves Porsches and can\u2019t stop raving about the 981 Boxster GTS he owns. I wrote more about how he feels about his Boxster in this article:<\/p>\n

Thinking back, here are some of the things he often says:<\/p>\n

\u2460 The Boxster is fun to drive because its steering is precise down to the last millimeter.
\n\u2461 Driving with the top down and the open road ahead is so much fun.
\n\u2462 I love the engine sound. It\u2019s not some obnoxious roar\u2014it\u2019s music.
\n\u2463 It would be amazing to drive the Boxster along Germany\u2019s Romantic Road.
\n\u2464 It\u2019s not just a car. It\u2019s my partner.
\n\u2465 I don\u2019t worry about fuel economy, but for the way it drives, it\u2019s actually pretty good.
\n\u2466 A light-colored interior shows dirt, so you\u2019re always wiping it down. Black is great because the dirt doesn\u2019t show.
\n\u2467 It\u2019s great because you don\u2019t see many of them around town.
\n\u2468 Even if I get too old to get around easily, I want to keep driving this Boxster.<\/p>\n

So what do those things look like when you translate them into the kind of woman he likes?<\/p>\n

\u2460 A woman who\u2019s fun to talk to and always on the same wavelength
\n\u2461 A woman who makes him feel free to be himself
\n\u2462 A woman with a lovely voice
\n\u2463 A woman he could take on a drive along Germany\u2019s Romantic Road
\n\u2464 A partner as much as a wife
\n\u2465 A woman who isn\u2019t obsessed with saving money, but doesn\u2019t waste it either
\n\u2466 A woman who doesn\u2019t need constant attention and can handle whatever life throws at her
\n\u2467 A woman who\u2019s one of a kind
\n\u2468 A woman he can enjoy spending time with, even when he\u2019s an old man<\/p>\n

Is that what he means?<\/p>\n

Am I the Boxster\u2019s Match?<\/h3>\n

Now for the important part: does this ideal woman sound anything like me? That\u2019s what really matters. If we\u2019re completely different… well, I guess that\u2019s just how it is. So I went through the list, one item at a time.<\/p>\n

\u2460 A woman who\u2019s fun to talk to and always on the same wavelength
\n\u2192 I think we share a similar sense of humor and outlook on life.
\n\u2461 A woman who makes him feel free to be himself
\n\u2192 Judging by how we act around each other day to day, I don\u2019t think he feels uncomfortable with me.
\n\u2462 A woman with a lovely voice
\n\u2192 Hard to say… But a long time ago, my husband did tell me, \u201cYour voice sounds like Megumi Yasu.\u201d (Sadly, he meant my voice\u2014not my face! lol)<\/span>
\n\u2463 A woman he could take on a drive along Germany\u2019s Romantic Road
\n\u2192 We\u2019ve actually done that together.
\n\u2464 A partner as much as a wife
\n\u2192 That\u2019s not entirely off the mark. We feel more like a team than a traditional married couple.
\n\u2465 A woman who isn\u2019t obsessed with saving money, but doesn\u2019t waste it either
\n\u2192 I\u2019m not great at saving, but I\u2019m happy with Uniqlo clothes and a meal at Gusto.
\n\u2466 A woman who doesn\u2019t need constant attention and can handle whatever life throws at her
\n\u2192 I don\u2019t care much about anniversaries. In fact, I usually forget them.
\n\u2467 A woman who\u2019s one of a kind
\n\u2192 I\u2019m probably not what most people think of as a typical woman. I don\u2019t have many friends I really click with\u2014and I\u2019m fine with that. (lol)
\n\u2468 A woman he can enjoy spending time with, even when he\u2019s an old man
\n\u2192 I hope I can be that kind of person.<\/p>\n

Maybe his theory isn\u2019t so far off after all. My husband values living a rich and fulfilling life, and he doesn\u2019t care much about conventional expectations. I suspect he looks for that same kind of independent spirit in a woman, too (though I\u2019ve never actually asked him).<\/span><\/p>\n
