I\u2019ve given it some thought. A couple\u2019s shared goal is to <strong>\u201cbuy the best car for them at a fair price.\u201d<\/strong> The salesperson, meanwhile, is probably hoping to <strong>\u201csell the customer a car for as close to the sticker price as possible.\u201d<\/strong> With those competing goals in mind, I think the wife\u2019s approach can make a big difference to both her husband and the salesperson.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">What Kind of Car Buyer Is She?<\/h3>\n<p>After you\u2019re shown to your seats and your husband and the salesperson have chatted for a while about your current car and other small talk, the salesperson may ask, <strong>\u201cDo you drive often, too?\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cIs the car you\u2019re looking for this time mainly for you?\u201d<\/strong> How the wife responds can shape the way the rest of the sales conversation goes. For example, I\u2019d loosely group her approach into these four types:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><strong>\u2460 \u201cI\u2019ll leave it to my husband\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nExample: I don\u2019t know much about cars, and my husband is paying, so I\u2019ll leave it to him.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2461 \u201cEasy to drive and park\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nExample: I\u2019d like something compact and cute that\u2019s easy to drive and maneuver.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2462 \u201cWe need a proper family car\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nExample: I want a car with plenty of room for luggage, space for the kids, and good fuel economy.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2463 \u201cI know my way around cars\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nExample: High-speed stability matters, and I care about handling and throttle response, too.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine types \u2460 and \u2461 are easier for a salesperson to deal with. With types \u2462 and \u2463, the wife has more of a say, which might make things a little more complicated for the salesperson\u2026 haha. I\u2019d say I fall into category \u2463. The last time we visited a dealership, I\u2019d been quiet at first, but then the salesperson turned to me and asked, \u201cAnd what about you, ma\u2019am?\u201d So I said something along the lines of:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><strong>\u201cThe [model] [model name] I test-drove before had way too much slack in the accelerator, and the steering felt vague. It had none of that \u2018oneness between car and driver\u2019 feeling, so I knew it wasn\u2019t for me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After that, I felt the salesperson\u2019s tone change noticeably. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Maybe he realized I was going to be a bit of a handful\u2026)<\/span> Either way, to avoid wasting anyone\u2019s time, I think it\u2019s best to <strong>be upfront early on about your opinions and what kind of role you want to take as a wife<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Be Your Husband\u2019s Wingwoman<\/h3>\n<p>Once the salesperson understands your approach, the next thing to keep in mind is to <strong>\u201chave your husband\u2019s back.\u201d<\/strong> This is where a wife can really show her skill, haha. Even if your husband is interested in the car and seriously considering buying it, once the salesperson decides, \u201cHe\u2019ll buy if I just push a little,\u201d they may start pressuring him to make a decision before he\u2019s ready.<\/p>\n<p>When that happens, he may not get to ask everything he wants to, making it harder to gather all the information he needs and make a sound decision. To prevent that, it helps to <strong>bring up anything your husband wants to ask, forgot to ask, or wants to say<\/strong> to the salesperson. The questions you ask will depend on what kind of car your family is looking for, but these are the things I\u2019d want to know:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u30fbHow much value is the car likely to lose when it\u2019s time to sell?<br \/>\n\u30fbWhat kind of fuel economy can we expect in real-world driving, rather than the official figure?<br \/>\n\u30fbHow does it compare with competing models from other manufacturers?<br \/>\n\u30fbWhat\u2019s the estimated delivery time and schedule?<br \/>\n\u30fbIf we explain what we expect from the car, do you think our expectations are realistic?<br \/>\n\u30fbHow stable is it at highway speeds, and can we take it for a test drive on the highway?<br \/>\n\u30fbRoughly how much of a discount might be possible?<br \/>\n\u30fbWe\u2019re also considering the [model] and [model] from other manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>A salesperson who can answer these questions clearly will earn my trust. But if they can\u2019t answer, don\u2019t know the details, or seem underprepared, that can also be a sign that <strong>\u201cmaybe we shouldn\u2019t buy from this salesperson.\u201d<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I know, I sound like a difficult customer\u2026 sorry!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve asked your questions and have a clearer picture of anything that was uncertain, you can take your time and think it over at home. If anything else comes up, you can always call or email. So, while saying something like, \u201cWell, we should probably get going,\u201d you can start looking for a good moment to wrap up the visit.<\/p>\n<p>That was the approach I tried to follow\u2014until we went to buy the Panamera. Then my carefully considered role as a wife went completely off the rails.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">What Was I Like When We Bought the Panamera?<\/h3>\n<p>We were deciding between a BMW 7 Series and a Porsche Panamera. I wrote about how that went in the article below:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/2017\/06\/15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2192 Related article: How I Could Tell the Difference Between the Porsche Panamera and BMW 7 Series in Two Seconds<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After test-driving the Panamera, we went back to the dealership to discuss the details. Ordering a car built to our own specifications would mean <strong>a long wait for delivery<\/strong>, so we decided to choose from the Panameras the dealership already had in stock.<\/p>\n<p>My husband\u2019s attitude was, <strong>\u201cLet\u2019s go have a look today. If we don\u2019t find the right one, we can wait for another to come along.\u201d<\/strong> But I wanted a Panamera so badly\u2014and one of the cars they showed us gave me that instant \u201cthis is the one!\u201d feeling. I got so excited that I completely forgot about my usual approach as a wife and started saying things like:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u30fbOh, so this is the only one you have, right?<br \/>\n\u30fbIf someone else comes along wanting it, does that mean we won\u2019t be able to buy it?<br \/>\n\u30fbWow, I have a feeling this one\u2019s meant to be. I want this one!<\/p>\n<p>Instead of having my husband\u2019s back, I ended up giving all my support to our salesperson, H\u2014and we bought the car right away\u2026 That\u2019s the Panamera sitting in our driveway today.
