Hitchhikers<\/h3>\n

When summer vacation rolls around, I seem to run into hitchhiking kids all the time. They\u2019re usually standing near a highway entrance, holding a sign with their destination written on it. I came across one yesterday as I was getting on the highway, and there\u2019s something I\u2019d like to tell them.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re standing in the wrong place (-_-)<\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday\u2019s hitchhiker was holding a sign for somewhere in the opposite direction from where I was going, so I couldn\u2019t give him a lift. But if we\u2019d been headed the same way, and he\u2019d seemed like someone I could safely pick up, I wouldn\u2019t have been opposed to stopping.<\/p>\n

The problem is, they\u2019re all standing in the wrong place.<\/p>\n

Cars can\u2019t stop on a dime.<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019re usually right before the road that turns toward the highway toll plaza. By the time you spot them near the ETC lanes or the entrance just around the corner, there\u2019s no time to decide to stop\u2014and there\u2019s nowhere to pull over anyway.<\/p>\n

Stopping there would also inconvenience the drivers behind you. You almost never see cars pulling over just before a highway entrance, and slamming on the brakes could easily cause a crash. That would be a serious situation.<\/p>\n

I may sound like a heartless, cold-blooded person, but I don\u2019t see why I should inconvenience the drivers behind me and risk causing an accident just to stop for a teenage stranger\u2026<\/p>\n

Still, I suppose you wouldn\u2019t understand unless you\u2019d driven a car yourself, so I can\u2019t really blame them.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Going Through Their Heads?<\/h3>\n

And on the other hand, I imagine they\u2019re thinking something like this:<\/p>\n

Why are the adults in this world so heartless?<\/em>
\nA 15-year-old is out here,<\/em>
\ndoing his best in the blazing sun,<\/em>
\nand not a single person will stop.<\/em>
\nThere\u2019s an empty passenger seat.<\/em>
\nNo one\u2019s even in the back seat.<\/em>
\nAre there no warmhearted adults willing to pull over?<\/em>
\nIs this really all the world has to offer?<\/em><\/p>\n

Something like that.<\/p>\n

No, that\u2019s not it.<\/span><\/p>\n

If they stood a little farther back\u2014somewhere around the \u201chighway entrance in 200 meters\u201d point, where there\u2019s room for a car to pull over\u2014I bet three times as many drivers would stop.<\/p>\n

Hitchhiking around the country is the very essence of youth: a wonderful adventure you can only have now. And that\u2019s exactly why I find myself thinking, with all the well-meaning concern of an old lady, that if they gave a little more thought to where cars can safely stop, they might make even more amazing memories.<\/p>\n
