The driver\u2019s seat had also been replaced with a bucket seat, but otherwise the car was essentially stock.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_3653-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"HKS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Clutch_Feel_and_First_Impressions\"><\/span>Clutch Feel and First Impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first thing I noticed when I got in was how quickly the clutch engaged.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with a Porsche, it seemed to bite after lifting the pedal just a little. That doesn\u2019t make it difficult to drive\u2014in fact, it feels easy to use, and it\u2019s not especially prone to stalling. The clutch is also very easy to modulate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_3642-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u30ed\u30fc\u30c9\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After turning through the first few corners, I was already impressed. <strong>\u201cHas the Miata always been this much fun?\u201d<\/strong> was the thought that came to mind.<br \/>\nIt turns beautifully, with a response that\u2019s sharp but never twitchy\u2014a remarkably well-judged balance.<\/p>\n<p>As you begin to turn the wheel, the car follows your input with precision.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s no slop, and it\u2019s exceptionally easy to place. Once you add a little more steering lock, it starts to tuck into the corner with a slight <strong>oversteer<\/strong> feel. That might make a novice driver a little nervous, but the way the car pivots so readily is a big part of the fun.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Handling_and_Driving_Feel\"><\/span>Handling and Driving Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the Miata I drove before, compared with a Porsche Boxster, the car seemed to rotate around a point farther forward. <strong>This time, the rotation felt as if it happened behind me.<\/strong> That may come down to the suspension: the previous car had Bilstein B12 components, while this one was fitted with HKS suspension.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to find another car that makes every corner more enjoyable than the last. Just like a Porsche, it leaves you wishing <strong>\u201cthe corners would just keep coming.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_3649-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u30ed\u30fc\u30c9\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The engine doesn\u2019t feel short on power as long as you keep it in the rev range.<br \/>\n<strong>Its power delivery and gearing feel just right for Japan\u2019s narrow mountain roads and winding routes.<\/strong> A Porsche can feel a little tall-geared in these conditions, leaving you wishing you could rev it out more. In the Miata, you can happily work the engine from the midrange all the way to the top.<\/p>\n<p>On the road, it never feels slow, even if, objectively speaking, it isn\u2019t especially fast.<br \/>\nBut that hardly matters when it\u2019s so satisfying to use all the power the engine has. It\u2019s a kind of fun you don\u2019t get from a super sportscar or supercar. The Miata reminds you that <strong>there\u2019s more to a car than power<\/strong>\u2014and in that sense, it\u2019s <strong>a car for grown-ups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Appeal_of_the_Engine_Sound\"><\/span>The Appeal of the Engine Sound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The engine note didn\u2019t leave much of an impression on me the first time I drove a Miata. This time, though, I found it genuinely pleasant. It\u2019s audible without being loud, and it doesn\u2019t try to stir up big emotions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Miata\u2019s engine note is more like background music.<\/strong> If a Porsche\u2019s engine note is a \u201csong,\u201d the Miata\u2019s is \u201cBGM\u201d: <strong>it never gets in the way, but adds color to the drive.<\/strong> Even on a long trip, it would never wear you down\u2014instead, it makes you want to keep driving.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_3647-960x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"\u30ed\u30fc\u30c9\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brake_Feel_and_Performance\"><\/span>Brake Feel and Performance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The brakes left a better impression than they did on my previous test drive. They don\u2019t feel quite as substantial as a Porsche\u2019s, but the pedal has a reassuring, firm feel. Rather than relying on pedal travel, it\u2019s easy to adjust braking force by how hard you press. That makes the car easy and enjoyable to drive.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to modulate the stopping power, and <strong>you quickly get a feel for how much deceleration you\u2019ll get from a given amount of pressure.<\/strong> That\u2019s another detail that adds to the driving enjoyment.<\/p>\n<p>I also tried a full-throttle acceleration run. It\u2019s certainly not exceptionally quick, but <strong>given the realities of driving in Japan, this level of acceleration feels just right.<\/strong> It\u2019s safe and usable\u2014not too slow, not too fast\u2014while still letting you carry impressive speed through corners.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_3641-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u30ed\u30fc\u30c9\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Body_Rigidity_and_Overall_Verdict\"><\/span>Body Rigidity and Overall Verdict<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The body feels impressively rigid, showcasing the very best of Mazda\u2019s engineering. I noticed the same thing when I drove an NC Miata in the past: <strong>Mazda\u2019s ability to build such a rigid convertible is something the company can be proud of on a global scale.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Overall, the ND Miata is an exceptionally well-engineered car. I can find things to criticize in some of Mazda\u2019s other models, but the Miata feels like a different class of car altogether. <strong>When Mazda can build something this good, it\u2019s hard not to wonder why the rest of its lineup can\u2019t be just as impressive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_3651-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u30ed\u30fc\u30c9\u30b9\u30bf\u30fc\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In terms of driving enjoyment, the Miata has a lot in common with the Porsche Boxster, especially the 986-generation model.<br \/>\nBut I felt the Miata was better suited to Japan\u2019s winding roads. Its engine power and gearing are a better match for the roads here.<\/p>\n<p>At high speeds, however, its straight-line stability doesn\u2019t quite match that of European cars. In fact, <strong>I\u2019m not sure that\u2019s what the Miata is trying to achieve.<\/strong><br \/>\nIt doesn\u2019t feel unstable, but it doesn\u2019t have the Boxster\u2019s sense of becoming more settled as your speed rises. For Japan\u2019s mountain roads, winding routes, and rural highways, though, <strong>the ND Miata is an ideal car.<\/strong> It\u2019s also a joy to drive with the top down, with less wind buffeting than in the Boxster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m certain I\u2019ll buy a Miata someday.<\/strong><br \/>\nThat\u2019s how compelling it was.
