A Company Culture All Its Own<\/h3>\n

At the company I joined straight out of college, the prevailing attitude was: \u201cCars are for bosses who treat them as toys.<\/strong> Spending money on a car is out of the question!\u201d<\/strong> (Some company culture, huh?)<\/span> The founder and president at the time had started out as a live-in apprentice, overcome all kinds of hardships, and built a staffing company from the ground up. So the workplace had a deeply ingrained ethos of:<\/p>\n

\u201cNo luxuries. Hard work is a virtue. Work 24\/7, 365 days a year.\u201d<\/p>\n

(By today\u2019s standards, it was definitely a toxic workplace\u2014but we had our share of fun, too.)<\/span><\/p>\n

The president often told clients things like, \u201cYou\u2019re taking business for granted if you buy a luxury car! Sell the whole lot!\u201d I was a \u201cpure\u201d new graduate back then, so I naturally came to think that the president considered luxury cars a bad thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the time I joined the company, I worked in sales, securing training and consulting contracts with business owners. Many of the presidents at our client companies would say things like \u201cAn old car is good enough for company use,\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cWhen we make a profit, we should give back to our employees and customers.\u201d<\/strong> I listened and thought, \u201cThey\u2019re all such good people\u2014almost saints.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, I rarely saw foreign or luxury cars parked at their offices.<\/p>\n

What I Learned After Leaving the Company<\/h3>\n

Some time later, I left the company. Around then, Facebook started taking off, and many of the presidents I\u2019d worked with sent me friend requests. As I casually browsed my feed, I realized something:<\/p>\n

They owned a ton of luxury cars for personal use.<\/p>\n

Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus, Porsche, Ferrari, Audi\u2026<\/p>\n

They\u2019d post photos with a car somewhere in the frame, along with captions like \u201cBought a new car\u201d or \u201cWent for a drive with the family.\u201d I began to see that even if they hadn\u2019t shown their cars to salespeople back then, many of them had owned luxury cars privately all along.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn old car is good enough for company use\u2026 (but I\u2019ll buy a nice one for myself).\u201d
\n\u201cWhen we make a profit, we should give back to employees and customers\u2026 (and make sure I get something back, too).\u201d<\/p>\n

So that was what they meant.<\/p>\n

Well, of course. Somehow, that realization made me feel reassured. These days, I understand how owning a luxury car\u2014or the car you\u2019ve always dreamed of\u2014can motivate you to work harder.<\/strong> But I sometimes wish I\u2019d known more about cars when I was a new graduate.
