It\u2019s not that I was ever keeping it a secret. But my work today grew out of that Porsche blog, so it naturally comes up in conversation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ez-toc-container\" class=\"ez-toc-v2_0_74 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-grey ez-toc-container-direction\">\n<div class=\"ez-toc-title-container\">\n<p class=\"ez-toc-title\" style=\"cursor:inherit\">\u30b3\u30f3\u30c6\u30f3\u30c4<\/p>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-title-toggle\"><\/span><\/div>\n<nav><ul class='ez-toc-list ez-toc-list-level-1 ' ><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/freedom_porsche\/#My_Husbands_Free_Spirit_and_My_Perspective\" >My Husband\u2019s Free Spirit and My Perspective<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/freedom_porsche\/#Why_Shared_Values_Matter_in_Porsche_Ownership\" >Why Shared Values Matter in Porsche Ownership<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_Husbands_Free_Spirit_and_My_Perspective\"><\/span>My Husband\u2019s Free Spirit and My Perspective<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When I mention the blog, people are often curious about my husband. The conversation tends to go something like this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does your husband drive?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cUm\u2026 a 911, a Boxster, a Cayman\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWait\u2014how many Porsches does he own?\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cI think\u2026 four at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow! What does he do for a living?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOh, he runs an IT company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImpressive! He must be loaded!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNot really\u2014he wears Uniqlo and keeps wearing things until they\u2019re threadbare. He puts pretty much everything into cars. He\u2019s a car nut and a total free spirit. He\u2019ll say, <strong>\u2018I\u2019m heading out for a drive!\u2019<\/strong> and suddenly be gone for two nights and three days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re really okay with that, Mina? I leave all the childcare to my wife during the week, so I have to put family first on weekends or I\u2019d be in serious trouble. I\u2019m jealous of your husband\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My husband is surrounded by other Porsche-loving free spirits, so my own sense of what\u2019s normal may have become a little skewed. I catch myself thinking, <strong>\u201cMaybe this is just how things are.\u201d<\/strong> But I suppose our family life is a little different from the norm.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I don\u2019t feel that I\u2019m <strong>\u201cputting up with it\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cforcing myself to be okay with it\u201d<\/strong> at all.<\/p>\n<p>Getting married doesn\u2019t mean you have to spend every weekend together. We\u2019re both independent adults, and my ideal is for <strong>each of us to pursue what we enjoy, while staying firmly connected at the heart of our family<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That, I think, is the foundation of our relationship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-35034\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/GevkKyAbsAcU_ZU.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 718 Cayman T\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Shared_Values_Matter_in_Porsche_Ownership\"><\/span>Why Shared Values Matter in Porsche Ownership<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Of course, we don\u2019t live completely separate lives.<\/p>\n<p>My husband eats dinner at home every night, and if work makes it impossible for me to pick up our son, he\u2019ll go to kindergarten and get him instead. We mostly talk about cars, but we still have plenty to say to each other every day.<\/p>\n<p>We also have a couple of family traditions: visiting Kumano Nachi Taisha for our New Year\u2019s shrine visit (though we usually go quite late in the season) and attending the 911DAYS track event at Fuji Speedway. Those are occasions we always spend together as a family.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve never sat down and laid out a set of rules. Somehow, though, we\u2019ve found a comfortable way to give each other space while staying close.<\/p>\n<p>So why does this kind of relationship work for us? I think a big part of the answer is that <strong>we got married because our values aligned<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Both of us had once thought, <strong>\u201cMaybe I\u2019ll never get married.\u201d<\/strong> We wanted to live life doing what mattered to us with all our heart. If marriage meant giving that up, we didn\u2019t see any reason to force it.<\/p>\n<p>Writing this all out, I\u2019m realizing I probably don\u2019t have a very conventional perspective for a woman. I grew up in a perfectly ordinary family, so how did I end up thinking this way? (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p>Come to think of it, when my husband introduced me to his younger sister, he apparently said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cShe\u2019s really unusual. It\u2019s like everyone else is going to yoga with their friends, but she\u2019s the one who says, <strong>\u2018I want to learn hula-hooping!\u2019<\/strong> and goes off to take hula-hooping lessons by herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why hula-hooping, of all things? (Laughs.) But I guess the point is that I\u2019m unusual\u2014even though I think I\u2019m perfectly normal.<\/p>\n<p>So how did two people like us end up getting married? It came down to conversations like these:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI really love my work, and I want to keep working hard for the rest of my life!\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThat\u2019s great. If you\u2019re running a company, you\u2019d better earn enough to cruise around in a bright red Porsche! Go for it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI absolutely don\u2019t want to get married and be put on an allowance.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cOf course not. You earn your own money, so you should be able to spend it yourself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we talked, we realized how much our values had in common. We both felt that if we could stay true to ourselves, we could probably have a good time building a life together.<\/p>\n<p>From the very beginning of our marriage, my husband also told me:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cI\u2019m not going to do any housework. But in return, I want to spend money on things that make it easier\u2014like time-saving appliances and hiring someone to help around the house. I want to reduce the burden as much as possible. I\u2019ll earn more than I do now and make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I imagine it\u2019s not every day you hear a man lay out a plan like that. (Laughs.)<\/p>\n<p>As with any two people, we noticed little differences in our values when we first got married, and sometimes we had to talk them through. But over time, our outlooks have gradually come together, and these days we agree on most things.<\/p>\n<p>These days, we\u2019re on the same page about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How we want to raise our child<\/li>\n<li>How we spend our days off<\/li>\n<li>Our attitudes toward money<\/li>\n<li>Our drive to keep aiming higher<\/li>\n<li>Our general preference not to move in a pack<\/li>\n<li>And even what kinds of cars we like (laughs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our priorities and the things we value in life have come to align in all these areas. And when I think about how <strong>enjoying cars motivates my husband and helps him achieve tangible results<\/strong>, I find myself thinking that maybe he should just keep buying and changing cars.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, <strong>the more freedom my husband has, the more confidently I can take on challenges in my own life<\/strong>. I hope we can keep enjoying life and growing together in this way.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Having similar values may be one of the keys to building a comfortable relationship as a couple and as a family.
