First-Class Men Don\u2019t\u2026<\/h3>\n

Some time ago, I read Why First-Class Men Don\u2019t Buy Kei Cars, by Risei Satonaka<\/a>. The book seems to have drawn mixed reactions\u2014many of them aimed at the author rather than the content itself\u2014but I found some points thought-provoking and others hard to agree with. Here\u2019s what the book description on Amazon says:<\/p>\n

Taking the easy route and choosing cheap things can put you at risk.<\/em>
\nDon\u2019t let the crowd dictate how you think.<\/em><\/p>\n

Is there any value in a kei car, which is relatively easy to buy?<\/em>
\nThere\u2019s no value in something anyone can own.<\/em>
\nIt may offer value for the money, but that value comes from the herd mentality that says, \u201cEveryone has one, so it must be safe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

First-class people don\u2019t think that way.<\/em>
\nThey also have a sense of propriety and common sense when it comes to society.<\/em>
\nThey don\u2019t buy something that puts lives at greater risk simply because it\u2019s cheap.<\/em><\/p>\n

If you want to become first-class,<\/em>
\nyou need to leave \u201cignorance\u201d behind.<\/em>
\nEspecially when it comes to things that are popular,<\/em>
\nyou should be highly skeptical.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can understand the argument that \u201cyou shouldn\u2019t let the crowd dictate how you think. You should be especially skeptical of whatever is currently in vogue.\u201d<\/strong> I\u2019m not one to queue for hours, either. Rather than jumping on every trend, I believe we should think for ourselves and make considered choices.<\/p>\n

For example, to me, an hour of my time is worth more than the food I might get after waiting in line for an hour.<\/strong> Especially since having children, I\u2019ve come to feel\u2014without exaggeration\u2014that \u201ctime is life.\u201d So instead of buying something just because it\u2019s popular, what matters more is whether a product or service is genuinely valuable to me and whether it\u2019s worth the cost. (Maybe that\u2019s just because I\u2019ve always been pretty practical.)<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, some parts of the book and its description didn\u2019t sit right with me.<\/p>\n

What Didn\u2019t Sit Right With Me<\/h3>\n

There are three main points I disagree with. First:<\/p>\n

\u2460 \u201cThere\u2019s No Value in Something Anyone Can Buy\u201d<\/h4>\n

It\u2019s true that niche products may be more expensive and considered more valuable. And experiences available to only a select few may attract more interest than ones anyone can have.<\/p>\n

But on the other hand, some things have become widespread precisely because anyone can afford them and they\u2019re convenient.<\/strong> Smartphones are a good example (though the total cost can be high, the monthly payments may be affordable).<\/span> Almost everyone has one, and that single device lets us make calls, use the internet, work, send email, and connect with people around the world.<\/p>\n

Something can be all the more valuable because it\u2019s accessible to everyone and widely used.<\/strong> Plenty of things have spread because they\u2019re useful. You can\u2019t simply say they have no value.<\/p>\n

\u2461 \u201cBuy an Expensive Car, Even If It\u2019s Just to Show Off\u201d<\/h4>\n

Hmm\u2026 I can see the upside of buying a luxury car\u2014even if it\u2019s partly to impress others\u2014and then working hard to become the kind of person who can live up to it. But if the car you truly want is a kei car,<\/strong> then that\u2019s the right car to buy.<\/strong> The Honda S660 is genuinely cool, and a man who can confidently say, \u201cThis kei car is an amazing car!\u201d regardless of what others think is pretty cool, too.<\/p>\n

Rather than saying, \u201cBuy an expensive car to show off,\u201d I\u2019d be much more persuaded by a message like this:<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve always dreamed of owning a luxury car, don\u2019t give up on that dream. Dream big, work hard, and make it happen! Even if people around you say, \u201cYou can\u2019t afford a car that expensive,\u201d don\u2019t let them stop you\u2014go out and achieve your goal.<\/p>\n

Telling people to buy an expensive car just to keep up appearances doesn\u2019t sit well with me. It makes me think the author probably isn\u2019t that interested in cars\u2014or doesn\u2019t know much about them.<\/p>\n

\u2462 \u201cYou Need a Luxury Car to Pick Up Women\u201d<\/h4>\n

\u2026Seriously, what era is this? Sure, plenty of women might be impressed when they see a man driving a luxury car. And while brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW have expanded their lineups to include more accessible models\u2014even new cars in the \u00a52 million range\u2014the luxury-car image still lingers.<\/p>\n

But please don\u2019t underestimate women.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re not so foolish that we\u2019ll just go along with a man because he drives a luxury car. (Though I\u2019m sure there are exceptions.)<\/span> More households now have two working partners, and more women are earning their own incomes. Many women are financially<\/strong> independent and buy what they want for themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They know you can\u2019t judge a man\u2019s worth by his possessions alone.<\/p>\n

Owning expensive things may suggest that someone is successful at work and has a strong earning capacity. But that success is more likely to come from qualities like being a decent person,<\/strong> earning people\u2019s respect, valuing friends and colleagues,<\/strong> working to grow as a person,<\/strong> being adaptable,<\/strong> and staying open-minded and eager to learn.<\/strong> Those qualities may be why opportunities keep coming his way\u2014and why he\u2019s able to earn a good living.<\/p>\n

A luxury car is simply one possible result of that success. What matters more is the person\u2019s character and values.<\/p>\n

When a man gives off the vibe of, \u201cLook at me\u2014I drive a luxury car. Aren\u2019t I impressive?\u201d I might say, \u201cWow, that\u2019s amazing!\u201d\u2014but inside, I could well be viewing him with a cool, skeptical eye.<\/p>\n

A Catchy Title, But\u2026<\/h3>\n

\u201cWhy First-Class Men Don\u2019t Buy Kei Cars<\/strong>\u201d is an interesting, catchy title. I wish the book had been written by someone who genuinely loved cars, knew a wide range of them, and could judge them objectively\u2014and then explain how driving a car you\u2019ve always admired can open up your world.<\/p>\n

Then again, perhaps that wouldn\u2019t have suited the publisher\u2019s agenda. Maybe authors can\u2019t always write exactly what they want when the goal is to publish a bestseller. Whatever the case, I think it\u2019s important to consider what\u2019s out there while still holding firmly to your own standards for making decisions.<\/p>\n
