This time, I’d like to revisit the subject and share what I’ve been thinking about lately.

Getting Started: The Road to Porsche Ownership

For many car enthusiasts, owning a Porsche is a dream.

But the road to getting one isn’t always easy. Even relatively accessible new models like the Boxster, Cayman, and Macan can often top ¥10 million once you add options. So how can you turn that dream into reality?

A photo from the delivery day of my unforgettable first Porsche, a 981 Boxster GTS.

After many years of being captivated by Porsche and experiencing ownership firsthand, I believe there are three essential things it takes to buy a Porsche. There are certainly plenty of other factors, but these are the three I consider especially important.

These aren’t simply financial tips; they’re more about mindset and how you approach life. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

1. Don’t Resent Other People’s Success

The first key to buying a Porsche is not resenting other people’s success. At first, that might seem to have nothing to do with buying a car. But this mindset is vital if you want to move forward and succeed.

It’s only human to envy others from time to time. But your life can take a very different course depending on whether you can genuinely feel happy for successful people and Porsche owners—or respond to their success with resentment.

When you see someone who’s more successful than you, living in a beautiful home or driving an expensive car, can you think, “I’d like to get there too,” instead of feeling envious? People who can respond that way are future success stories. It’s a quality I’ve seen in Porsche owners, too.

Resentment pushes you away from the very people and opportunities that could help you succeed. As the saying goes, “birds of a feather flock together.” When successful people enter your orbit, that may be a sign you’re on a similar path. Letting envy make you miss that opportunity would be a real shame.

So when you witness someone else’s success, try to feel happy for them and let it inspire you to reach for the same. That’s the first step toward success.

2. Focus on Growing Your Income, Not Just Saving

The second key to buying a Porsche is to focus on increasing your income rather than simply cutting costs. When people want something expensive, many start by looking for ways to save. That may seem like the quickest route, but I believe it can actually take longer.

Focusing too much on saving can be a sign that you’ve given up on the idea of earning more. If you believe you can grow your income, you’ll look for ways to do that instead of relying solely on cutting expenses. Of course, saving matters—but it comes second. First, put your energy into increasing what you earn.

Many salaried workers have resigned themselves to the idea that “no matter how hard I work, my pay won’t go up.” It’s true that sticking with the same approach in the same role may not lead to a significant increase. But that’s exactly why you need to rethink how you work.

Rather than simply putting in more overtime, focus on delivering exceptional results. Then make sure your manager and company leadership understand the value of those results. Instead of selling your time by the hour, approach your work as though you’re giving the company results worth paying for.

If your contributions still aren’t recognized, consider changing jobs, starting a side business, or even launching your own company. There are plenty of employers out there. Finding a place that values you fairly can be an important step toward earning more.

In short, buying a Porsche isn’t just about spending less. It’s about actively exploring ways to increase your income—and taking action.

3. Want a Porsche With All Your Heart

The third key may sound simple, but it’s incredibly important: you have to want a Porsche with all your heart.

A lot of people say they want a Porsche. But there’s a world of difference between those who actually become Porsche owners and those who don’t. It takes more than thinking, “It would be nice to have one”—you need a desire that truly comes from within.

Before I could afford a Porsche, I rented one in Germany during our honeymoon. Even after we got home, I kept looking at this photo.

People who truly want a Porsche don’t give up when they run into obstacles. They’re willing to do whatever it takes to work through family objections, parking challenges, or financial constraints. Every now and then, I hear people give up over things like “My wife is against it” or “It won’t fit in my parking space.” To me, if you give up over something like that, you may not want it as much as you think.

This kind of desire goes beyond simply wishing hard for something. It’s a feeling that rises naturally from within—a powerful urge that compels you to take action.

If you don’t feel that kind of desire, maybe you don’t truly want a Porsche. And that’s okay; there’s no need to force it. Figuring out what you really want is an important part of life, too.

Conclusion: The Road to Becoming a Porsche Owner

The three keys to Porsche ownership are “don’t resent others’ success,” “focus on growing your income,” and “want it with all your heart.” These aren’t just strategies for buying a car; they’re principles that can help you succeed in life.

Put them into practice, and you may find that you gain more than a Porsche—you could build a more fulfilling life, too. I’ve seen these qualities in many of the Porsche owners around me, and I believe they’re part of what has helped them succeed.

One final point: these mindsets don’t develop overnight. What matters is keeping them in mind and putting them into practice, little by little, in your everyday life. Do that, and one day you may find yourself behind the wheel of your very own Porsche.

I’ve shared thoughts on what it takes to make Porsche ownership a reality several times in this blog and on livestreams.
