Its full corporate name is Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG.<br \/>\nIn other words, Porsche is an engineering company. And what Porsche builds isn\u2019t just cars\u2014it builds sports cars that stir the soul. Having spent more than 60 years creating sports cars, where did Porsche come from, and where is it headed?<br \/>\nTo find out, essayist Yataro Matsuura set off on a journey.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">\uff0a<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 80%;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bsfuji.tv\/porsche_michishirube\/pub\/index.html\">Excerpt from \u201cEvolution and Challenge: A Roadmap for Sports Cars\u201d | BS Fuji<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 80%;\"><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was a really good program.<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised to learn that <strong>\u201cthe very first car Ferdinand Porsche built, 120 years ago, was an electric vehicle\u2014and its design was almost identical to that of today\u2019s plug-in hybrids.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apparently, Porsche designs its cars with an eye to building vehicles that will still feel relevant 20 or 30 years from now. Of course, the company is aware of its competitors, but it doesn\u2019t simply follow their lead. Instead, it builds cars guided by its own conviction about <strong>\u201cwhat a Porsche should be.\u201d<\/strong> That\u2019s pretty inspiring.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">A Panamera for the Journey<\/h3>\n<p>The car essayist Matsuura used to get around in was a <strong>new white Panamera 4 E-Hybrid<\/strong>. It looked incredibly cool, so as a Panamera fan, I\u2019d say <strong>the car alone made the program worth watching<\/strong>. At the end, the show featured the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.auto-museum.at\/\">Porsche Automuseum Helmut Pfeifhofer<\/a>, located in the small Austrian town of Gm\u00fcnd, nestled in the mountains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3685 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171002103851-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 80%;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.auto-museum.at\/\">\uff0aImage courtesy of the Porsche Automuseum Helmut Pfeifhofer website<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not widely known, but from 1944 to 1950, Porsche reportedly set up a factory in <strong>Gm\u00fcnd, Austria, where it produced cars after relocating its operations there during World War II<\/strong>. The museum\u2019s director, who is over 80, remembers Porsche\u2019s days producing cars in Gm\u00fcnd and is a passionate Porsche fan.<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\"> (Building a museum takes more than your average fan. And I bet he\u2019s pretty well-off, too.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The director said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cWhen I bought and drove a used Porsche for the first time as a teenager, I was overcome with a feeling I couldn\u2019t put into words. It was as if I\u2019d become one with the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even the Porsches of around 70 years ago delivered that feeling of driver and car becoming one, and the joy of driving. That hasn\u2019t changed\u2014in fact, it continues to evolve. It\u2019s truly remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>The Porsche fans featured in the program were the real deal: some owned cars of which only a few dozen exist worldwide, while others had models from the air-cooled era. It made me feel a little embarrassed, as if it were presumptuous for someone like me to call myself a Porsche fan.<\/p>\n<p>I need to learn a lot more about Porsche.
