A Life That Fits Your Circumstances<\/h3>\n

The other day, a former senior colleague posted that their company president had sent them this birthday message: \u201cPeople need to grow in keeping with their age and position.\u201d<\/strong> There\u2019s certainly some truth to that. I also once heard someone say:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf my daughter told me she wanted to be an idol, I\u2019d be completely against it. I\u2019d tell her to be more realistic and live a life that fits her circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

That kind of thinking is common.<\/p>\n

We often hear people say, \u201cLive within your means\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cKnow your place.\u201d<\/strong> And sure, if someone earning \u00a5200,000 a month buys luxury handbags costing hundreds of thousands of yen and takes on debt to live in a high-rise apartment, most people would say they should live within their means.<\/p>\n

But personally, while \u201cliving within your means\u201d and \u201cknowing your place\u201d may sound sensible, they can also sound like excuses for not taking on a challenge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You Have to Try It to Find Out<\/h3>\n

That\u2019s because truly understanding your own limits takes plenty of experience\u2014including failure. (Though if those experiences prove valuable later, I\u2019m not sure they count as failures.)<\/span> Sometimes you have to try something beyond your reach, or do something reckless. You have to hit a wall, get hurt, bleed, feel the pain, and make a fool of yourself before you can finally understand your limits and what you\u2019re capable of.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You realize things like, \u201cI thought I could do more, but I still wasn\u2019t good enough,\u201d or \u201cThe world is a big place,\u201d or \u201cWhat really matters in life.\u201d \u2026At least, that\u2019s how it\u2019s been for me.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, choosing to live within your means after trying all kinds of things<\/strong> carries a completely different weight\u2014and I think it\u2019s admirable. The words and actions of people who have come full circle, like monks who have spent years in training or business leaders who have overcome adversity, have real depth. They\u2019re truly remarkable.<\/p>\n

Buying a Porsche with My Own Money<\/h3>\n

Thanks to my husband, I get to drive a Panamera Turbo. And when I say, \u201cI\u2019m going to buy a Porsche with my own money!\u201d my parents sometimes tell me:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re always going on about that. Living within your means matters, too. Most people wouldn\u2019t think that way about a 35-year-old mother of two.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe they\u2019re right. But the limits of what I can do aren\u2019t for society to decide\u2014they\u2019re for me to decide.<\/strong> So I want to keep challenging myself: to experience buying a Porsche with my own money, achieve the goals I set for myself, and try all kinds of new things.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a saying I love:<\/p>\n

You never know until you try. In the end, all that remains is what you\u2019ve done.<\/span><\/p>\n
