Is There Any Truth to This?<\/h3>\n

I came across an article claiming that \u201cthe children of Porsche fanatics hate Porsches.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nLet\u2019s be honest: Porsches aren\u2019t exactly comfortable cars with a plush ride. The cabin is cramped, and the car bucks and jolts over rough roads. The engine is loud, and in older Porsches, the air conditioning doesn\u2019t work.

\nKids who are made to come along have a rough time of it. If they get the front passenger seat, they\u2019re lucky. In a Porsche fanatic\u2019s family, where the Porsche is the only car, the kids inevitably have to sit in the back whenever the family goes out. That\u2019s when it becomes hell.

Online, people seem divided on this article\u2014though perhaps there are more people agreeing with it than not. (Or maybe the supporters just speak up more.)<\/span><\/p>\n

It might well be true of classic narrow-body or air-cooled Porsches. But the article was written in 2007, a decade ago, so perhaps it doesn\u2019t reflect what Porsche ownership is like today.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s be honest: Porsches aren\u2019t exactly comfortable cars with a plush ride. The cabin is cramped, and the car bucks and jolts over rough roads. The engine is loud,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, at the start of 2018, I took another look at what it\u2019s like to live with a Porsche.<\/p>\n

My Take on Porsche Ownership in 2018<\/h3>\n

\u2460 Porsches Have Become More Comfortable<\/h4>\n

I got to test-drive a 911 last year, and the ride was far from uncomfortable. In fact, I thought it was remarkably comfortable for a sports car. It\u2019s definitely firmer than a luxurious, smooth-riding Panamera, but it didn\u2019t feel as though every bump in the road was being sent straight through the car.<\/p>\n

My husband\u2019s current Boxster GTS is comfortable, too. Even when we\u2019re carving through mountain roads, I\u2019ve never felt carsick.<\/p>\n

If anything, the SLK 350 my husband used to own felt more jarring, with its seats sitting low and seeming to transmit every bump in the road. A GT3 might be a different story, of course, but a standard 911 today is actually pretty comfortable.<\/p>\n

\u2461 Are Porsches Cramped Inside?<\/h4>\n

The Cayenne and Panamera have plenty of room, but the article was probably talking about the 911. And when it comes to the 911, yes\u2014the cabin is compact. After riding in a Panamera, I once climbed into a 911 or Boxster and couldn\u2019t help blurting out, \u201cThe driver\u2019s seat is so close!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re used to modern kei cars or other vehicles with airy, spacious interiors, a 911 will certainly feel tight. And as for the 911\u2019s back seats\u2026 no matter how you look at it, they\u2019re tiny (laughs). I\u2019d say they\u2019re only comfortable for a child of about six or younger\u2014before they start elementary school.<\/p>\n

\u2462 Are Porsche Engines Loud?<\/h4>\n

Air-cooled Porsches do have a constant growl\u2014or perhaps more of an idling rumble\u2014that might bother some people. But modern Porsches have effective sound insulation, so you don\u2019t notice it as much inside the cabin.<\/p>\n

That said, the engine does go \u201cVROOOM!\u201d when you start it, and it can be pretty loud. Still, compared with a Lamborghini or McLaren, I\u2019d say it\u2019s relatively restrained.<\/p>\n

Is It Really About the Father-Child Relationship?<\/h3>\n

After thinking it all through, I\u2019ve come to believe that it\u2019s less about the Porsche itself and more about the relationship between a father and his child<\/strong>. In other words, it may not be that \u201cthe children of Porsche fanatics hate Porsches,\u201d but that \u201ca child who dislikes their father comes to dislike Porsches after being stuck riding in one with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

If a child loves and looks up to their father, then spending time together will be fun\u2014whether it\u2019s a Porsche drive or a bike ride to the supermarket.<\/p>\n

Especially when Dad is busy with work all week and the weekends are the only chance to spend time together, a child is bound to be excited when he says, \u201cLet\u2019s go for a drive in the Porsche!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

But what if the child already dislikes their father?<\/span><\/p>\n

What if he\u2019s always scolding them, acting intimidating and superior, picking on their beloved mom, and focusing so much on work that he barely pays attention to them?<\/p>\n

A drive alone with Dad in a Porsche would feel like \u201ctorture.\u201d They\u2019re stuck together in a cramped cabin while Dad cares more about the car than about them. No wonder they\u2019d end up hating Porsches.<\/p>\n

A Mother\u2019s Influence Matters, Too<\/h3>\n

But this dynamic doesn\u2019t just depend on the father; I think the mother can have a big influence, too. If she\u2019s always saying, \u201cYour dad only cares about his Porsche!<\/strong> He cares more about that car than his family!\u201d<\/strong>, the child may start thinking, \u201cThere\u2019s something wrong with Dad.\u201d And if she says, \u201cDon\u2019t tell your father!<\/strong> He\u2019ll get mad again if he finds out!\u201d<\/strong>, the child might act pleasant around their father while secretly resenting him.<\/p>\n

So whether a child grows up loving or hating Porsches may have a lot to do with the relationship between the child and the father behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

In the end, maybe everything works out when the family gets along. Here\u2019s to a happy, harmonious family in 2018!
