A Thorough Report on Home Charging<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular, many people are curious about the actual running costs\u2014especially the electricity bills.<br \/>\nThis time, I\u2019m reporting on the real electricity costs of home charging for our two EVs: a <strong>Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo and a Tesla Model 3 Highland Long Range<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To get straight to the point, driving these two high-performance EVs as much as we want resulted in an astonishingly low cost of just <strong>\u00a513,178<\/strong>.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s take a closer look at how remarkable this figure really is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33895 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Monosnap-\u904e\u53bb\uff13\u30f6\u6708\u306e\u8a73\u3057\u3044\u691c\u91dd\u7d50\u679c\u3092\u307f\u308b-\u95a2\u897f\u96fb\u529b-Google-Chrome-2-1280x997.png\" alt=\"EV electricity cost\" width=\"1280\" height=\"997\" \/> This is not for one car. It\u2019s the electricity cost for two EVs.<\/caption>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-33909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_2665-1158x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"EV electricity cost details\" width=\"1158\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Home_Charging_Setup_and_Electricity_Contract\"><\/span>Home Charging Setup and Electricity Contract<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>First, let me explain our home charging setup.<br \/>\nWe have installed <strong>two standard household 200V outlets<\/strong> in our parking area. Each outlet has a capacity of 3kW, with one assigned to the Taycan and the other to the Model 3.<br \/>\nWith this setup, we charge both cars almost every day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-33898\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_1119-1176x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"EV charging outlet\" width=\"1176\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our electricity contract is with Kansai Electric Power under the <strong>\u201ce-Smart 10\u201d<\/strong> plan. This plan\u2019s standout feature is its very low nighttime electricity rates. The pricing structure is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Nighttime (10 PM to 8 AM): \u00a515.53\/kWh<br \/>\n&#8211; Daytime (1 PM to 4 PM): \u00a538.53\/kWh<br \/>\n&#8211; Living time (8 AM to 10 PM): \u00a530.11\/kWh (summer rate)  <\/p>\n<p>In our case, <strong>charging is done almost 99% during nighttime<\/strong>, so we pay the lowest rate of \u00a515.53\/kWh.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Surprising_Electricity_Bill_Breakdown_of_%C2%A513178_per_Month\"><\/span>Surprising Electricity Bill: Breakdown of \u00a513,178 per Month<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The period covered in this report is about one month, from August 26 to September 24, 2024. The electricity usage and charges for this period were as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Total usage: 600 kWh<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Breakdown: Nighttime 591 kWh, Living time (summer) 9 kWh<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Billed amount: \u00a513,178<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of you might be surprised by this result.<br \/>\n<strong>Running two EVs cost only \u00a513,178<\/strong>. Let\u2019s consider how inexpensive this is by comparing it to gasoline cars.<\/p>\n<p>Near my home, gasoline prices currently range from \u00a5170 to \u00a5180 per liter. Filling up a high-performance engine car like these costs about \u00a58,000 to \u00a510,000 each time. Owning two cars might mean refueling twice a week or more.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to that, the monthly cost of \u00a513,178 is astonishingly low. And remember, these are <strong>high-performance cars like the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model 3, known for their exceptional driving quality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_1356-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Tesla Model 3 Highland\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GGGuAFGbsAAzl3b-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_True_Value_of_Electric_Cars_Balancing_Performance_and_Economy\"><\/span>The True Value of Electric Cars: Balancing Performance and Economy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>What I want to emphasize here is that I\u2019m not just saying \u201cit\u2019s cheap.\u201d Of course, some might argue that eco-cars or kei cars have better fuel efficiency. But if we start that debate, it would lead to \u201cjust ride a scooter\u201d kind of argument.<\/p>\n<p>What I want to highlight is the value of being able to run <strong>high-performance, fun-to-drive cars like the Taycan and Model 3 at this cost<\/strong>. For example, the Taycan offers power and ride comfort comparable to a Panamera with a V8 engine. When I used to drive a Panamera Turbo, fuel efficiency was about 3\u20134 km\/L in city driving and 8\u20139 km\/L for commuting. That meant refueling almost weekly, costing at least \u00a520,000 to \u00a530,000 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to that, running both the Taycan and Model 3 for \u00a513,178 is an incredible economic advantage. Plus, we achieve the following driving distances with this cost:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Taycan: 600\u2013800 km\/month<br \/>\n&#8211; Model 3: 1,000\u20131,500 km\/month (this time, 1,241 km)  <\/p>\n<p>Covering these distances for just \u00a513,178 is clear proof of <strong>balancing performance and economy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Especially for those who do a lot of short trips in the city, <strong>the benefits of EVs become even more apparent<\/strong>. Since EVs have no idling, their energy efficiency in traffic jams is very high. While stopped, they only consume power for air conditioning or audio, giving them a big advantage over gasoline cars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For people with lifestyles involving frequent short trips like school runs or station commutes, EVs are an ideal choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s important to note that this result depends on having a home charging setup. If you don\u2019t have home charging and rely solely on public charging stations, your costs will likely be higher. Still, EVs tend to be more economical than gasoline cars in most cases.<br \/>\n<strong>When compared to gasoline cars with similar performance, EVs almost always have lower running costs<\/strong>. Even when performance levels differ, EVs are often more economical.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33899 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_2156-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Taycan charging\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/> Set to reach 80% charge by 8:00 AM<\/caption>\n<p>Finally, I want to touch on the general perception of EVs in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, EVs tend to have a negative image here. There are various reasons for this. Sometimes, positive news is hard to come by due to behind-the-scenes factors, and feelings of envy or jealousy from those who can\u2019t afford EVs may also play a role.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, <strong>negative opinions, articles, and videos about EVs tend to attract more attention, making it harder for positive information like this report to spread<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, once you actually own and operate EVs, the clear economic benefits become obvious. I firmly believe that <strong>the true value and appeal of EVs lie in their combination of high performance and low running costs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I hope accurate information and real user experiences about EVs will be shared more widely.
