Apparently, he said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cThis is basically Kazuo Shimizu, isn\u2019t it? lol\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fair enough\u2026 It\u2019s obvious from this blog that I\u2019m a Porsche fan. So, while I\u2019m nowhere near as knowledgeable about cars as my husband, who\u2019s a full-on gearhead, I\u2019m probably more interested in them than the average woman. That got me wondering:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIf I had to choose one Porsche\u2014the 911, Boxster, or Panamera\u2014which would I pick?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2026It just popped into my head. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(What kind of situation would that even be? lol)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">How Much Have I Driven Each Porsche?<\/h3>\n<p>For context, here\u2019s my experience behind the wheel of each model:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u3010911\u3011<\/strong>Driven once; rode in the passenger seat for five days<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\"> (Five days, lol)<br \/>\n<\/span>On a trip to Germany, I spent plenty of time riding shotgun in my husband\u2019s 911 as we covered the Autobahn and the Romantic Road. I\u2019ve also taken one test drive at a dealership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u3010Boxster manual\u3011<\/strong>Driven five times; ridden as a passenger about ten times<br \/>\nMy husband\u2019s Boxster GTS has a manual transmission, and I still can\u2019t manage a hill start. I\u2019ve just about managed to drive it along the Royu Driveway. I\u2019ve never even shifted into fifth gear. (Yikes!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u3010Panamera\u3011<\/strong>Two years of driving<br \/>\nI\u2019ve driven a late-model 970 Panamera Edition and our current 971 Panamera Turbo on all sorts of roads. Between the two, I\u2019ve probably covered around 20,000 kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, judging from that experience alone would make this a very Panamera-biased comparison. And \u201c911\u201d covers a lot of different models\u2014standard coupe, Targa, Cabriolet, Turbo, 4S, and more. The Boxster experience also varies depending on whether it has a manual or PDK transmission, and whether it\u2019s a 718 or 981.<\/p>\n<p>But if I tried to account for every variation, I\u2019d never finish. So I\u2019ll compare the versions I\u2019ve actually driven: the 911 Carrera 4S, the manual Boxster GTS, and the Panamera Turbo.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">How Do They Stack Up?<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2460 Ease of driving<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(The Boxster gets a lower score because it\u2019s a manual, and I\u2019ve never really driven it well. The 911 is easy to drive\u2014the size, handling, and throttle response are all fantastic. The Panamera feels intimidating at first because it\u2019s so big.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2461 Maneuverability<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(The Panamera is over five meters long and nearly two meters wide, so it\u2019s a big car.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2462 Open-road thrill<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(Nothing beats the thrill of an open-top car\u2014the feeling of driving with the wind all around you.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2463 Tailgating, being cut off, or pressured to move over on the highway (5 = never)<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(Actually, I\u2019ve never been tailgated while driving a Porsche.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2464 How often cars move over in the highway passing lane, even when there\u2019s plenty of space ahead<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(I feel like drivers move over for the Boxster much more readily than for the Panamera. Maybe it\u2019s because the Boxster sounds louder.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2465 Engine sound<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(The Boxster GTS has a manual, so I love that \u201cbrrr-brrr-brrr\u201d sound when I downshift.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">The Panamera Turbo sounds fantastic under acceleration, on a cold start, and with its deep bass rumble. But this one really comes down to personal taste.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2466 Passenger-seat comfort<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(After getting used to the Panamera\u2019s space and smooth ride, the 911 and Boxster feel a little more vibration-prone\u2014and I notice just how close I am to the driver!)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2467 Mountain roads<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(I once read an article about someone getting really carsick on mountain roads in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. That\u2019s never been an issue in a Porsche.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2468 How much my daughters like them<\/h4>\n<p>911:We don\u2019t own one<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(They seem to love the Boxster because the roof comes down and it\u2019s so much fun. The Panamera is spacious and comfortable.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2469 Rear-seat comfort<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:No rear seats<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(The 911\u2019s rear seats are incredibly cramped. I doubt they\u2019d work for kids once they reach the upper grades of elementary school.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u246b Rural highways<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(I feel like the 911 and Panamera have a similar ride. The Boxster, on the other hand, seems happiest on winding roads and mountain routes.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u246c Highway driving<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(The Panamera is unbeatable on the highway. It\u2019s like riding in the Green Car on the Shinkansen Nozomi\u2014the bullet train\u2019s premium-class seating. Though, to be honest, I haven\u2019t ridden in one that often.)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u246d Around town<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(Driving the manual Boxster was a challenge every time I stopped at a traffic light. That\u2019s entirely down to my driving skills, of course\u2026 The Panamera simply gets terrible fuel economy. Around town, it shows 4.0, but since the display doesn\u2019t show anything lower, the actual figure might be closer to 3.)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u246e Parking<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">(The Boxster sits a little low, so I\u2019m nervous about parking lots with wheel-locking barriers. The Panamera won\u2019t fit in spaces under 1,900 mm wide, which rules out most city parking garages. Finding a spot is a real challenge.)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 80%;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u246f Overall<\/h4>\n<p>911:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nBoxster:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<br \/>\nPanamera:\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, it comes down to what you want from a car\u2014and your family situation makes a big difference, too. Would you choose the <strong>911: easy to drive, comfortable on the highway, and fun on mountain roads, but with rear seats that are almost nonexistent<\/strong>? The <strong>Boxster: a fun, open-top roadster that\u2019s a blast on mountain roads and winding routes, but seats only two<\/strong>? Or the <strong>Panamera: thirsty, tricky to park, and not especially maneuverable, but spacious enough for four, comfortable on the highway, fun on mountain roads, and capable of delivering all kinds of driving enjoyment<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how I\u2019d sum it up. For me, being able to enjoy a drive with the whole family matters most, so I\u2019d choose the Panamera.
