The Mission E<\/h3>\n

The Mission E, Porsche\u2019s first all-electric production car, had me thinking: \u201cThe Panamera is great, but the Mission E looks so good. It\u2019s so futuristic and stylish that when it goes on sale, I might start having second thoughts about my Panamera.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the other day, I came across this article.<\/p>\n

\u201cPorsche\u2019s first EV, the Mission E, reveals a glimpse of its potential in the bitter cold of Scandinavia!\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

I was intrigued and clicked through right away\u2014but the photos stopped me in my tracks.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>\u2026What is this? That\u2019s not the Mission E! ( \uff9f\u0434\uff9f )!!<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the Mission E:

\u2026So how did we end up with this? \u2193<\/span>

\n\"\"<\/p>\n

So I turned to my husband and said, \u201cThat\u2019s nothing like the Mission E! What\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just how concept cars are.\u201d (-_-)<\/p>\n

he replied, matter-of-factly.<\/p>\n

What Is a Concept Car?<\/h3>\n

A concept car is a vehicle built by an automaker for display, often at international motor shows. Sometimes called a \u201cdream car\u201d or \u201cfuture car,\u201d it shows the direction a manufacturer hopes to take: \u201cThis is the kind of thinking that will shape the cars we build in the future.\u201d<\/strong> Concept cars also give automakers a chance to gauge public reaction and get drivers excited about new ideas.<\/p>\n

As I searched online, I found plenty of comments and articles calling concept cars \u201ca scam\u201d or saying they were \u201cdisappointing.\u201d Then my husband chimed in:<\/p>\n

\u201cA concept car isn\u2019t the same thing as a production car. It can look incredibly cool, but there may be practical issues: the headlights might be positioned somewhere regulations don\u2019t allow, the ride height might be too low, or those long, stylish wheels and tires might make the ride really uncomfortable. So putting a car into production is a different story. That said, when the Audi TT Coupe went on sale in 1998, the production version stayed remarkably close to the concept car\u2014and it was a huge hit.<\/strong> I actually bought one myself back in the day, haha.\u201d<\/p>\n

They really do look alike. So it can happen! I\u2019d always assumed that concept cars went into production just as they were, but apparently that\u2019s not usually the case. Still, it would be easier to tell if automakers unveiled concept cars with designs that screamed, \u201cThere\u2019s no way this is ever going into production!\u201d<\/p>\n

How the World of Concept Cars Is Changing<\/h3>\n

My husband went on to explain:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the past, concept cars were generally built as real vehicles and shown at motor shows. These days, automakers are also unveiling concept-car-like designs through Gran Turismo on PlayStation.\u201d<\/p>\n

I checked out the website\u2014and sure enough!<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you design a Gran Turismo as you imagine it?\u201d It all began with that question from Kazunori Yamauchi. In the automotive world, Gran Turismo\u2014or GT, the name that inspired the video game series\u2014is a term for a two-door sports car built for grand touring.
\nAutomakers around the world have embraced that idea, and new \u201cGran Turismos\u201d are arriving one after another. Vision Gran Turismo began as a 15th-anniversary celebration created by automakers, Gran Turismo, and its users. The cars unveiled through the project are gradually added to the Gran Turismo series, where players can get behind the wheel and help the celebration grow.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sure enough, automakers like Audi, Honda, McLaren, Subaru, and Lexus have all unveiled their own concept-car-like designs. And the idea that you can actually drive them in a game is fascinating.
