The BBC\u2019s motoring show Top Gear<\/em> first aired in 1977.<\/p>\n

In Japan, episodes\u2014including reruns\u2014occasionally air on BS Fuji. A new version of Top Gear<\/em> launched in 2016, but the trio who hosted the show through 2015\u2014Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May<\/strong>\u2014were especially entertaining. Apparently, the show\u2019s popularity really took off after Jeremy Clarkson joined in 1988.<\/p>\n

What makes Top Gear so entertaining?<\/h3>\n

The show\u2019s appeal probably comes down to the three hosts\u2019 wonderfully outrageous antics. Watching grown men act like kids and do whatever they please is hilarious\u2014and it makes you wonder how the BBC ever got away with it. Here are a few of the highlights\u2026<\/p>\n

1) The challenges are completely over the top<\/h4>\n

\u201cBuy a truck for \u00a35,000, customize it, then take on a series of ridiculous challenges\u2014including drifting and hill starts\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n

\n(And the truck\u2019s on fire, lol.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRace the length of Vietnam, aiming to reach the finish\u2014even if that means traveling on a raft along the way\u201d<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cTo tackle the problem of declining rail use in Britain, build a train using a Jaguar XJS or an Audi S8\u201d<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n

\n(The car-based train eventually met a spectacular end.)<\/span><\/p>\n

These are the kinds of challenges that would probably never make it onto Japanese TV. The show must have had a pretty hefty budget, too.<\/p>\n

2) Unfiltered opinions on cars\u2014and everything around them<\/h4>\n

\u201cBlunt\u201d doesn\u2019t even begin to cover it. If the hosts don\u2019t like a car, they absolutely tear it apart. In the Prius episode, after giving it a savage roasting, they riddled it with machine-gun fire until it looked like Swiss cheese. ((((\uff1b\uff9f\u0414\uff9f))))<\/p>\n

And then there are classic one-liners like:<\/p>\n

A classic car, like a dog, will eventually let you down and die.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Or:<\/p>\n

You get married, have children, buy a minivan, and die.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\uff08\u7b11\uff09They sound outrageous, but there\u2019s often a kernel of truth in them\u2014which is probably why they stick.<\/p>\n

3) The celebrity guests are a big draw<\/h4>\n

One recurring segment has celebrities drive a lap of the test track and compete for the fastest time. Guests have included famous athletes, singers, actors, comedians, and politicians. In one episode, Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise appeared together. (And Tom Cruise was a surprisingly good driver, too.)
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

What did Jeremy Clarkson think of Porsche?<\/h3>\n

So, what did Top Gear<\/em> make of Porsche? Host Jeremy Clarkson wasn\u2019t a fan of the brand (he preferred Mercedes-Benz), so his comments could be brutal. But every now and then, you\u2019d find yourself thinking, \u201cWell, when you put it that way, he might have a point.\u201d<\/strong>\uff08\u7b11\uff09<\/p>\n

\u25a0 On Porsche design<\/strong><\/p>\n

I often wonder whether Porsche even has a designer. I suspect it\u2019s someone who\u2019s never studied art.<\/p>\n

\u25a0 On the Cayenne\u2019s design<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like much of Porsche\u2019s current lineup, it isn\u2019t exactly a looker. It\u2019s about as ugly as a badger carcass that died two weeks ago. (2010)<\/p>\n

\u25a0 On the Panamera<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Panamera looks like a drowned 911, its body bloated and swollen. In the end, this car is about as ugly as a skinned monkey. I drove it all the way to Romania and found it to be an extremely capable car. But that\u2019s like complimenting an ugly person by saying they have a beautiful soul. (2009)<\/p>\n

By comparison, Japanese motoring shows can feel a little too serious. They don\u2019t tend to feature such a wide range of offbeat challenges, and they\u2019re often careful to soften their criticism out of consideration for the people involved.<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re tired of that style of car show, give Top Gear<\/em> a try. Jeremy Clarkson reportedly fell out with the production team in 2015, and all three hosts left the show. They went on to present The Grand Tour, available exclusively on Amazon<\/a>. The newer version of Top Gear<\/em> hasn\u2019t received quite the same acclaim, but its challenges are more sensible (the old ones may have set the bar for outrageous a little too high)<\/span>, and its reviews take a more serious approach. Personally, I think that works just fine.<\/p>\n
