The roads are clogged with cars, traffic crawls on both local roads and expressways, and every leisure spot has long lines. On top of that, accommodation prices go through the roof during peak season.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the point of taking the family out when a holiday weekend comes with the triple whammy of crowds, queues, and sky-high prices?\u201d<\/strong> So we hardly ever travel or go on outings during the holidays. If we do, we usually go a little before or after the busy period.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve been this way since before we got married. Neither my husband nor I likes crowds, so we\u2019ve never been to a fireworks festival or a local festival together. We don\u2019t even know when the fireworks festivals are.<\/strong> We\u2019ve also never gone to a popular restaurant or ramen shop because we hate waiting in line.<\/p>\n Our first lunch date was at Kappa Sushi (My husband asked, \u201cWhere would you like to go for lunch?\u201d and I said, \u201cKappa Sushi\u2014it\u2019s cheap and never busy.\u201d Apparently, he was amazed that a woman like me existed!)<\/span>. After that, we often went to Sukiya or McDonald\u2019s for meals. We\u2019d go out of our way to avoid traffic and do the exact opposite of everyone else\u2014so, yes, we were a couple with not a romantic bone in our bodies.<\/p>\n Our family has a set routine for Golden Week and other long weekends:<\/p>\n My husband: Goes on a three- or four-night motorcycle tour<\/span> This arrangement means:<\/p>\n My husband<\/strong>: He can enjoy a tour at his own pace, doing whatever he likes\u2014just like when he was single, without having to worry about the kids needing the bathroom or getting cranky. So everyone\u2019s happy. For now, this is the best way for our family to spend the holidays. That said, I can see how this might not work for a family where the husband wants to go touring, but the wife wants to go out together<\/strong>\u2014it can be hard when you want different things. It may not be an option for families who are expected to visit both sets of grandparents, either. And as the kids get older, we may find ourselves having to plan outings during the holidays, too.<\/p>\n Our approach works because of where our family is in life right now.<\/p>\n People sometimes ask, \u201cDoesn\u2019t your husband mind you taking the kids to your parents\u2019 place during the holidays?\u201d<\/strong> Others ask, \u201cAre you really okay with your husband leaving you and the kids behind to go touring by himself?\u201d<\/strong> But neither of us sees it that way at all.<\/p>\n There\u2019s no single \u201cright\u201d way to spend a holiday. As long as everyone in the family\u2014and anyone else involved\u2014is happy with the arrangement, any approach is just fine.<\/p>\n So, my husband set off yesterday for a tour through Yamaguchi, Shimane, Tottori, Hiroshima, and Okayama, exploring the region\u2019s agricultural roads on his beloved \u201cSL Grandpa.\u201d The kids and I headed to my parents\u2019 place.<\/p>\n Oh, the joy of being back home! \nMe<\/strong>: I can leave the housework and childcare to my parents and lounge around at home (Sorry for being such a lazy daughter! lol)<\/span>
\nThe kids<\/strong>: They get to play with their grandparents, eat loads of snacks they\u2019re usually not allowed to have at home, and go on lots of outings.
\nThe grandparents<\/strong>: They\u2019re over the moon to have their grandkids come stay.<\/p>\n
