A question that crossed my mind one day<\/h3>\n

\u201cWhy are Porsche fans and Ferrari fans so different?\u201d<\/strong> The thought popped into my head one day. Porsche fans seem pretty hardcore, for lack of a better word. I was surprised when I took a quick look at posts in a Facebook group for Porsche enthusiasts that my husband belongs to. There were plenty of deeply nerdy posts about things like air-cooled engines and someone saying, \u201cI\u2019ve finally finished the break-in period after 200,000 kilometers! ( \u00b4\u30fc\uff40)!\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband says much the same about Porsche driving schools:<\/p>\n

\u201cPorsche fans really are a bunch of car nerds. Even while someone else is driving, there are loads of people muttering to themselves and studying what\u2019s going on: \u2018Ah, so that\u2019s how you do it. Hmm, I see.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Ferrari fans, on the other hand, often seem like they\u2019ve stepped straight out of LEON, a Japanese men\u2019s fashion magazine\u2014stylish and well put together.<\/p>\n

Comparing Porsche and Ferrari<\/h3>\n

So, I decided to compare Porsche and Ferrari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Porsche\u2019s name literally translates to \u201cF. Porsche Honorary Doctor of Engineering Corporation\u201d<\/strong>\u2026 That\u2019s pretty funny! (laughs) And when it comes to profit per car, Ferrari\u2019s figure has climbed even higher\u2014to \u00a512 million today, apparently. (For comparison, BMW is said to make \u00a5560,000 per car, Toyota \u00a5210,000, and Subaru \u00a5360,000.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a512 million in profit from selling just one car?! (\uff1b\uff9f\u0414\uff9f))))\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Porsche\u2019s \u00a51.94 million per vehicle is impressive by automaker standards, too\u2014but Ferrari\u2019s numbers are incredible.<\/p>\n

Thinking about it in terms of watches<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m neither a management consultant nor a motoring journalist, so I can\u2019t claim to know the ins and outs. But I get the impression that Ferrari is exceptionally good at marketing<\/strong>, while Porsche focuses more on developing and improving the technology in the cars themselves (and does that well, too)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is just my personal take, but if I compare them to watches, Ferrari feels a bit like Hublot\u2026 (Though Hublot is Swiss, of course.)<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>Of course, Hublot watches are well made and look great. But the brand is even better at marketing.
\nBy signing up high-profile ambassadors\u2014including Usain Bolt(though apparently he no longer represents the brand)<\/span>, baseball pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, footballers, and Olympic athletes\u2014and releasing limited editions, Hublot built a reputation as \u201cthe watch successful, stylish men wear.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Japanese watchmaker Grand Seiko is the brand I find myself comparing it with.<\/p>\n

Unlike Hublot, Grand Seiko seems to put its energy into craftsmanship rather than marketing. Its designs are stylish, but many still have that classic \u201cwatch\u201d look (though its higher-priced collections have expanded in recent years)<\/span>. You can sense a craftsman\u2019s dedication to pursuing \u201cperfect accuracy\u201d and \u201cthe function of a watch.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In my experience, plenty of Ferrari fans also like Hublot, but I haven\u2019t come across many Porsche fans who are into Hublot.<\/p>\n

My husband\u2019s take<\/h3>\n

The other day, I casually asked my husband, \u201cWhat\u2019s the difference between people who love Ferraris and people who love Porsches?\u201d<\/strong> He thought about it for a while, then said:<\/p>\n

\u201cFerrari fans look outside themselves for validation. Porsche fans look within. That\u2019s the difference, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHmm? What do you mean by that?\u201d<\/strong> I asked. He went on:<\/p>\n

\u201cFerrari fans may have a stronger desire to be admired by others\u2014to make people think, \u2018I look cool driving a Ferrari!\u2019 Porsche fans feel that too, of course, but what matters more to them is the satisfaction of driving a car they genuinely believe is good: one that lets them experience the kind of driving they want.\u201d<\/p>\n

That makes sense. When you think about it, both Porsche and Ferrari probably understand their fan bases very well. I studied business at university, and now I can\u2019t help thinking that it would have been fascinating to research \u201cthe differences between Porsche and Ferrari\u201d<\/strong> for my senior thesis. That\u2019s where my thoughts are these days.
