What People Say When They Read My Blog<\/h3>\n

Lately, I\u2019ve started telling friends and fellow car enthusiasts about this blog when I meet them. Quite a few look it up right then and there (If you search \u201cPanamera\u201d and \u201cblog,\u201d it comes up at the top\u2014which makes you wonder just how niche those keywords are\u2026) <\/span>and they usually say the same thing:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou write a blog every day? How do you ever find enough to write about?\u201d<\/p>\n

I showed the blog to my parents for the first time over Golden Week, and they said pretty much the same thing:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know that much about cars, so what on earth do you have to write about? (-_-)\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2026Well, they have a point.<\/p>\n

First, I Set Out to Write Every Day for Three Months<\/h3>\n

When I\u2019d only just started this blog, it was getting around three to five visits a day. Even so, I made a commitment: write every day for three months<\/strong>. Naturally, I struggled to come up with topics. I mean, I don\u2019t spend every waking moment thinking about Porsches! (LOL)<\/p>\n

On days when I had nothing to write about, I\u2019d post about worries at work or conversations with the kids. For a long time, this was barely a car blog at all. I\u2019d ask my husband, \u201cI can\u2019t think of anything to write about\u2026\u201d and he\u2019d say:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean? There\u2019s loads to write about! You could talk about the Panamera\u2019s seat ventilation, or chat with the service technicians when you take it in for an oil change and come away with ideas. There are endless possibilities! (\u309co\u309c)!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, but I\u2019m not a car nut like you! I can\u2019t go that far!\u30fd(`\u0414\u00b4)\uff89\u201d<\/strong> I\u2019d shoot back\u2014without coming up with a single idea.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, traffic gradually started to grow. But that brought a new challenge: I couldn\u2019t just write whatever came to mind. I started wondering, \u201cWhat are readers looking for when they visit this blog? What do they want to know?\u201d<\/strong> And when a post I\u2019d agonized over and carefully crafted got hardly any traffic, I\u2019d feel utterly discouraged.<\/p>\n

Six Months In, I Couldn\u2019t Write Anymore<\/h3>\n

Then, six months after I launched the blog\u2014in December of last year\u2014I overthought everything, my mind went blank, and I simply couldn\u2019t write anymore. \u201cI\u2019ve finally started getting more traffic. I don\u2019t want to quit now. What should I do?\u201d<\/strong> I wondered, so I took a chance and sent a message to a blogger who writes about Porsches and supercars (Their blog is one of the most widely read in this corner of the internet, I think.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI started a blog, but I\u2019ve run out of ideas and don\u2019t know what to write about. Would you have any advice for me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

That was the gist of it.<\/p>\n

People Are Looking for Opinions, Not Just Information<\/h3>\n

It was my first time emailing this person, and asking, out of the blue, \u201cCould you share all the experience and know-how you\u2019ve built up\u2014for free?\u201d<\/strong> would have been incredibly cheeky (I didn\u2019t actually put it that way, but when you think about it, that\u2019s essentially what I was asking.)<\/span> I assumed I\u2019d never hear back. But to my surprise, a thoughtful reply arrived in less than a day!<\/p>\n

It really struck me that successful people often have a generosity of spirit and treat others with genuine sincerity. I learned a lot just from that. I didn\u2019t ask permission to publish the whole email, so here\u2019s just an excerpt:<\/p>\n

I took a look at your blog, and I was impressed by how thoughtfully you write. I learned a lot from it.

\nI\u2019ve read a few books and websites about running a blog, but none of them really felt right for me. So, for now, I\u2019m still learning through trial and error with my own blog. One thing I\u2019ve come to realize is that people may be looking for \u201copinions\u201d more than \u201cinformation.\u201d<\/strong>

\nPerhaps readers want to feel, \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what I thought, too,\u201d or they feel a connection with someone who puts their own feelings into words. Another thing I\u2019ve noticed is that people can feel a sense of connection with someone who teaches them something they didn\u2019t know.<\/strong> Bloggers who make readers think, \u201cI didn\u2019t know that\u201d or \u201cThat makes sense\u201d<\/strong> tend to become popular.

\nI think a woman\u2019s perspective can be a real strength<\/strong>. Some female automotive journalists are popular precisely because they bring a perspective men don\u2019t, and I think you may notice things that male bloggers miss.<\/p>\n

What Are This Blog\u2019s Three Strengths?<\/h3>\n

That makes so much sense! How many times did I reread that email? <\/p>\n

I opened Google Analytics and Search Console (At first, I had no idea how to use them, but I\u2019m finally starting to get the hang of it.)<\/span> and tried to figure out what readers were looking for on this blog. I realized it has three strengths.<\/p>\n

1) What It\u2019s Really Like to Use a Porsche Every Day<\/h4>\n

\nSo far, I can only write about the Panamera and Boxster, but I realized that sharing what everyday Porsche ownership is really like\u2014things you won\u2019t learn from a media outlet\u2019s test-drive review\u2014may be one of this blog\u2019s strengths.<\/strong> What\u2019s the real-world fuel economy like? After living with a car for a while, which options turn out to be worth having, and which ones don\u2019t? Writing about things you can\u2019t figure out during a test drive that lasts just a few hours is an advantage.<\/p>\n

2) A Woman\u2019s Perspective<\/h4>\n

\nOne quietly popular post on this blog is \u201cFive Things My Husband Did to Win Over His Car-Indifferent Wife and Buy a Porsche.\u201d<\/a> I sometimes hear from men who say, \u201cI want a Porsche, but my wife isn\u2019t exactly enthusiastic about it,\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cI bought a Porsche, but I go out driving alone every weekend, and my wife isn\u2019t happy about it.\u201d<\/strong> For husbands in that situation, my posts may be helpful because they offer a woman\u2019s perspective: what wives really think, and how my own husband went about winning me over.<\/p>\n

3) My Car-Loving Husband\u2019s Views and Opinions<\/h4>\n

\nEven if I can write from a woman\u2019s perspective, a post from a woman who knows nothing about cars wouldn\u2019t be very convincing. Readers might think, \u201cOh, interesting,\u201d<\/strong> but I doubt they\u2019d come away saying, \u201cThat makes sense! She\u2019s absolutely right.\u201d<\/strong> In that respect, my husband is a serious car enthusiast\u2014more knowledgeable than many dealership salespeople, with plenty of hands-on experience (he\u2019s driven all kinds of cars)<\/span> and, for some reason, an uncanny knack for getting the latest news early. Having his views and way of thinking as a foundation for this blog is one of its strengths, I think.<\/p>\n

\u2026That sounds a bit self-important, though. Am I even right? (-_-)<\/p>\n

Now I Have More Ideas Than I Can Keep Up With<\/h3>\n

Ever since I took a step back and figured out what this blog is about, ideas have started coming to me one after another.<\/strong> Once I had a clear focus, I began noticing things in everyday life that fit the blog. I kept thinking, \u201cI want to write about that!\u201d and \u201cI want to write about this, too!\u201d I\u2019ve been jotting down ideas, but the list keeps growing\u2014and now I have more than 20 topics waiting in the wings. I feel like a writer racing to meet a deadline (Though I\u2019m not a professional writer, so I\u2019ve never actually experienced that!)<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are a few things I\u2019m especially keen to write about right now:<\/p>\n

\u2460 Test drives: I\u2019d love to share our impressions after my husband and I test-drive the new Cayenne (I hear test drives are due to start around July.)<\/span>
\n\u2461 Porsche Owner Profiles: I\u2019d like to interview Porsche owners about what they love about their cars and what Porsche means to them, then share their stories alongside photos of their cars taken with my DSLR.
\n\u2462 Driving trips: I want to take a Porsche out on all kinds of roads\u2014and learn to drive the Boxster with a manual transmission.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the plan for now.
