While he was away, my daughters and I visited my parents. Right up until the day before he left, he was debating: <strong>\u201cShould I take the Boxster this time, or the SL?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He usually takes his 981 Boxster GTS with a manual transmission. But since buying an SL500 (R129) a few months ago, he hadn\u2019t taken it on a long-distance trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cI know the Boxster is fun because I\u2019ve taken it on plenty of trips, but I\u2019ve never tried the SL on a proper road trip. I want to see what it\u2019s like. Then again, the Boxster would be better on tight mountain roads\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Honestly, what a luxurious dilemma! Haha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After much deliberation, he decided to take the SL.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">\u00a0This Time, a Tour of the Chugoku Region<\/h3>\n<p>The plan was to <strong>\u201cexplore the rural roads of Yamaguchi, Shimane, Tottori, Hiroshima, and Okayama.\u201d<\/strong> First, he drove from our home in Hyogo Prefecture to Hofu in Yamaguchi Prefecture, then spent three days making his way back. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(He booked at the last minute, so almost everything was full\u2014and this route was what he came up with.)<\/span> Here\u2019s what it looks like on a map.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1Slcj-i8N-MokPN69zapxwLOEe7WM6Oe-\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He visited the Akiyoshidai Karst Observatory,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1740 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/31913767_10216217691816902_3177880430120534016_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and Shokasonjuku Academy, where Yoshida Shoin taught,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1741 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/31934482_10216218505317239_650050279571456000_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" \/><\/p>\n<p>before driving along the Karst Road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1742 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/31899201_10216219047130784_7212407128403738624_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next day, he headed to Mount Daisen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1744 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/31946512_10216226714802471_2174546181097521152_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So peaceful and beautiful! And whenever he goes on a trip like this, he wears a <strong>Porsche watch<\/strong> sold at Porsche dealerships.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1746 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/31543867_10216226715402486_8124765547666604032_n-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He really does love Porsche, doesn\u2019t he? (\uffe3\u30fc\uffe3)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After that, he drove along a beautiful road in Okayama that reminded him of the N\u00fcrburgring,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1748 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/31948477_10216233296687014_4459369177982959616_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" \/><\/p>\n<p>then looped through the Sayo area of Hyogo Prefecture on his way home. As for the trip\u2019s distance and fuel economy:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u25a0 Distance: About 1,200 km round trip, from home and back<br \/>\n\u25a0 Fuel economy: About 10 km\/L on highways, and 8\u20139 km\/L on rural roads<\/p>\n<p>On trips like this, my husband usually stays at inexpensive hotels for around \u00a55,000 a night, including breakfast, and often just grabs food from a convenience store. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Somewhere like this.)<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1757 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/31909105_10216227534702968_5820713295002206208_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even when I tell him, \u201cIf you\u2019re going all that way, why not stay at a hot-spring inn and enjoy a delicious meal?\u201d he says:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cI don\u2019t need any of that. As long as there\u2019s covered parking and the facilities are decent, anywhere will do. The car comes first, always! Food and a room for me are secondary! No car, no life!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every time I hear him say something like that, I\u2019m reminded that <strong>\u201cthis man really is crazy\u2026\u201d<\/strong> (Haha.)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">How a Road Trip in the SL Differs from One in the Boxster<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">1) The SL Is Less Tiring Than the Boxster<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1753 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_5197-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Boxster is great fun, but its seats put you in the mood to \u201cget out there and drive!\u201d\u2014or, as he puts it, they keep your shoulders slightly hunched forward. Driving it is a blast, but <strong>covering more than 1,000 km in a day is bound to leave you feeling tired.<\/strong> By contrast, the SL\u2019s seats are more like a roomy sofa, so he didn\u2019t feel tired at all.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">2) The SL Lets You Relax Instead of Going into Attack Mode<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1754 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/31945429_10216226714642467_1069494255963078656_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a manual transmission and GTS badge, the Boxster puts him in the mood to <strong>\u201crev the engine and drive hard!\u201d<\/strong> The SL doesn\u2019t make him want to push on at full throttle, but it\u2019s still thoroughly enjoyable at a good pace. He says the SL is especially well suited to cruising along country roads.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">3) The Boxster Is Better on Tight, Winding Mountain Roads<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1755 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/18222439_10212864762795772_1806469937230016833_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On tight mountain roads with sharp turns, the SL can feel like hard work. He said that was when he found himself wishing he were in the Boxster.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">So, Which One Is Better?<\/h3>\n<p>Both are convertibles, so driving with the wind in your hair feels wonderful\u2014and it sounds like he had a fantastic road trip. The SL has its own strengths, as does the Boxster, and they offer such different experiences that it\u2019s hard to say, <strong>\u201cThis is the one to take on a road trip!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His ideal setup, though, would be:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Take the SL to the destination, switch to the Boxster for driving around once there, then take the SL home again.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what he says, anyway. (Haha.)
