A Car Ride Can Make It Easier to Talk About the Things You Usually Don\u2019t<\/h3>\n

When you\u2019re in a car, it somehow feels easier to talk about things you don\u2019t usually bring up. On long family drives, the kids usually fall asleep on the way home, and that\u2019s when my husband and I end up talking about all kinds of things.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s been happening lately, how we\u2019ve been feeling, what matters to us right now, work\u2026 Somehow, talking side by side in a car feels much easier than going out for a meal together (though with kids, we hardly ever get that chance these days)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I wondered if sitting side by side instead of face to face\u2014and being in a cozy, enclosed space\u2014might be what makes conversation flow more easily. So I searched online and came across plenty of articles like these.<\/p>\n

Huh\u2026 So women are reading articles like these to get ready for a drive date.<\/p>\n

I Used to Sleep Through Every Ride<\/h3>\n

My husband and I went on plenty of drives even before we got married, but I spent most of them fast asleep. Then, when we reached our destination, I\u2019d say things like, \u201cWhat, we\u2019re already there? Wow, I slept so well!\uff65\u2235.\u201d<\/strong>\u2014with absolutely no regard for how that might sound\u2014and promptly fall asleep again on the way home.<\/p>\n

And it wasn\u2019t just in the car. Once, my husband took me on a motorcycle ride, and the breeze felt so good that, well, I completely conked out\u2014not just nodding off, but properly asleep.<\/p>\n

I kept banging my helmet against his from behind as he rode. He was exasperated: \u201cHow on earth can you sleep that much on a motorcycle? (-_-)\u201d<\/strong> We never went on another motorcycle ride together after that\u2026<\/p>\n

Now that I\u2019ve become a car enthusiast, I feel like I hardly ever fall asleep in the passenger seat anymore. (Not that it never happens.)<\/span><\/p>\n

What Do Those Articles Actually Say?<\/h3>\n

I wondered what these online articles had to say, so I took a look.<\/p>\n

\n\u30fbSnacks or drinks your boyfriend likes

\n1.\u3000Opening their drink for them
\n2.\u3000Complimenting their driving skills
\n3.\u3000Helping out with the drive
\n4.\u3000Checking that they\u2019re feeling okay
\n5.\u3000Looking like they\u2019re having a good time
\n\u25a07 things to avoid doing in the passenger seat<\/strong>
\n1.\u3000Criticizing the way he drives
\n2.\u3000Wearing too much perfume
\n3.\u3000Staring at your phone or making calls the whole time
\n4.\u3000Falling asleep<\/strong>
\n5.\u3000Sitting with bad posture
\n6.\u3000Suddenly shouting or making other loud noises
\n7.\u3000Suddenly announcing that you need to use the restroom while he\u2019s driving

So, yeah\u2014apparently falling asleep is a no-no\u2026<\/p>\n

Really, Though?<\/h3>\n

Looking more closely at the other articles, I found quite a few complaints that made me think, \u201cWait, people actually care about that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u30fb\u201cWhen I hand her a drink, she doesn\u2019t open the cap for me.\u201d (37-year-old man, sales, information technology)
\n\u2192If you want her to open it, why not just ask?<\/span>
\n\u30fb\u201cShe talks to me while I\u2019m concentrating on driving.\u201d (38-year-old man, other, healthcare and welfare)
\n\u2192Then why not go for a drive by yourself?<\/span>
\n\u30fb\u201cShe doesn\u2019t check behind us when I\u2019m reversing.\u201d (22-year-old man, other, other)
\n\u2192Come on, you should be checking that yourself.<\/span>
\n\u30fb\u201cHe\u2019s lost, but she doesn\u2019t do anything to help.\u201d (38-year-old man, sales and service, transportation and warehousing)
\n\u2192Why not just say, \u201cCould you look it up on Google Maps?\u201d<\/span>
\n\u30fb\u201cI\u2019ve gone out of my way to take her along a scenic route, but she just stares at her phone.\u201d (35-year-old man, administrative specialist, education)
\n\u2192Okay, that one\u2019s fair.<\/span>
\n\u30fb\u201cShe didn\u2019t help me pay at the toll booth.\u201d (37-year-old man, technical specialist, metals, steel and chemicals)
\n\u2192Seriously? You\u2019re 37\u2014get it together.<\/span>

\u2026When I find myself thinking, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t want to go on a date with a guy that high-maintenance,\u201d<\/strong> I can\u2019t help wondering if I\u2019m just not on the same wavelength as most men. (-_-)<\/p>\n

Dating a Man Who Loves Cars<\/h3>\n

But when I think about it, there\u2019s a big difference between \u201cgoing on a drive date with a man who loves cars\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cgoing on a date with a man who happens to use a car to get around.\u201d<\/strong> My husband loves cars, so maybe he actually enjoyed driving more when I was asleep beside him\u2026 (Or maybe that\u2019s just me making excuses.)<\/span><\/p>\n

As for what to keep in mind when you\u2019re dating a car-loving man, here\u2019s my take:<\/p>\n

1. As a rule, don\u2019t eat or drink in the car<\/strong>
\nIf he asks, \u201cWant something to drink?\u201d then sure, have one together\u2014but don\u2019t bring your own food or drinks along.
\n2. Close the door gently
\n<\/strong>My husband once dropped a not-so-subtle hint after I slammed the door.
\n3. Wipe dirt off your shoes before getting in<\/strong>
\nIf your shoes get dirty while you\u2019re out, brush off as much dirt as you can before getting back in.
\n4. Compliment his car<\/strong>
\nNo one minds hearing a kind word about the car they love.
\n5. Show interest when the conversation turns to cars<\/strong>
\nIf he starts talking about something like, \u201cThe engine in this car\u2026,\u201d even if you don\u2019t really understand, ask questions: \u201cOh, really? So what does this part do?\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s about it.
