<\/span><\/h3>\nIn my previous article, I wrote about how impressed I was after test-driving the 996 GT3, and before that excitement faded, I got the chance to drive the late-model 991 GT3.<\/strong> <\/p>\nSpeaking of the late 991 GT3 (MT), I once owned one myself. From the perspective of comparing it with the 996 GT3, I\u2019d like to talk about the appeal of the 991 GT3. <\/p>\n
First impressions when starting to drive: the 991 GT3\u2019s engine start-up sound is noticeably louder than the 996 GT3\u2019s. While the 996 GT3\u2019s start-up isn\u2019t exactly quiet, it doesn\u2019t have the boldness of the 991 GT3. Also, the clutch on the 996 GT3 is heavier, while the 991 GT3\u2019s clutch is lighter. <\/p>\n

<\/span>An MT Like a PDK<\/span><\/h3>\nA major feature of the 991 GT3\u2019s manual transmission (MT) is that you can keep your foot on the accelerator while disengaging the clutch and shifting to the next gear.<\/strong> Thanks to electronic control that skillfully manages the engine, you can shift up as smoothly as with a PDK. <\/p>\nThis is a huge advantage on the track, allowing you to shift up while flooring the accelerator and disengaging the clutch. Even on public roads, you can enjoy rhythmic and satisfying gear changes. <\/p>\n

This sensation is very enjoyable, and like a PDK, it produces a satisfying \u201cBashun! Bashun!\u201d sound when shifting up. When downshifting, SPORT mode activates auto-blip to match revs, making it both easy and fun. <\/p>\n
The 991 GT3\u2019s MT offers the feel of operating a PDK while retaining the tactile feedback unique to a manual. That\u2019s its charm. <\/p>\n
<\/span>Differences in Handling<\/span><\/h3>\nNext, let\u2019s look at the handling differences between the 996 GT3 and 991 GT3. <\/p>\n
In short, the 991 GT3 is unbelievably stable and will turn in any situation just by steering.<\/strong> On the other hand, the 996 GT3 requires you to control weight transfer with the accelerator and brakes; simply turning the wheel won\u2019t make it turn well. <\/p>\nTo use a skiing analogy, the 996 GT3 is like old straight skis where you control the turn by managing your weight, while the 991 GT3 is like modern carving skis that turn sharply just by tilting the edges a bit. <\/p>\n

How you perceive this difference depends on your preference, so it\u2019s hard to say which is better. If you value the fun of making the car turn with your own skill, the 996 GT3 is probably for you. If you want stable, precise steering in any situation, the 991 GT3 is the better choice. <\/p>\n
That said, this characteristic of the 991 applies mainly to driving on winding public roads. At circuit speeds, weight transfer remains essential to fully exploit the GT3\u2019s capabilities. <\/p>\n
<\/span>Differences in Engine Feel<\/span><\/h3>\nFinally, let\u2019s touch on the engine. The 991 GT3 is clearly louder.<\/strong> Its tone is lower and fuller, whereas the 996 GT3\u2019s sound is somewhat higher-pitched and sharper, typical of the smaller 3.6-liter displacement. <\/p>\n![\"Porsche](\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0824-1280x960.jpeg\")

Output is obviously higher in the 991 GT3, especially impressive in the high rev range. <\/p>\n
However, personally, I feel the 996 GT3 has more torque in the low to mid-range, making it stronger in everyday driving. This might be because the 991 GT3 sacrifices some low to mid-range torque to squeeze out 500 ps. <\/p>\n
<\/span>Summary<\/span><\/h3>\nThough both are GT3s, the 996 and 991 models are quite different. The 991 GT3 shines with ease of use and stability on public roads, while the 996 GT3 is truly a driver\u2019s car that demands skill to unlock its performance. <\/p>\n

Neither is objectively better; the right GT3 depends on your preferences and skill level. This reminded me once again how challenging it is to choose a Porsche. But whichever you pick, it\u2019s undeniably a legendary 911 GT3. <\/p>\n
Having driven both the 996 and 991, I feel fortunate to have experienced the evolution of the GT3 firsthand.
