It consists of three parts: the bolt itself, a cover with a keyhole, and a cap. Despite its size, it\u2019s also quite light, weighing only about 49 grams.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32464\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_9857-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Genuine Porsche theft-prevention bolt (lock-up wheel nut)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Since the 964 has 5-lug wheels, it uses four regular nuts and one theft-prevention nut, totaling five nuts. However, having just one theft-prevention bolt can look a bit odd.<br \/>\nSo, I considered not using the theft-prevention bolt and instead buying four regular bolts to replace them. But even though the bolts are lightweight and located inside the tire, I wondered if the 31-gram difference might affect the wheel balance. That\u2019s why I decided to investigate this matter.  <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32465\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32465\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_9861-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Wheel with theft-prevention bolt installed\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The theft-prevention bolt is large and protrudes, making it somewhat noticeable.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Porsche_Specifies_Where_to_Use_the_Heavier_Theft-Prevention_Bolts\"><\/span>Porsche Specifies Where to Use the Heavier Theft-Prevention Bolts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Reading the 964 owner\u2019s manual reveals the following instruction:  <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When mounting the wheels, ensure that the wheel bolt identified by paint is positioned farthest from the valve. Always install the lock-up wheel nut on the wheel bolt identified by paint.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What does \u201cwheel bolt identified by paint\u201d mean?<\/strong> When I checked my 964, I found a bolt painted in a fluorescent color. The manual instructs that the air valve should be positioned farthest from this painted bolt, and the theft-prevention bolt must be installed on this painted bolt.  <\/p>\n<p>In other words, it looks like the diagram below:  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IMG_9876-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Correct wheel positioning for air-cooled Porsche\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32474\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32474\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/IMG_9859-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 wheel bolt\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Only one bolt is painted<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Porsche strictly specifies this to minimize the impact of bolt weight differences on wheel balance.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_Youre_Concerned_About_Wheel_Balance_on_Your_Air-Cooled_Porsche_Check_This\"><\/span>If You\u2019re Concerned About Wheel Balance on Your Air-Cooled Porsche, Check This<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Our 964 was originally installed correctly, and the wheel balance was carefully adjusted, so there\u2019s no particular issue. However, <strong>if you\u2019re worried about wheel balance, it\u2019s a good idea to check whether the bolts are installed exactly as specified.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>If your tires are mounted and dismounted at a Porsche dealer or specialist shop, there\u2019s likely no problem.
