Starting to Learn About the 911<\/h3>\n

After visiting Fuji Speedway the other day, I started taking a little more interest in the 911. I like to think I know a reasonable amount about the Panamera, but when it comes to the 911, I know next to nothing. (Though, honestly, most people probably know it the other way around!)<\/span><\/p>\n

So I was looking through the 911 lineup on Porsche Japan\u2019s official website<\/a>…and there were so many models that I couldn\u2019t make heads or tails of it (-_-)<\/p>\n

The lineup is broadly divided into these categories:<\/p>\n

\u30fb911 Carrera Models
\n\u30fb911 Carrera T
\n\u30fb911 Targa 4 Models
\n\u30fb911 Turbo Models
\n\u30fb911 Turbo S Exclusive Series
\n\u30fb911 GTS Models
\n\u30fb911 GT3 Models
\n\u30fb911 GT2 RS<\/p>\n

But then I noticed that the Carrera models include Cabriolets, the Turbo models include Cabriolets, and the Targa 4 GTS appears under \u201cGTS Models\u201d rather than \u201cTarga Models\u201d…<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m totally lost!! ( \uff9f\u0434\uff9f )!!<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m amazed by owners who can look at all these choices and say, \u201cThat\u2019s the one\u2014I\u2019m buying it!\u201d I don\u2019t even know the difference between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. In fact, I\u2019d reached the point where I wasn\u2019t even sure what I didn\u2019t understand anymore, and my head was about to start smoking, so I asked my husband.<\/p>\n

How the 911 Lineup Is Organized<\/h3>\n

When I said, \u201cThere are so many 911 models\u2014I can\u2019t figure them out. Can you explain them to me? (-_-)\u201d<\/strong> my husband replied:<\/p>\n

That\u2019s true. The 911 lineup is huge, and it gets pretty complicated because the categories change depending on what you\u2019re looking at.<\/p>\n

Then he got up and disappeared somewhere. A moment later, he came back with a blank sheet of paper and started writing. Peeking over, I saw that he was making a chart. Ah, so he was putting together a 911 lineup guide.<\/p>\n

\u201cI only asked a quick question…\u201d<\/strong> I thought, as I waited for 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cDone! Here you go!\u201d he said, showing me this diagram.<\/p>\n

The handwriting is terrible (lol). Later, I made my own version in Keynote, shown below. (For the record, I left out the Carrera T.)

I must have been wearing a face that said, \u201cHmm…I still don\u2019t really get it just by looking at this. (-_-)\u201d<\/strong> because he explained:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not necessarily the only right way to look at it, but I\u2019ve split the vertical axis into two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. For the horizontal axis, I\u2019ve thought about whether you want something for everyday use or something sportier, perhaps for track driving.<\/p>\n

I looked at the chart again with that in mind.<\/p>\n

Ah, I see…(-_-)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2026<\/p>\n

…So? (\uff9f\u2200\uff9f;)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Some people choose based on design, others based on price, so this isn\u2019t the only way to divide them. It\u2019s just one way of looking at the lineup.<\/p>\n

I looked at the chart again.<\/p>\n

…So? (\uff9f\u2200\uff9f;)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Personally, I want to drive long distances and enjoy mountain roads, so I don\u2019t think a GT3 would be the right fit. But when it comes to what would be perfect for me, I\u2019m still not sure.<\/p>\n

That made sense. The more I looked at the lineup, the more I felt I was beginning to understand it.<\/p>\n

Which 911 Would Suit Me?<\/h3>\n

\u201cBy the way, if I were to buy a 911 (not that I can afford one yet)<\/span>, which one do you think would suit me?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Well, four-wheel drive gives you more stability, so a Turbo could be a good choice. But a Porsche is plenty stable even with two-wheel drive<\/strong>. Our previous Panamera Edition was rear-wheel drive, and it felt very stable at highway speeds. You never felt nervous driving it, did you?
\nSo after that, it really comes down to design and personal preference<\/strong>. The four-wheel-drive models have a slightly wider rear body, but some two-wheel-drive models have a wide rear body, too… The rear lights on the 4 models run all the way across and look great, but who knows if the new generation will have that feature on every model? At that point, honestly, I don\u2019t know which one I\u2019d choose either.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what he said.<\/p>\n

I know people who say things like, \u201cI want to buy a 911, but I don\u2019t know which one to get,\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cAfter considering everything, maybe the standard 911 is all I need.\u201d<\/strong> I think I understand why.<\/p>\n

This is just wishful thinking, but I\u2019d love to see a feature on Porsche\u2019s official website that works like a personality quiz and tells you, \u201cHere\u2019s the 911 that\u2019s right for you!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2713 Do you want a convertible?
\n\u2713 Do you drive on the highway often?
\n\u2713 Do you want to take it to the track?<\/p>\n

It could ask around 20 questions, then give you the answer: \u201cThere you go! This is the perfect 911 for you!\u201d<\/strong> That would make things so much easier.<\/p>\n

Of course, that\u2019ll never happen (lol).<\/p>\n
