The Name \u201cTaycan\u201d is Decided!<\/h3>\n

A while ago, it was reported that Porsche\u2019s first electric vehicle, previously known as \u201cMission E,\u201d has officially been named \u201cTaycan\u201d<\/strong>. For a time, there was some debate over whether it should be pronounced \u201cTeikan\u201d or \u201cTaikan,\u201d but it seems \u201cTaycan\u201d is the final choice. <\/p>\n

Porsche\u2019s first EV is the Taycan! The official name for Mission E is decided<\/a><\/p>\n

Production is set to start next year, boasting over 600 horsepower and accelerating from 0 to 100 km\/h in under 3.5 seconds. The driving range is said to reach 500 km. (Though I guess some home charging setup work will be necessary.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Meaning: \u201cA spirited young horse\u201d<\/h3>\n

\u201cTaycan\u201d is based on the image of the prancing horse at the center of Porsche\u2019s emblem, meaning \u201ca spirited young horse.\u201d<\/strong> Porsche\u2019s marketing team reportedly spent two years researching compatibility with the existing lineup, linguistic meanings in various countries, and trademark checks. <\/p>\n

Amazing\u2026 it takes two years to decide the name of a single car ( \uff9f\u0434\uff9f )<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of linguistic checks worldwide, it reminded me that the Japanese region name \u201cKinki\u201d sounds almost identical to the English word \u201cKinky,\u201d which means \u201c(sexually) perverted.\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n

So, I once saw news that Kinki University is considering changing its English name because it could be interpreted as \u201cAbnormal Sexual Desire University.\u201d <\/p>\n

If Porsche\u2019s car names ended up with such unintended meanings, that would be a big problem\u2026 I\u2019m sure the marketing team put their full effort into thoroughly investigating every detail. <\/p>\n

Organizing Porsche\u2019s Car Names<\/h3>\n

Still, Porsche\u2019s car names seem a bit inconsistent, so I made a table of Porsche car names. (I do love making tables, haha)<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, it kind of makes sense, but why is Cayenne named after a chili pepper\u2026? ( \uff9f\u0434\uff9f )<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the \u201cHorse\u201d?<\/h3>\n

This time, the Taycan name is based on the prancing horse at the center of Porsche\u2019s emblem,<\/strong> but why? Here\u2019s my guess. <\/p>\n

Even as an electric vehicle, Porsche remains a sports car manufacturer. In other words, they returned to their roots and developed this car with a strong awareness of what Porsche truly is, hence naming it after the prancing horse on the Porsche emblem.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what I think. (Just my guess, so I might be wrong\u2014actually, I probably am)<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, since Ferdinand Porsche\u2019s first car was an electric vehicle, and this year marks the 70th anniversary, I think they wanted to embrace the \u201corigin\u201d in every sense. <\/p>\n

The surprising connection between Ferrari and Porsche<\/h3>\n

By the way, the prancing horse on Ferrari\u2019s emblem and the prancing horse on Porsche\u2019s emblem are both modeled after the same prancing horse found on the coat of arms of Stuttgart, Germany, where Porsche\u2019s headquarters are located.<\/p>\n

It makes sense that Porsche uses the prancing horse from Stuttgart\u2019s coat of arms, but why does the Italian carmaker Ferrari use the same horse from Stuttgart\u2019s emblem? <\/p>\n

An unexpected historical episode<\/h3>\n

Researching online, the story goes back to World War I. <\/p>\n

Ferrari\u2019s symbol, the \u201cprancing horse,\u201d is said to originate from the mark on the fighter plane of Italy\u2019s national hero pilot, Francesco Baracca.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

During the war, pilots would attach the marks of enemy planes they had shot down to their own aircraft as proof. The legendary Italian ace pilot Francesco Baracca did the same, attaching the emblem of Stuttgart\u2019s fighter planes he had downed. <\/p>\n

He died in 1918, but later his parents, impressed by Enzo Ferrari\u2019s racing, gave him the prancing horse emblem that had been their son\u2019s symbol. <\/p>\n
