30,000km Since Boxster Delivery<\/h3>\n

My husband bought his 981 Boxster GTS back in November 2015. The mileage is almost 30,000km now. (He used to drive quite a bit during the first year or two, but since last winter, not so much.)<\/span> During this time,<\/p>\n

\u30fbParticipated in a driving event at Suzuka Circuit
\n\u30fbDrove twice at Fuji Speedway
\n\u30fbTook about 7 or 8 long-distance tours of roughly 1500km each
\n\u30fbDrove aggressively on the Royu Driveway on days off
\n\u30fbAttended Porsche Driving School three times<\/p>\n

I think it\u2019s safe to say he\u2019s not just using it for everyday driving but really pushing the car quite a bit.<\/p>\n

Yet, since delivery, he\u2019s only replaced the rear tires once.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s even more surprising is that the reason for that tire change was a puncture caused by a nail.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is There a Difference in Driving Style?<\/h3>\n

At the two-year inspection for the Boxster, my husband asked his dealer contact, Mr. H, \u201cThe tread is wearing down quite a bit; should I replace the tires soon?\u201d<\/strong> He was told, \u201cThere\u2019s still more than 3mm left, so you\u2019re fine,\u201d<\/strong> and in the end, he didn\u2019t replace them.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what the front tires look like.<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s the rear tires that were replaced last year.<\/p>\n

Generally, many Boxster owners replace their tires every 15,000 to 20,000km<\/strong>, but in my husband\u2019s case, the front tires are still fine after 30,000km and might even last longer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t just about the Boxster. When he had his Volkswagen Golf\u2019s one-year inspection, he was told, \u201cMost people\u2019s tire tread wears down more after a year, but yours hasn\u2019t worn much at all.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

With all this, my husband sometimes muttered, \u201cMaybe my driving style is a bit different from usual,\u201d<\/strong> so I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s interesting! Let me dig a little deeper!\u201d and asked him about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 Key Tips for Driving<\/h3>\n

Since the Boxster is mid-engine (MR), the rear tires tend to wear more, but regarding the front tires, \u201cIf you avoid sudden starts, rapid acceleration, and sharp steering, they don\u2019t wear down much,\u201d<\/strong> he says. So, here are the three points my husband consciously follows when driving:<\/p>\n

\u2460 Accelerate Gently When Starting<\/h4>\n

Tires wear most \u201cat the moment they start moving from a standstill,\u201d<\/strong> so he avoids sudden launches from 0 km\/h. He accelerates gently at start, with the image of \u201cletting the tires roll and gain some speed before stepping on the gas more.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2461 Handle Corners Smoothly<\/h4>\n

When taking corners, he tries \u201cnot to turn the wheel sharply after entering the corner but to prepare before the corner and aim to keep the line as straight as possible.\u201d<\/strong> This isn\u2019t just about preserving tires; it\u2019s because \u201cdriving straight reduces G-forces, making it safer and smoother.\u201d<\/strong> This technique was drilled into him during warm-up sessions at Porsche Driving School.<\/p>\n

\u2462 Avoid Sudden Braking<\/h4>\n

Sudden braking is hard on tires, so he brakes gradually and avoids stomping on the pedal abruptly.<\/p>\n

My Husband\u2019s Boxster Tires Are Goodyear<\/h3>\n

By the way, the Boxster comes with either Pirelli or Goodyear tires, depending on the factory production timing, but my husband\u2019s Boxster GTS is fitted with Goodyear tires.<\/strong> He says,<\/p>\n

\u201cGoodyear is pretty good. Well, Michelin is the best, but there aren\u2019t any Porsche-approved Michelin tires in the Boxster GTS size.\u201d<\/p>\n

I see\u2014there\u2019s a lot to consider. Since Porsche tires cost about 50,000 yen each, driving smoothly to extend tire life is really important.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For reference, the new Panamera Turbo is powerful and heavy, and after about 10,000km, the tread has already worn down quite a bit. It probably won\u2019t last 20,000km, so tire wear varies greatly depending on the car model.<\/p>\n
