Notably, while the S model\u2019s engine switched to direct injection in the late 987, this base model retains port injection, making it the last Porsche with a port-injected engine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_8929-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Cayman (987)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_8927-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Wheels of Porsche Cayman (987)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This particular car is a \u201cpure\u201d model with almost no options except for 18-inch optional wheels. So it\u2019s perfect for confirming the Cayman\u2019s true character.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_the_PDK\"><\/span>About the PDK<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Like other Porsches of this era, the startup isn\u2019t flashy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From this late model onward, the automatic transmission replaced the Tiptronic with the PDK.<\/strong> There have been many rumors about the PDK being jerky at low speeds or having subpar downshifts, but at least for this car, it was perfectly fine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32187\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_8937-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"PDK of Porsche Cayman (987)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The start-off is very smooth\u2014at first, I thought it was still a Tiptronic because it uses the clutch so well to get the car moving. I\u2019ve experienced nearly all generations of PDK, and the newer they get, the more direct the feel at launch becomes. For example, comparing the 991.1 and 991.2, the 991.2 has a shorter slip time at launch, and the 992 adds smoothness on top of that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 987\u2019s PDK feels very refined and moist, yet it never feels like a regular automatic slipping.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You hardly feel any shift shock; if anything, it felt like an evolved version of the Tiptronic.<\/p>\n<p>According to the owner, there\u2019s no particularly negative impression of the PDK. Occasionally, there\u2019s a slight jerkiness when shifting between first and second gear in town, but it\u2019s not bothersome.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_8936-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Meter panel of Porsche Cayman (987)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_8933-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of Porsche Cayman (987)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Regarding shifting speed, it\u2019s faster than I expected.<\/strong> It\u2019s about the same shift speed as the early 971 Panamera, so you hardly feel any stress. Modern supercars\u2019 DCTs are often worse in comparison.<\/p>\n<p>Downshifts don\u2019t use blipping like Porsches from 981 onward; instead, the revs seem matched with the clutch. This feels a bit dated but doesn\u2019t cause any discomfort\u2014it downshifts very smoothly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The owner sometimes lightly blips the throttle manually for downshifts,<\/strong> which is one way to enjoy this era\u2019s PDK.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cayman_Handling\"><\/span>Cayman Handling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This car has a standard suspension, not PASM, but the ride quality is very good. Some 718s without PASM can feel a bit bouncy depending on the wheel setup, but the 987\u2019s suspension doesn\u2019t have that issue.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>compared to 981 and later, the suspension noise is louder, reminiscent of the air-cooled 911 era.<\/strong> You can hear clunks from the rear when going over bumps. But like air-cooled Porsches, the impact is barely felt despite the noise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_8951-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Cayman (987)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the NVH treatment shows its age, it adds a charming analog feel. As someone who drives a 964 air-cooled Porsche, I found this Cayman retains a nostalgic, classic Porsche character.<\/p>\n<p>Entering corners, the Cayman leans moderately but grips the road firmly. It\u2019s not as light and nimble as a 718, especially the Cayman T. Rather, it feels pleasantly substantial and inspires confidence through turns.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32196\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32196\" class=\"size-large wp-image-32196\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_9346-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Cayman (987) and Cayman T (718)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cayman (987) and 718 Cayman T<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also, the strong analog feel means the car\u2019s behavior changes moment by moment depending on how you apply load and when you turn the steering. If you steer early and control the throttle properly to take a corner in a straight line, it feels fantastic. Porsche has long been said to be a car you \u201csteer with the throttle,\u201d and this generation still strongly reflects that control style.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, <strong>the moderate 265ps power is just right for enjoying Japan\u2019s winding roads.<\/strong> The power is enough to push confidently, and the pure, unadorned engine and exhaust sounds are very satisfying.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it feels so engaging to drive. I think that\u2019s what makes it so fun and never boring.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Between_Modern_and_Classic\"><\/span>Between Modern and Classic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Riding the 987 Cayman this time, I feel it truly preserves the best qualities of classic Porsches.<\/p>\n<p>For those who think speed is everything and enjoy that, modern 718s are great. But <strong>I want mature drivers who appreciate the \u201cdepth\u201d of this driving experience to get behind the wheel.<\/strong> It\u2019s a perfectly balanced Cayman, and I think touring in it would make you want to keep driving forever.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_8953-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Cayman (987)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-32183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/IMG_8956-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Cayman (987)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is truly a top-notch partner car.<\/p>\n<p>Now, 987s are reasonably priced on the used market, so I highly recommend looking for a well-maintained, fully stock example like this.<br \/>In terms of cost performance, it\u2019s one of the best Porsches for long-term enjoyment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"After discussing on YouTube and my blog how there are few test drive reports on generations like the 987, 997, 986, and 996, I had the opportunity to cover a late-model 987 Cayman this time, so I\u2019d like to share my report.
