The Frankfurt Motor Show<\/h3>\n

For a while now, I\u2019ve had this vague little daydream: What if someone said, \u201cWe\u2019ll cover your airfare and hotel\u2014would you go to the Frankfurt Motor Show and write about it on your blog?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have no idea who might make that offer\u2014or whether anyone would hire an amateur for a job like that. So, yes, it\u2019s pure fantasy. Still, if I\u2019m going to keep writing a blog like this, it would be lovely to become the kind of writer who might one day get asked.<\/p>\n

But what exactly is the Frankfurt Motor Show? (You don\u2019t know?!)<\/span><\/p>\n

My impression was pretty vague: It\u2019s where automakers from around the world unveil new models, in a huge, brightly lit exhibition hall.<\/strong> So I decided to find out more.<\/p>\n

What Is a Motor Show?<\/h3>\n

In Japan, we tend to say \u201cmotor show,\u201d while overseas the term \u201cauto show\u201d is more common. The two mean essentially the same thing. So what is a motor show, exactly?<\/p>\n

Automobiles and related products are displayed at exhibition centers and similar venues. Since these events attract extensive coverage in newspapers, magazines, and on television, as well as large crowds, they are often used to unveil new models and concept cars.

The Tokyo Motor Show, Frankfurt Motor Show, and North American International Auto Show were once considered the world\u2019s three major auto shows, held in Japan, Germany, and the United States\u2014the world\u2019s three largest car-producing nations. Today, with the Geneva International Motor Show and Paris Motor Show added to the list, they\u2019re often referred to as the world\u2019s five major auto shows.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After the Tokyo Motor Show, scaled-down versions are also held in Nagoya, Sendai, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Sapporo. I once went to the Osaka show. Compared with the Tokyo Motor Show I\u2019d seen on the news, it was much smaller than I\u2019d expected, and I remember feeling a little disappointed.<\/p>\n

Why Do Automakers Exhibit at Motor Shows?<\/h3>\n

So, what\u2019s the point of exhibiting at a motor show?<\/p>\n

Because they can expect large crowds, motor shows are not only an opportunity for automakers to unveil new models; they\u2019re also meant to be enjoyable for visitors, whether or not they\u2019re already interested in cars. Simply displaying production cars would soon get boring, so shows often feature design studies and futuristic experimental vehicles that may never go on sale. Their role as an event that sparks visitors\u2019 curiosity is also important. Ultimately, they aim to advance the automobile and encourage its wider adoption.

That makes sense. A motor show is more than just a place to launch new cars\u2014it\u2019s also an event, almost a celebration.<\/p>\n

The Tokyo Motor Show in Practice<\/h3>\n

So just how big is the Tokyo Motor Show? I looked into the 2017 event. It ran for 10 days, from October 28 to November 5, and drew 771,200 visitors.<\/strong> That sounds like a huge turnout, but attendance had actually declined for the second show in a row.<\/p>\n

One major reason for the drop seems to be that American, Italian, and British automakers weren\u2019t exhibiting.<\/strong> In 2017, that included GM, Ford Motor Company, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Abarth, Jaguar, Land Rover, and MINI.<\/p>\n

The automakers exhibiting in 2017 included:<\/p>\n

\nDaihatsu, Lexus, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota.
\n[International automakers]<\/strong>
\nAlpina, Audi, BMW, Citro\u00ebn, DS, Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Peugeot, Porsche, smart, smart BRABUS, Renault, Volkswagen, and Volvo.<\/p>\n

I think a big part of the appeal is seeing cars from all over the world gathered in one place, so the absence of American, Italian, and British brands must have been a real loss. The Tokyo Motor Show is held every other year, so there wasn\u2019t one scheduled for this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About the Frankfurt Motor Show?<\/h3>\n

Even if the Tokyo Motor Show was losing momentum, I wondered whether the Frankfurt Motor Show was still going strong. So I looked up coverage of the 2017 event and found this:<\/p>\n

\nThe Frankfurt exhibition ran from September 14 to 24, 2017. Attendance was about 810,000, down sharply from roughly 930,000 at the previous show in 2015.<\/strong> (Excerpt omitted)<\/span> Among Japanese automakers, Nissan and Mitsubishi did not exhibit.<\/strong> Several European brands also stayed away, including French automaker Peugeot, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), and Swedish automaker Volvo.<\/strong> As a result, there was no need for the temporary pavilion that had previously been set up in the courtyard. \nThere were few new-model launches from Japanese automakers or European brands outside Germany. The contrast was striking: German automakers filled their large stands with new models and concept cars, while other manufacturers had far less to show. The event increasingly felt like a local German motor show.<\/p>\n

The Geneva Motor Show seemed to be drawing a healthy crowd, but it looked as though the Frankfurt Motor Show, too, had lost some of its former momentum.<\/p>\n

Changing with the Times<\/h3>\n

Come to think of it, my husband once said:<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in the day, concept cars were usually built as real vehicles and displayed at motor shows. These days, something like a concept car might be unveiled in Gran Turismo on PlayStation instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he\u2019s right. Automakers including Audi, Honda, McLaren, Subaru, and Lexus<\/strong> have created all kinds of concept-like cars for the Gran Turismo games\u2014and you can actually drive them in the game. The world of new-car and concept-car launches is changing rapidly with the times.<\/p>\n

Automakers have also been producing concept videos for YouTube. Judging by the view counts, plenty of people are watching. Compared with spending a fortune on a motor show stand, using the internet might offer a better return on investment.<\/p>\n

Still, nothing quite matches the thrill of seeing a car in person or soaking up the atmosphere at a show. Ideally, the real-world experience and online world can complement each other.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In that case, getting sent to cover the Frankfurt Motor Show sounds like a pretty far-fetched dream! It\u2019s probably more realistic to pay my own way and write about it on the blog. (Ha!)<\/p>\n

By the way, the Frankfurt Motor Show is held in odd-numbered years, so the next one was scheduled for 2019.
