Frankfurt Motor Show<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve often found myself daydreaming, \u201cI wonder if someone will ever say, \u2018We\u2019ll cover your airfare and hotel if you go report on the Frankfurt Motor Show and write a blog article?\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know who would say that, or if such a request would even be made to an amateur like me\u2026 so it\u2019s purely a fantasy. But even as a fantasy, since I\u2019m running this blog, I hope that someday I might be recognized enough to receive such an offer.<\/p>\n

That said, what exactly is the Frankfurt Motor Show like? (Don\u2019t ask me, right? lol)<\/span><\/p>\n

All I had was a vague image of it being a place where car manufacturers from around the world unveil new models, set in a large, brightly lit space<\/strong>, so I decided to look into it this time.<\/p>\n

What is a Motor Show?<\/h3>\n

By the way, in Japan, it\u2019s called a \u201cMotor Show,\u201d but overseas it\u2019s often called an \u201cAuto Show,\u201d and both mean the same thing<\/strong>. So, what exactly is a motor show?<\/p>\n

A motor show is an exhibition held at trade fair venues showcasing automobiles and related products. Because it receives extensive coverage in newspapers, magazines, and on TV, and attracts many visitors, it is often the venue for unveiling new cars and concept cars.

In the past, the Tokyo Motor Show, Frankfurt Motor Show, and North American International Auto Show\u2014held in Japan, Germany, and the U.S., the world\u2019s top three car-producing countries\u2014were considered the world\u2019s top three motor shows. However, today, the Geneva Motor Show and Paris Motor Show have joined them, making the \u201cBig Five\u201d motor shows worldwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, after the Tokyo Motor Show, smaller motor shows are held in \u201cNagoya, Sendai, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Sapporo\u201d<\/strong>. I once attended the Osaka Motor Show, but compared to the Tokyo Motor Show I had seen on the news, it was much smaller and I remember feeling a bit disappointed.<\/p>\n

What is the Purpose of Exhibiting at a Motor Show?<\/h3>\n

So, what is the purpose of exhibiting or holding a motor show?<\/p>\n

Because a large number of visitors are expected, motor shows serve not only as venues for manufacturers to unveil many new models but also as events that can be enjoyed by both car enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. To avoid boredom from just displaying cars, many futuristic experimental vehicles such as design concept models that will not be commercialized are also exhibited. The show plays a big role in sparking visitors\u2019 interest. Furthermore, the purpose is to promote the development and wider adoption of automobiles.

I see\u2026 so it\u2019s not just a venue for new car announcements but also has the feel of an event or festival.<\/p>\n

The Reality of the Tokyo Motor Show in Japan<\/h3>\n

So, how big is the Tokyo Motor Show held in Japan? I looked into the 2017 event. It was held for 10 days from October 28 to November 5, 2017, with 771,200 visitors.<\/strong> I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s an amazing number!\u201d but apparently, the number of visitors has been declining for two consecutive events.<\/p>\n

The main reason for the decline seems to be the absence of American, Italian, and British car manufacturers.<\/strong> GM, Ford Motor, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Abarth, Jaguar, Land Rover, MINI, and others did not participate in 2017.<\/p>\n

By the way, the exhibitors in 2017 were:<\/p>\n

Domestic Brands:<\/strong>
\nDaihatsu, Lexus, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota,
\nImported Brands:<\/strong>
\nAlpina, Audi, BMW, Citro\u00ebn, DS, Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Peugeot, Porsche, Smart, Smart Brabus, Renault, Volkswagen, Volvo.<\/p>\n

I think the value of attending lies in seeing cars from all over the world gathered in one place, so it must be tough without American, Italian, and British cars. Also, since the Tokyo Motor Show is held every other year, there was no event this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About the Frankfurt Motor Show?<\/h3>\n

Even if the Tokyo Motor Show is struggling, I thought the Frankfurt Motor Show might still be going strong, so I checked out a report on the 2017 event. It said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI was surprised once again by the unprecedented nature of the Frankfurt Motor Show exhibits.\u201d<\/strong>
\nHeld September 14\u201324, 2017, at the Frankfurt exhibition center. The number of visitors was about 810,000, a significant drop from about 930,000 in 2015.<\/strong> (omitted)<\/span> Japanese manufacturers Nissan and Mitsubishi did not exhibit,<\/strong> and among European manufacturers, French Peugeot, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), and Swedish Volvo also withdrew,<\/strong> eliminating the need for a temporary pavilion in the courtyard. \nNot only Japanese manufacturers but also there were few new model announcements from European manufacturers outside Germany,<\/strong> making the gap between German manufacturers\u2014who displayed many new models and concept cars in large booths\u2014and others painfully obvious. It strongly reinforced the impression that this is a local German motor show.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Geneva Motor Show seems to be doing quite well, but the Frankfurt Motor Show appears to have lost much of its former momentum.<\/p>\n

With Changing Times<\/h3>\n

Speaking of which, my husband once said,<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in the day, concept cars were actually built and displayed at motor shows, but recently, concept-like cars are being unveiled in PlayStation\u2019s Gran Turismo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, in Gran Turismo on PlayStation, manufacturers like Audi, Honda, McLaren, Subaru, and Lexus<\/strong> have introduced various concept-like cars that you can actually drive in the game. The environment surrounding new car and concept car announcements is changing drastically with the times.<\/p>\n

Also, recently, car manufacturers create concept movies on YouTube that get quite a lot of views. It might be more cost-effective to use the power of the internet than to spend huge sums exhibiting at motor shows.<\/p>\n

But the thrill of seeing a car with your own eyes and the atmosphere at the venue are still important, so it\u2019s probably best if the real and online worlds complement each other well.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That said, going to report on the Frankfurt Motor Show sounds like a pretty wild dream lol. It\u2019s more realistic to go at my own expense and write a blog post (haha).<\/p>\n

By the way, the Frankfurt Motor Show is held in odd-numbered years, so it\u2019s scheduled for next year.
