Stuck in Heavy Highway Traffic<\/h3>\n

The other day, my husband drove our Panamera to work and got caught in a major highway traffic jam. He decided to try out Traffic Jam Assist.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Porsche Traffic Jam Assist is designed to<\/p>\n

support the driver in traffic jams and other slow-moving traffic at speeds below approximately 65 km\/h (40 mph).<\/strong> The system helps the vehicle stay in the lane it has calculated. When Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is switched on<\/strong>, the system can automatically steer the vehicle within its operating limits.<\/strong> (The driver must keep their hands on the steering wheel and be ready to take control at all times.)<\/span> The system is designed for use on highways and well-maintained rural roads.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the feature in a nutshell. (Summarized from the Panamera\u2019s owner\u2019s manual.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Does It Feel Like Self-Driving?<\/h3>\n

Tap \u201cSurround View\u201d<\/strong> in the upper-left corner of the touchscreen shown below, and Lane Keep Assist on the right will also switch on. But Lane Keep Assist is designed to operate at speeds above approximately 65 km\/h (40 mph). For the heavy traffic we were in, the right feature to select is \u201cTraffic Jam Assist,\u201d<\/strong> which operates at around 65 km\/h (40 mph) or below.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

If the instrument cluster displays the indicator shown below\u2014and it lights up green\u2014then the system is working normally.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For reference, Lane Keep Assist uses a camera mounted by the rear-view mirror to detect lane markings within the system\u2019s limits. If the car approaches a lane marking and risks drifting out of its lane, the system can apply corrective steering.<\/p>\n

The driver can override the system at any time by taking hold of the steering wheel and steering.<\/p>\n

With Traffic Jam Assist switched on, the Panamera can follow the car ahead even when you take your feet completely off the accelerator and brake pedals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

If the car ahead brakes, the Panamera responds by braking, too. And if it comes to a stop only briefly (the manual doesn\u2019t specify exactly how long)<\/span>, the Panamera will accelerate and move off again when the car ahead does.<\/p>\n

Amazing! It really feels like a dream come true\u2014self-driving! (\uff9f\u2200\uff9f)<\/p>\n

We also tried taking our hands off the wheel. After a little while, this warning appeared.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

My husband said, \u201cIt felt like I had my hands off the wheel for about a minute\u2014it seemed like quite a long time.\u201d<\/strong> I checked the owner\u2019s manual, but it doesn\u2019t say exactly how long you can leave the wheel untouched before the warning appears.<\/p>\n

When Traffic Jam Assist is switched on, the driver\u2019s steering input is monitored. If no steering input is detected, a warning message appears in the instrument cluster after a short time.

Once my husband started steering again, Traffic Jam Assist resumed. He said it was \u201csmarter than the cruise control in our Volkswagen Golf.\u201d<\/strong> There was just one drawback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, What\u2019s the One Drawback?<\/h3>\n

My husband\u2019s main complaint was that it \u201ctends to drive quite far to the right.\u201d<\/strong> It sometimes got so close to the lane marking that the tires would run over it with a \u201crrrr\u201d sound. Traffic Jam Assist uses a camera to track the car ahead, so if that car is positioned toward the right side of its lane, the Panamera may follow suit. Still\u2026 here\u2019s what it looked like.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Yep, that is pretty far to the right! (laughs)<\/p>\n

Still, not having to manage every little movement yourself in a traffic jam makes driving much easier. Traffic Jam Assist is an option, and Porsche offers both \u201cAdaptive Cruise Control\u201d and \u201cAdaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist.\u201d<\/strong> If you\u2019re choosing an option, make sure you select the latter to get this feature.<\/p>\n

The Driver Is Always Responsible<\/h3>\n

As convenient as it is, the Panamera owner\u2019s manual makes this clear:<\/p>\n

Traffic Jam Assist can make driving much more comfortable, but do not drive recklessly. The driver is responsible for staying in the lane and correctly assessing traffic conditions at all times.<\/strong> Keep your hands on the steering wheel and be ready to steer at any moment.<\/strong>
\nNever use Traffic Jam Assist in the following situations:
\n\u2012 When driving requires more than the usual level of attention.
\n\u2012 In severe weather, such as snow or heavy rain.
\n\u2012 Off-road or on unpaved roads. Traffic Jam Assist is designed for use on paved roads.
\n\u2012 In urban areas or roadwork zones.
\n\u2012 In narrow lanes.
\n\u2012 In unpredictable traffic situations, such as at junctions or toll booths.<\/p>\n

\nThat\u2019s a good reminder.
