Heavy Traffic Jam on the Highway<\/h3>\n

The other day, my husband drove to work in the Panamera, but since the highway was heavily congested, he decided to try out the Traffic Jam Assist feature.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Porsche\u2019s Traffic Jam Assist is<\/p>\n

a support system for drivers during traffic jams or when driving at low speeds below about 65 km\/h.<\/strong> It helps the vehicle stay within the lane calculated by the system. When ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) is ON<\/strong>, the system automatically controls the steering within its limits.<\/strong> (However, the driver must always keep their hands on the steering wheel, ready to take control at any time.)<\/span> This system is designed for driving on highways and well-maintained suburban roads.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the gist of it. (Summarized from the Panamera\u2019s specification manual)<\/span><\/p>\n

Is It Like Autonomous Driving?<\/h3>\n

If you press the \u201cSurround System\u201d<\/strong> button on the top left of the touch panel shown below, the \u201cLane Keep Assist\u201d on the right also turns ON. However, since Lane Keep Assist only activates at speeds above about 65 km\/h, in heavy traffic jams like this one, you press the \u201cTraffic Jam Assist\u201d<\/strong> button, which operates below about 65 km\/h.<\/p>\n

When the meter displays as shown below, (green display means)<\/span> the system is working properly.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

By the way, the Lane Keep Assist function uses a camera near the rearview mirror to detect the lane course within the system\u2019s range and activates corrective steering if the vehicle approaches or risks leaving the lane.<\/p>\n

The driver can override the system anytime by holding the steering wheel. So, when \u201cTraffic Jam Assist\u201d is ON, the car will follow the vehicle ahead even if your feet are completely off the accelerator and brake pedals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

If the car in front brakes, the Panamera automatically brakes in response. If stopped for a certain period (the manual doesn\u2019t specify the exact seconds)<\/span>, once the vehicle ahead starts moving, the Panamera will accelerate and resume driving.<\/p>\n

Amazing!! It\u2019s like a dream of autonomous driving (\uff9f\u2200\uff9f)!!<\/p>\n

When my husband tried taking his hands off the steering wheel, after a while this warning appeared:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cIt felt like about a minute before the warning showed up\u2014felt pretty long.\u201d<\/strong> I checked the manual, but it doesn\u2019t specify exactly how long you can keep your hands off before the warning appears.<\/p>\n

When Traffic Jam Assist is ON, the driver\u2019s steering input is monitored. If no steering input is detected, a warning message will appear on the instrument cluster after a short time.

Once you start steering again, Traffic Jam Assist turns back ON. My husband said it\u2019s \u201csmarter than the cruise control on a Volkswagen Golf.\u201d<\/strong> However, he mentioned one drawback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n

The Only Drawback\u2026?<\/h3>\n

The drawback my husband noticed is that the system \u201ctends to drive quite far to the right.\u201d<\/strong> Sometimes it even makes a \u201cgroan\u201d sound when it runs over the white line because it\u2019s so far right (laughs). Since it follows the car ahead using a camera, if the car in front drives to the right, the Panamera will also shift right. Here\u2019s what it looks like:<\/p>\n

Definitely quite far right (laughs).<\/p>\n

Still, since you don\u2019t have to operate the steering yourself during traffic jams, it\u2019s definitely easier. This feature is optional, but there are two options: \u201cAdaptive Cruise Control\u201d and \u201cAdaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist.\u201d If you want this feature, choose the latter when selecting options.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Driving Is the Driver\u2019s Responsibility<\/h3>\n

That said, no matter how convenient it is, the Panamera manual states:<\/p>\n

Traffic Jam Assist makes driving much more comfortable, but please avoid reckless driving. It is the driver\u2019s responsibility to stay within lanes and always correctly assess traffic conditions.<\/strong> Always keep your hands on the steering wheel, ready to steer at any moment.<\/strong>
\nAlso, never use Traffic Jam Assist in the following situations:
\n\u2012 When the driver needs to pay more than normal attention.
\n\u2012 Bad weather such as snow or heavy rain.
\n\u2012 Off-road or unpaved roads. Traffic Jam Assist is designed for paved roads.
\n\u2012 Urban areas or road construction zones.
\n\u2012 Narrow lanes.
\n\u2012 Unstable traffic situations such as junctions or toll booths.<\/p>\n

That makes sense.
