My Husband Loves Porsche\u2014but Isn\u2019t Keen on Supercars<\/h3>\n

My husband loves Porsche, but he says he\u2019s never been especially eager to own a supercar.<\/strong> I asked him why.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s been a car enthusiast since he was a kid. Back then, when his friends would rave about the Lamborghini Countach and Miura, he remembers thinking, \u201cSure, they look cool\u2014but not as cool as everyone says.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He did, however, like Ferraris such as the F355, 360 Modena, F430, and F40<\/strong>. He was especially fascinated by the F40. He says he read the chapter in the manga Kochikame\u2014about wealthy police officer Nakagawa buying an F40\u2014over and over again. (Laughs.)<\/p>\n

Still, while Porsche gave him a clear goal\u2014\u201cI\u2019m definitely going to buy one when I\u2019m an adult!\u201d<\/strong>\u2014other supercars never inspired the same strong desire to own one someday.<\/p>\n

Why Supercars Never Became a Buying Goal<\/h3>\n

My husband says there are three main reasons he\u2019s never been all that keen on owning a supercar.<\/p>\n

1) They\u2019re hard to use every day<\/h4>\n

Supercars can be a hassle to live with day to day.<\/strong> They sit so low that even small bumps can scrape the underside, making a quick trip to the convenience store\u2014or a casual dinner out\u2014less straightforward. With upward-opening doors, you also need plenty of space to park, and the loud engine can draw a lot of attention around town. By contrast, he says, a Porsche is fun on track, on a road trip, and in everyday driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2) They\u2019re not ideal for long road trips<\/h4>\n

Whenever he gets an extended break, my husband heads out on a road trip of around 1,500 km (930 miles). He\u2019ll cover long distances on the highway, then take on winding roads once he reaches his destination.<\/strong> In his view, that kind of trip would be tiring in a supercar\u2014and would involve too much worrying about the car.<\/p>\n

3) He doesn\u2019t like modifying cars<\/h4>\n

Some supercar owners modify the exhaust to make it louder or lower the suspension, but he sees that as \u201cshowing a lack of respect for the engineers who built the car.\u201d<\/strong> Supercars cost a lot, so naturally they\u2019re built with high-quality parts. He doesn\u2019t like the idea of modifying a car\u2014developed, tested, and refined by engineers drawing on all their skill and expertise\u2014just to make it louder or change its appearance.<\/p>\n

He often puts it this way:<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who modify a supercar right after buying it are looking for validation from other people, aren\u2019t they? It\u2019s less about enjoying what makes the car great and more about wanting to look cool or stand out. That\u2019s just not how I see things. (-_-)\u201d<\/p>\n

(He\u2019s pretty blunt! Laughs.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What He Learned from Owning a McLaren 650S<\/h3>\n

My husband actually used to own a McLaren 650S. (Here it is \u2193)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"I asked him, \u201cIf you weren\u2019t interested in supercars, why did you buy one?\u201d<\/strong> He\u2019d been curious about McLaren because of its strong brand image and the glowing reviews in various magazines, which praised its ride comfort.<\/p>\n

But after his first drive, he came home saying, \u201cAll that talk about McLarens having a comfortable ride is nonsense! The Lamborghini Hurac\u00e1n and Ferrari 488 are much easier to drive and way more comfortable!\u201d<\/span> (Laughs.)<\/p>\n

Compared with the uncompromising supercars of years past, modern ones may be easier to drive, which could explain those reviews. But after driving all three cars on the same day\u2014including the McLaren 650S alongside a friend\u2019s Lamborghini Hurac\u00e1n and Ferrari 488\u2014he found the McLaren the most tiring.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why the McLaren 650S Felt So Tiring<\/h3>\n

When I asked, \u201cWhy was it so tiring?\u201d<\/strong> he explained it this way:<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, first of all, the engine noise.<\/strong> When you\u2019re stuck in traffic and idling for ages, it feels like you\u2019re sitting at a construction site the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I rode in the passenger seat a few times and drove it once on the Royu Driveway and the Hanshin Expressway, and I can confirm that the noise was tiring.<\/strong> It wasn\u2019t so much a sharp, explosive roar as a low, constant drone that seemed to cling to your ears. When I got out after driving, all I could think was, \u201cFinally, I\u2019m free of that noise! (\u309co\u309c)\u201d<\/p>\n

The steering was incredibly sharp and fun\u2014unlike anything I\u2019d experienced before\u2014but the brake pedal was so heavy that it would be a bit difficult for many women to drive.<\/strong>
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

My husband also said:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like you\u2019re driving directly on the road surface. The McLaren doesn\u2019t have any strange jolts, but the Ferrari and Lamborghini ride more smoothly.\u201d<\/p>\n

And:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt turns really sharply at intersections, but there\u2019s no self-centering force in the steering, so it gets tiring.\u201d<\/p>\n

That said, he also told me:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe McLaren is a fantastic car for the track.<\/strong> It\u2019s incredibly responsive and so much fun to drive. But I wouldn\u2019t choose it as an everyday car. Of course, it all comes down to personal preference\u2014whether it suits you or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

What My Husband Wants from a Car<\/h3>\n

My husband loves cars, but he also loves driving. He says a car isn\u2019t right for him if he wants to go for a drive but can\u2019t stay behind the wheel for long\u2014or ends up feeling stressed.<\/strong> For him, a car has to be both appealing in its own right and genuinely enjoyable to drive every day.<\/strong><\/p>\n

By that measure, Porsche makes a sports car that delivers on both. In fact, Porsche Principal (a booklet mailed to you after you buy a Porsche)<\/span> puts it this way:<\/p>\n

No other sports car can head out shopping after finishing a race at the N\u00fcrburgring. Even if the number of passengers varies, Porsche builds just one kind of car: a sports car for enjoying everyday life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That makes sense.
