It can make you do a double take: \u201cWait, is a child driving?\u201d Or even wonder if the car is driving itself with no one behind the wheel&#8230; (lol). You can barely see the driver at all.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the picture I have in mind.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u3046\u307e\u308b\u5973\u6027-800x530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I looked for an image like this, but of course there wasn\u2019t one, so I made it myself lol.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ideally, I think sitting up about this high would be just fine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u3046\u307e\u3089\u306a\u3044\u5973\u6027-800x530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Maybe this one\u2019s the opposite problem\u2014the seat is too high&#8230;)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I mentioned this to my husband once, and he said:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYeah, I know what you mean\u2014but you\u2019re doing the exact same thing (-_-).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSeriously?! (*_*)\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I thought I had a perfectly clear view of the road ahead and was driving with a proper seating position. But apparently, just like the women I\u2019d noticed, I was sitting so low that the lower half of my face was hidden.<\/p>\n<p>After that, I started looking into proper driving positions and realized <strong>how much an incorrect seating position can increase the risks of driving\u2014and how important it is to adjust your seat correctly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So today, I\u2019d like to share the video my husband showed me and that I used as a guide.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Learn the Right Driving Position from a Professional Racing Driver<\/h3>\n<p>Today\u2019s video, <strong>posted on Porsche\u2019s official YouTube channel, explains how to set your seat and steering wheel in the right position.<\/strong> It demonstrates the driving position for a Porsche 911 R, so the seat may sit lower than in an everyday car. But the advice covers fundamentals that matter in any car.<\/p>\n<p>The video is presented by <strong>Patrick Long, a professional racing driver and Porsche factory driver.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>.<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">..Wait, Patrick Long is the same age as me! (\u309co\u309c)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I thought he was older. People who compete on the world stage really do have a different kind of presence and gravitas&#8230; Anyway, that\u2019s beside the point.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hb9CUaYgklc?feature=oembed\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the start of the video, Patrick Long says that <strong>it\u2019s important to set the optimal driving position before starting the engine.<\/strong> The basics of driving begin with finding a position that lets you control the car properly at all times.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">How to Check Your Driving Position: Steps 1\u20133<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2460 Reach forward and check that your wrist meets the top of the steering wheel<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-12.43.08\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"637\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the women sitting low in their seats that I mentioned at the start, I imagine they\u2019d have to raise their arms quite a bit to bring their wrists to this point on the wheel. Adjust the seat height so you can comfortably reach the top of the steering wheel with your wrist.<\/p>\n<p>When I adjusted my seat to match, I was surprised by how high I ended up sitting: <strong>\u201cWait, I\u2019m supposed to drive from up here?!\u201d<\/strong> In other words, I really had been sinking too far down in the seat. lol<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2461 Check that you can operate the pedals comfortably<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3083\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-14.35.17\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"376\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Your knee should remain naturally bent, even when you press the clutch or accelerator pedal all the way down.<\/strong> Your knee shouldn\u2019t be bent so much that you feel cramped, but the seat shouldn\u2019t be so far back that your leg is fully stretched when you press the pedal, either.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2462 Adjust the steering wheel\u2019s height and reach<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3085\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-14.35.01\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" \/><br \/>\nHold the wheel with both hands and turn it as far as it will go. <strong>Make sure your shoulders stay against the seat and there\u2019s enough clearance between the wheel and your knees.<\/strong> If your shoulders lift off the seat, your knees get too close to the wheel, or the controls feel cramped, adjust the steering wheel until you can move comfortably.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/about-optimal-driving-position\/2\/\"><strong>\u2192Next page: I\u2019d been holding the steering wheel incorrectly\u2014and the full English transcript of the video.<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">How to Check Your Driving Position: Steps 4\u20135<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2463 Practice turning left and right with equal effort<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-14.52.00\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"367\" \/><br \/>\nHe seems to be saying that, since people have a dominant hand, we should practice turning with equal effort in both directions <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I think!)<\/span>. Being aware of this and practicing regularly should help you avoid reaching over the wheel or making other risky steering movements. He also says that <strong>the sports steering wheel has a marker at the top to help you keep track of its position.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2464 Hold the wheel at 9 and 3, then set off<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3086\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-14.53.19\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"652\" height=\"363\" \/><br \/>\nOnce you\u2019ve adjusted your arms, steering wheel, and feet, <strong>hold the wheel with both hands at the 9 and 3 o\u2019clock positions.<\/strong> <strong>I always thought you were supposed to hold the wheel at 10 and 2, but I guess not! (\u309co\u309c)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just as sports like tennis and golf have proper techniques, driving has a correct form, too. The first things I look at with seating position is that I&#8217;m sat low near the chassis.Next I&#8217;m looking at steering wheel depth getting about a wrist to the top of the steering wheel.<br \/>\nSo with the 911R we have a lightweight carbon-fiber bucket seat.<br \/>\nNot only does that get me load to the chassis but it gives me a lot of lateral support which is what you need. When you&#8217;re going faster the corners.<br \/>\nAnother big part of the seating position is your leg distance in relativity to the pedals.<br \/>\nWhat you need is a slight bend in the knee even when it&#8217;s full throw in the clutch or throttle pedal.<br \/>\nWith a steering settingI have two major adjustments the four aft and the up and down.<br \/>\nFirst key is that I get a slight bend in my elbow which gives you enough height clearance to clear your knee while being at full lock with your shoulder still against the seat.<br \/>\nWith your seating position and distances to pedals and steering set,the next thing you want to talk about is actually the function of using the steering wheel.<br \/>\nYou want to share the effort with both your left and right arms,so you&#8217;re equally pulling and pushing the weight as you turn.<br \/>\nWith the 911 our we have a sports steering wheel the top-center marking which gives you good reference to where you are with steering lock at all time.<br \/>\nWith a good arm and leg position my shoulders are back against the seat I&#8217;ve got a nine and three grip let&#8217;s start expiring the limits of this 911 are in the next lesson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Women Driving Larger Vehicles: A Common Seating Position Problem There\u2019s something I\u2019ve noticed for a long time\u2014and even briefly mentioned on this blog once before: many women driving larger vehicles seem to sit too low in their seats.
