It\u2019s the <strong>\u201cissue of low seating height for ladies driving large vehicles.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nI suspect it\u2019s because the seat isn\u2019t adjusted properly, but usually you can only see the upper half of their face. Sometimes I even mistake them for kids driving, or wonder if it\u2019s actually an unmanned self-driving car&#8230; that\u2019s how little of them you can see (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a rough image of what I mean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u3046\u307e\u308b\u5973\u6027-800x530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I searched for an image but obviously couldn\u2019t find one, so I made this myself, haha)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ideally, I think this kind of seating height would be fine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u3046\u307e\u3089\u306a\u3044\u5973\u6027-800x530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(This might actually be a bit too high&#8230;)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When I mentioned this to my husband before, he said:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Yeah, I get it, but I\u2019m in the same boat myself (-_-)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Seriously!? (*_*)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I thought my forward visibility was fine and that I was driving with a proper seat position, but apparently I\u2019m just like those ladies whose faces are half-buried below the window line.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, I started researching driving positions and realized <strong>\u201chow dangerous it can be to drive with the wrong position\u201d and \u201chow important it is to properly adjust your seat.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So today, I want to share a video my husband taught me about that I found very helpful.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Learning Driving Position from a Professional Racing Driver<\/h3>\n<p>The video I\u2019m sharing today is <strong>from Porsche\u2019s official YouTube channel, explaining the correct seat position and proper steering wheel placement.<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s about the driving position for the 911R, so the seat might be a bit lower than usual, but I think it covers essential basics that apply to any car.<\/p>\n<p>The explanation is given by <strong>Patrick Long, a professional racing driver and Porsche works driver.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>.<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8230;and by the way, Patrick Long is actually the same age as me! (\u309co\u309c)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I thought he\u2019d be older. People who succeed globally really have a different aura and presence&#8230; but anyway, that\u2019s beside the point.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hb9CUaYgklc?feature=oembed\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the start of the video, Patrick Long says it\u2019s <strong>\u201cimportant to set the optimal driving position before starting the engine.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nNo matter when or where, having the best position to fully control the car is fundamental to safe driving.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Checking Your Driving Position \u2460\u2013\u2462<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2460 Extend your arms and check if your wrists reach the top of the steering wheel<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-12.43.08\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"637\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For those ladies who sink deeply into the seat like I mentioned earlier, you probably have to raise your arms quite a bit to get your wrists to this position on the steering wheel. Adjust your seat height so your wrists can rest here comfortably.<\/p>\n<p>When I adjusted my seat to this position, I was shocked at <strong>\u201cWow! I\u2019m driving from this high up!?\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nWhich means I was definitely sitting way too low before (laughs).  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2461 Check if you can comfortably press the pedals<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3083\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-14.35.17\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"376\" \/><br \/>\nMake sure your knees can bend naturally while you can fully press the clutch or accelerator pedals.<br \/>\nIf your knees are bent too much, it\u2019s too cramped; if the seat is too far back, your leg will be fully stretched when pressing the pedals, which is also not good.  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2462 Check the steering wheel position (up\/down, forward\/back)<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3085\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-14.35.01\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" \/><br \/>\nHold the steering wheel with both hands and turn it fully.<br \/>\nMake sure <strong>your shoulders stay against the seat and there\u2019s enough space between your knees and the steering wheel.<\/strong><br \/>\nIf your shoulders lift off the seat or your knees hit the wheel, adjust the steering wheel position accordingly.  <\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/about-optimal-driving-position\/2\/\"><strong>\u2192Next page: The wrong way to hold the steering wheel, plus full English transcript of the video.<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Checking Your Driving Position \u2463\u2013\u2464<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2463 Practice turning left and right with equal effort<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-14.52.00\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"367\" \/><br \/>\nHumans have a dominant hand, but try to practice turning with equal effort on both sides, or so he says <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I think)<\/span>.<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re aware of this and practice regularly, you\u2019ll avoid dangerous steering habits like \u201chand-over-hand\u201d turns. Also, <strong>if you choose a sports steering wheel, it will have a marker line at the top center.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">\u2464 Grip the steering wheel at 3 and 9 o\u2019clock and go<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3086\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-07-09-14.53.19\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"652\" height=\"363\" \/><br \/>\nAfter adjusting your arm, steering wheel, and foot positions, <strong>grip the steering wheel with both hands at the 3 and 9 o\u2019clock positions.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I always thought the correct grip was at 10 and 2 o\u2019clock, but apparently that\u2019s not right (\u309co\u309c).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just like sports such as tennis or golf have correct forms, driving has its own proper form too.<br \/>\nThis concept isn\u2019t very familiar in Japan, where motorsports culture isn\u2019t deeply rooted, but I truly believe the driving position is very important.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Full English Transcript<\/h3>\n<p>By the way, I transcribed the English subtitles from the video <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(there might be some minor mistakes)<\/span>, so if you want to know the full text, please refer to it below and try translating it yourself. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(If you do, please let me know! Haha)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">So before you even start the engine,you need to set an optimal driving position.<br \/>\nCome on let me show you.<br \/>\nDriving on the limit seating position has to be optimal to get to all the controls. The first things I look at with seating position is that I&#8217;m sat low near the chassis.Next I&#8217;m looking at steering wheel depth getting about a wrist to the top of the steering wheel.<br \/>\nSo with the 911R we have a lightweight carbon-fiber bucket seat.<br \/>\nNot only does that get me load to the chassis but it gives me a lot of lateral support which is what you need. When you&#8217;re going faster the corners.<br \/>\nAnother big part of the seating position is your leg distance in relativity to the pedals.<br \/>\nWhat you need is a slight bend in the knee even when it&#8217;s full throw in the clutch or throttle pedal.<br \/>\nWith a steering settingI have two major adjustments the four aft and the up and down.<br \/>\nFirst key is that I get a slight bend in my elbow which gives you enough height clearance to clear your knee while being at full lock with your shoulder still against the seat.<br \/>\nWith your seating position and distances to pedals and steering set,the next thing you want to talk about is actually the function of using the steering wheel.<br \/>\nYou want to share the effort with both your left and right arms,so you&#8217;re equally pulling and pushing the weight as you turn.<br \/>\nWith the 911 our we have a sports steering wheel the top-center marking which gives you good reference to where you are with steering lock at all time.<br \/>\nWith a good arm and leg position my shoulders are back against the seat I&#8217;ve got a nine and three grip let&#8217;s start expiring the limits of this 911 are in the next lesson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Women Driving Large Vehicles I\u2019ve thought about this for a while and even briefly mentioned it once on this blog.
