“Race on Sunday, drive on Monday”<\/h3>\n

“Why is it that you can recognize a Porsche at a glance?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese cars are often said to be hard to identify by manufacturer once the emblem is removed(though some are recognizable)<\/span>. In contrast, whether old or new, SUV or sports car, you can instantly tell it\u2019s a Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why is that? While pondering this, I recently came across this page(Porsche \u2013 Everyday Usability)<\/a>. It said:<\/p>\n

“Race on Sunday, drive on Monday” was the motto of many Porsche 356 drivers in the 1950s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019m not fluent in English, but I think it means something like “It\u2019s important that one Porsche can be enjoyed both on the racetrack and in everyday driving.”<\/strong> This has been a guiding philosophy passed down since Porsche\u2019s inception. Even now, when you purchase a Porsche, the “Porsche Principle” sent to owners states:<\/p>\n

There is no other sports car that lets you go shopping right after racing at the N\u00fcrburgring. Even if the number of passengers varies, Porsche creates just one thing: a sports car to enjoy every day.<\/p>\n

This unchanging spirit might be the key reason why you can recognize a Porsche at a glance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Porsche from an Expert\u2019s Perspective<\/h3>\n

Recently, I interviewed President Nakagawa of Nakabayashi Kogyo<\/a>, a custom car body cover specialist often featured on \u201cMinkara\u201d and other automotive media. He was very kind and shared a lot, which I\u2019ll publish later. What struck me was what he said about Porsche:<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve measured body covers for many manufacturers, but measuring a Porsche\u2019s body cover is very easy.<\/strong> That\u2019s because Porsche\u2019s design is refined, simple, and natural. That streamlined shape isn\u2019t just for looks; it\u2019s the result of pursuing aerodynamics and functionality, making it instantly recognizable as a Porsche to anyone.<\/strong> Other manufacturers often have awkward designs that make measuring difficult, but Porsche is very well done in that regard.<\/p>\n

Humble Elegance<\/h3>\n

The first Porsche, the 356, born 70 years ago, featured a design emphasizing aerodynamic concepts, ultra-lightweight construction, and practical characteristics.<\/strong> Even after 70 years, the essence of Porsche design remains unchanged, as introduced on the official Porsche Japan website:<\/p>\n

Why have Porsche sports cars become design icons? Is it because they are beautiful? Because people find them \u201ccaptivating\u201d? Of course. But the true reason lies in the perfect harmony between design and function.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The flowing roofline, the front fenders arching higher than the hood, and the powerful rear fenders\u2014these features common to all Porsche models have been subtly adapted over 60 years to suit the times and each model\u2019s personality.

“Tradition and innovation. High performance and practicality. Design and functionality. Exclusivity and social responsibility\u2014Porsche\u2019s essence is balancing these opposing elements.”<\/strong> I once read this in an article. Porsche\u2019s commitment to this balance over 70 years is truly impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Shuichi Yamashita\u2019s Perspective<\/h3>\n

In fact, Porsche\u2019s management places great importance on design. Shuichi Yamashita, Porsche AG\u2019s exterior designer (the Japanese designer responsible for the Panamera Sport Turismo\u2019s design)<\/span>, said in an interview:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat sets Porsche apart is the extremely strict demands from management regarding design. Especially in management meetings where top executives and designers gather, even the smallest body line is discussed and sometimes rejected.\u201d

The reason you can instantly recognize a Porsche is because everyone involved in design, including management, understands the importance of Porsche\u2019s design and protects it no matter how much times change.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is the Panamera\u2019s Design Like a \u25cf\u25cf\u25cf Drowned Corpse?<\/h3>\n

That said, Porsche\u2019s design has also faced criticism. Jeremy Clarkson, the main host of the hugely popular BBC car show “Top Gear” until 2015, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I wonder if Porsche even has designers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cayenne, like much of Porsche\u2019s lineup, isn\u2019t very well designed. It\u2019s as ugly as a badger carcass that died two weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Panamera\u2019s design looks like a drowned 911.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was brutally critical\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\n

Porsche\u2019s design is the result of balancing two elements\u2014\u201cfunctionality\u201d and \u201cbeauty\u201d\u2014at a high level,<\/strong> and personally, I find it very beautiful. I\u2019m really looking forward to Porsche\u2019s future evolution.
