According to the owner, it\u2019s been upgraded to an aftermarket twin-plate clutch with a lightweight flywheel.<br \/>Even so, it remains sufficiently heavy. The 991 and 981 models also have fairly heavy clutches, but the 997 is even more demanding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting the engine is typical of the 996 and 997 series\u2014not flashy at all.<\/strong> The tachometer needle gently rises to around 2000rpm before settling into idle.<\/p>\n<p>When you lightly rev the throttle, the response is surprisingly sharp compared to the startup feel. Especially with the lightweight flywheel fitted, managing the revs can be tricky.<\/p>\n<p>Carefully engaging the clutch, I set off.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31942\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31942\" class=\"size-large wp-image-31942\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_7797-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 GT3 (997)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cast iron brakes were deliberately chosen for circuit use<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first impression is that the <strong>ride quality is surprisingly good.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The suspension is stock PASM with normal ride height, completely original. Compared to the 991 or 992 GT3, the ride is noticeably softer. Even with ADVAN Neova tires fitted, the comfort is excellent.<\/p>\n<p>Setting PASM to Sport mode only introduces a slight firmness, making this the mildest road feel of any GT3 I\u2019ve driven so far.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the car is low with short suspension travel, so larger bumps will still unsettle it\u2014you can\u2019t expect the same comfort as a regular Carrera, so keep that in mind.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_GT3s_Engine_and_Suspension\"><\/span>The GT3\u2019s Engine and Suspension<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The engine still revs freely. It\u2019s a classic high-revving powerplant where power scales beautifully with rpm, which feels fantastic. Having recently driven turbocharged 992 and 718 models, this naturally aspirated engine feels even more rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>With 435ps and 43.5kg\u00b7m, the 992 might feel quicker at low to mid-range speeds, but the high-rpm acceleration is truly exceptional\u2014beyond what the numbers suggest.<\/p>\n<p>This is unmistakably a true \u2018GT3.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-31938\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_7808-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Instrument panel of Porsche 911 GT3 (997)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are no aids like auto-blip, so you have to match revs yourself. With the lightweight flywheel, the engine responds so quickly that it often over-revs, making it hard to get the perfect rev match.<\/p>\n<p>After some trial and error, I finally got used to the engine\u2019s responsiveness.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_GT3s_Handling_Is_Where_Its_True_Strength_Lies\"><\/span>The GT3\u2019s Handling Is Where Its True Strength Lies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Regarding engine and power delivery, the 997 GT3 shares a similar feel with the 991 and 992 GT3s, though with different power figures.<\/p>\n<p>But the biggest difference is in the handling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This GT3 is honestly \u201cchallenging\u201d to drive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-31932\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_8270-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 GT3 (997)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or rather, <strong>the 991 and 992 are just too easy.<\/strong> I believe this is the true chassis setup of the original GT3.<\/p>\n<p>At first, if you drive it like a 991 or 992 GT3\u2014just turning the steering wheel normally entering a corner\u2014you might think, \u201c<strong>Wait, is this really how a GT3 feels?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trying the same approach on the next corner, the slightest change in body movement and yaw response can be felt.<\/p>\n<p>Even on the following corner, the behavior doesn\u2019t quite repeat consistently.<\/p>\n<p>Then, <strong>taking a proper driving position, firmly pressing the footrest with your left foot, anchoring your shoulders against the seatback, and steering by pushing with your shoulders as a pivot,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>in other words, driving by the book\u2014loading the front tires through the corner while steering\u2014the previously dormant GT3 suddenly springs to life as if saying, \u201cI\u2019ve been waiting for this!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you get the feeling of \u201c<strong>Yes, this is how a GT3 should behave.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once you understand this, the GT3 becomes incredibly fun.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-31930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_8272-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear of Porsche 911 GT3 (997)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 997 GT3 clearly reflects the driver\u2019s skill in the car\u2019s behavior.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the 991 and 992 GT3s also do this at circuit speeds, on regular winding roads at everyday speeds, anyone can carve razor-sharp corners just by turning the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the major difference.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-31939\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_7806-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Interior of Porsche 911 GT3 (997)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The better the driver, the more the 997 GT3 rewards them.<\/p>\n<p>If you make a mistake or delay your weight transfer or steering input, the car\u2019s behavior immediately reflects it. This makes it difficult to drive consistently and reproduce the same line.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, drivers naturally want to drive smoothly and enjoyably, constantly experimenting to master the GT3.<br \/><strong>It\u2019s this \u201ctrial and error\u201d process that makes driving this GT3 so engaging.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_More_Skilled_You_Are_the_More_You_Appreciate_It\"><\/span>The More Skilled You Are, the More You Appreciate It<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A racer who has competed in the Porsche Carrera Cup once said, \u201c<strong>The 992 Cup car is insanely fast. But the 991 Cup car was more fun. And the 997 was even more fun than that.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After this test drive, I feel I understand that sentiment a little better.<\/p>\n<p>The driver\u2019s inputs (controls) directly affect the car\u2019s behavior (output).<br \/>This is the analog driving pleasure, and mastering it is what makes it \u201cfun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-31945\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_7799-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear tail lamp of Porsche 911 GT3 (997)\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking of buying a 997 GT3, it\u2019s best to take at least a basic sports driving course first.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s too much of a waste for beginners to drive one just for looks or status.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how I feel about the Porsche 997 GT3.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For some reason, this blog has very few articles about the 997 or 987 models.It\u2019s not that I dislike them\u2014in fact, I\u2019m quite interested in these Porsches\u2014but surprisingly few people around me own them, so opportunities for coverage have been limited.
