I hadn\u2019t written Vol.2 yet…<\/h3>\n

The other day, my husband said to me, \u201cYou often end your blog posts with something like, \u2018I\u2019ll write more about \u25cf\u25cf later\u2019 or call it Vol.1 as if it\u2019s a series, but haven\u2019t you actually never followed up with those articles?\u201d<\/strong> Indeed… (\u2212_\u2212) So, I decided to write a sequel to this article I posted before.<\/p>\n

\u2192\u3010Past article\u3011Mastering the Boxster GTS (MT) \u2013 Until That Day Comes Vol.1<\/a><\/p>\n

Since writing that article on April 25, I actually haven\u2019t driven the MT Boxster even once (LOL)<\/strong>\u2014at best, I practiced driving with paddle shifters on PlayStation. But saying that won\u2019t make me any better at manual driving, so last weekend I finally decided to give driving the Boxster GTS a try.<\/p>\n

Reviewing manual driving<\/h3>\n

I asked my husband, \u201cCan I go to the Royu Driveway tomorrow to practice driving the Boxster? I\u2019ll drive the Boxster, and you can follow behind in case anything happens, so it\u2019ll be safe.\u201d <\/p>\n

Okay, that\u2019s fine. But really, you should be able to go alone without saying stuff like that.<\/p>\n

Still, before going to bed, I reviewed manual driving. I asked, \u201cWait, how do you start again? Do you press the clutch and brake while the gear is in \u2018parking\u2019?\u201d<\/strong> <\/p>\n

What are you talking about? Manual cars don\u2019t have parking; it\u2019s neutral (\u2212_\u2212)<\/p>\n

I was surprised. \u201cReally? Is that right\u2026? (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f) Then, um\u2026 do you move the gear first? When do you release the clutch? Do you press the accelerator first?\u201d I kept asking silly questions, and my husband finally gave me a disbelieving look: <\/p>\n

\u2026Are you seriously okay? Are you really asking these questions (\u2212_\u2212)?<\/p>\n

But somehow, the morning of the day arrived.<\/p>\n

Finally, practice time in the Boxster!<\/h3>\n

First, my husband led the way in the Boxster, and I followed with our daughters in the Panamera. We switched drivers at a parking lot just past the Royu Driveway toll booth. Just in case, we set up a FaceTime call,<\/strong> and I climbed into the driver\u2019s seat of the Boxster. (From here on, the story follows the words and actions of a complete beginner at manual driving, so please forgive the very basic level of the story.)<\/span><\/p>\n

I checked the steering wheel position, adjusted the seat position and height,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

and tested whether I could fully press the clutch and brake pedals,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

and practiced gear operation,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

but I kept hesitating and not moving forward while chatting on FaceTime. <\/p>\n

Come on, just start moving already.<\/p>\n

My husband urged me…<\/p>\n

Since the parking lot was slightly uphill, the \u201cHOLD\u201d light came on, so I took my foot off the brake, pressed the accelerator to about 1000 rpm, and slowly released the clutch. Someone used to manual driving would probably do this in about 5 seconds, but for me, it felt like it took about 30 seconds because I released the clutch way too slowly (LOL).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eventually, the car started moving forward little by little. At that moment, the feeling I had practiced before with manual driving came back. That\u2019s right, that\u2019s the feeling when the clutch engages ( \uff9f\u2200\uff9f). It\u2019s hard to understand when thinking about it, but my body remembered that feeling well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Started driving smoothly, but then…<\/h3>\n

I moved the car to the merge point with the main road, stopped, and started again from first gear. I soon gained some speed, shifted into second gear, and smoothly engaged the clutch. Wow, that was smooth! ( \uff9f\u2200\uff9f)<\/p>\n

After that, I drove in third and fourth gears, but downshifting didn\u2019t go well, causing jolts and shocks, which made me think it\u2019s really difficult,<\/strong> yet I managed to reach the Royu Driveway observatory. I put the car in neutral, thinking I could park facing forward, but…<\/p>\n

I stopped well before the parking line.<\/span><\/p>\n

Panicking, I tried to shift into first gear to try again but pushed too hard and accidentally shifted into reverse (R). \u201cWhat?! Why am I going backward!?<\/strong>\u201d I panicked and stalled the engine, but my husband got out of the Panamera and helped me park. (Though this is not really the time to feel relieved.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Though it was less than five minutes of manual driving, I was very tense and exhausted, so that ended Manual Driving Vol.2 for me. After getting home, I was so drained I downed a Chocola BB in one go.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on manual driving<\/h3>\n

Later, I asked my husband about the shifting shocks, and he said, <\/p>\n

If you switch to Sport Plus mode, it automatically matches the engine revs when downshifting, so the shifts are smooth without shocks.<\/p>\n

I see. Then he added, <\/p>\n

But at that speed, you\u2019re not really enjoying the Boxster\u2019s driving fun yet. You need to practice more.<\/p>\n

Absolutely true (\u2212_\u2212).<\/p>\n

My husband said it took him about 10,000 km before he could drive a manual smoothly and naturally, like breathing.<\/strong> I\u2019ve probably only driven about 3 km so far. But after driving again for the first time in three months, I was happy and a bit confident that my body still remembered the feel of starting off. (Before, I would forget the feeling every time I practiced, so it was like starting over.)<\/span><\/p>\n
