Are Luxury Car Dealers Intimidating?<\/h3>\n

When browsing the internet, you often see things like “Luxury car dealers are hard to enter”<\/strong> or “They check your watch, so it\u2019s better not to wear a cheap one”<\/strong>. Some even say “If you go to a Maserati dealer in a T-shirt and jeans, you\u2019ll get a really nasty look.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

> Seriously, isn\u2019t that a bit of an exaggeration? (laughs)<\/p>\n

It feels like these rumors have taken on a life of their own, becoming more entertaining than factual. So, I asked my husband about his experience when he first visited a Porsche dealer.<\/p>\n

On the Way Back from a Meeting<\/h3>\n

My husband\u2019s first visit to a Porsche dealer was on a weekday in the winter of 2014. It was around the time he thought, “I might finally be able to afford a Boxster.”<\/strong> Since a work meeting ended early that day, he suddenly thought, “Hey, why not stop by the Porsche dealer to check out the Boxster on the way home?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

He called the dealer right away and said, “I\u2019d like to see the Boxster on display…”<\/strong> and was told, “We have one on display, please come by.”<\/strong> So he went straight there. When I asked, “You just went to look at the display car, not to test drive?” he said,<\/p>\n

“I\u2019d never really seen a Boxster up close before, so I just wanted to take a good look at it first.”<\/p>\n

Then I asked, “What were you wearing? Did you pay attention to your watch or anything?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, I didn\u2019t think about it at all. I probably just wore a normal shirt and pants. I stopped by after work, so I don\u2019t even remember what watch I had on.<\/p>\n

By the way, the car he drove that day was a Mercedes-Benz SLK350<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Once You Test Drive, There\u2019s No Turning Back<\/h3>\n

When he arrived, Mr. H, the sales rep who still takes care of us, came out and showed him the Boxster on display. While chatting, my husband said, “I\u2019m torn between the Boxster and the Boxster GTS.”<\/strong> Then Mr. H said,<\/p>\n

“The GTS is definitely better. We\u2019ll get a Boxster GTS test drive car soon\u2014shall I contact you as soon as it arrives?”<\/p>\n

He replied, “Absolutely!” and went home that day. Later, when he got the call that the Boxster GTS test drive car had arrived, he went right away, and after the drive said, “Wow, this is amazing! I\u2019m buying it!” He placed the order in January 2015. (That was fast! lol)<\/span><\/p>\n

By the way, I had never been to the dealer before he ordered the Boxster. One day he came home and said, “I ordered the Boxster!”<\/strong> and I was like, “What!? When did that happen?\u30fd(\uff9f\u0414\uff9f )\uff89!?”<\/strong> But we had talked about buying a Boxster quite a bit before, so<\/p>\n

From Order to Delivery<\/h3>\n

So, in January 2015, my husband ordered a left-hand drive, manual Boxster GTS<\/strong>. Since “left-hand drive manual GTS”<\/strong> is a limited production option,<\/p>\n

“I wouldn\u2019t have been able to buy it anyway. I thought I\u2019d go once I had a clearer idea. But I kept looking at photos of the Porsche key on my phone, kind of imprinting the feeling of being a Porsche owner into my subconscious.”<\/p>\n

What Did My Husband Pay Attention To?<\/h3>\n

Now, the important question: “When you went to the Porsche dealer, did you pay attention to your outfit or appearance?”<\/strong> He said,<\/p>\n

“I never cared about that, and I don\u2019t think you really need to. Well, the first time I went was a casual weekday afternoon, so maybe they thought I wasn\u2019t a typical office worker.”<\/p>\n

I see… Also, a friend of his once went to a Porsche dealer wearing “a flashy gold watch and a luxury bag,”<\/strong> which was a very obvious look, but ironically he stood out and it created an awkward atmosphere (laughs).<\/p>\n

What Do Salespeople Think?<\/h3>\n

Still, I wondered how the salespeople feel about this. So I once asked a dealer, “Does the way a customer dresses or the car they arrive in affect how you treat them?”<\/strong> The dealer replied,<\/p>\n

Honestly, salespeople are human too, and I\u2019ve heard stories of people who came in a kei car and were completely ignored. Of course, that\u2019s not right, but treatment varies depending on the salesperson and dealer, so there\u2019s no hard-and-fast rule… However, since the Macan was released, Porsche\u2019s customer base has broadened quite a bit. Also, Porsche isn\u2019t about specs or fuel economy\u2014it\u2019s a car you have to experience by test driving, so we really want people to come and try one out.<\/p>\n

Makes sense. So, there\u2019s no strict rule\u2014just be yourself, dress appropriately for the occasion, and go with the flow.<\/strong> That\u2019s probably true for Porsche, but I wonder if it\u2019s different for Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Bentley?<\/p>\n
