Manual Porsche Models You Can\u2019t Buy in Japan<\/h3>\n

My husband often says, \u201cYou can get a manual transmission in Germany, but they don\u2019t bring those models to Japan,\u201d<\/strong> or, \u201cIt\u2019s a great car, but it has PDK, so I\u2019m not interested.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know much about the situation myself, so I assumed that all 911s and Porsche sports cars were available with a manual transmission. It turns out that isn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n

So I looked into this question: \u201cOf the models currently listed on Porsche Japan\u2019s official website, how many can be ordered with a manual transmission?\u201d<\/strong> (Checked July 17, 2018)<\/span><\/p>\n

Just 11 Out of 58 Models<\/h3>\n

Porsche Japan\u2019s official website currently lists 58 models, but only 11 are available with a manual transmission<\/strong>. I\u2019ve listed the full lineup below; the models shown in red can be ordered with a manual.<\/p>\n

I can understand why the Panamera, Cayenne, and Macan aren\u2019t offered with a manual, but none of the 911 GTS models? (\u201cNone\u201d might be putting it a bit harshly\u2026)<\/span> And if you want a brand-new open-top Porsche with a manual in Japan, the Boxster is your only option<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While researching Porsche manuals online, I came across this article:<\/p>\n

Keeping a manual transmission in the new-generation 911, introduced seven years after its predecessor, and bringing it to Japan as well, is quite an achievement. (Omitted) Even back in the Tiptronic era, the proportion of 911s sold with manuals in Japan was negligible. And with PDK having evolved yet again, it\u2019s remarkable that Porsche has kept the manual available in the Japanese lineup.

Germany\u2019s current lineup has 55 models (the previous-generation Cayenne sold in Japan is no longer on sale there).<\/span> In addition to the 11 models with manuals in Japan, Germany offers nine more\u2014bringing the total to an impressive 20 models with a manual transmission. Here\u2019s the breakdown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s quite a selection of 911s! Unlike Japan, Germany offers manuals in Cabriolet and Targa models, as well as some GTS versions. You can even get a manual in the 911 Carrera T.<\/strong> My husband once got pretty worked up about the Carrera T not coming to Japan with a manual, saying, \u201cThat makes no sense! The whole point of the T is lost!\u201d<\/strong> (laughs)<\/p>\n

A Rare Breed: Manual Porsches<\/h3>\n

You can technically get manual models that aren\u2019t officially sold in Japan through parallel imports. But a mechanic at a repair shop we spoke with recently told us that many Porsche dealers these days won\u2019t even inspect or repair parallel-import cars, so it\u2019s better to buy through an official dealer<\/strong>. (The dealer we use apparently does service parallel imports, so policies vary from dealer to dealer.)<\/span><\/p>\n

That makes owners of manual 911 Targas, Cabriolets, and Turbos in Japan especially lucky\u2014they\u2019re driving some truly rare Porsches. Those models are no longer officially imported into Japan, after all. I took a look at used-car listings, and they still command pretty high prices. (And wow, air-cooled Porsche prices are seriously high!)<\/span><\/p>\n

As the world moves steadily toward autonomous driving, manual-transmission cars are likely to become even rarer. Just be warned: once you start playing with the car configurator, your imagination can run wild, and an hour can fly by before you know it.
