Manual Transmission Models Not Imported to Japan<\/h3>\n

My husband often says, “In Germany, you can choose manual transmission specs, but they just don\u2019t bring them into Japan,” “\u25cf\u25cf is a great car, but since it\u2019s PDK, I don\u2019t want it.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t very familiar with the details, so I had assumed that all Porsche sports cars like the 911 could be had with a manual transmission, but apparently that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n

So, I decided to look into \u201chow many models currently listed on Porsche Japan\u2019s official website actually offer a manual transmission option\u201d<\/strong>. (Surveyed on July 17, 2018)<\/span><\/p>\n

Only 11 out of 58<\/h3>\n

The Porsche Japan official site currently lists 58 models, but only 11 of those offer a manual transmission option<\/strong>. Below is a full list of the lineup, with the manual-available models marked in red.<\/p>\n

I can understand why there are no manuals for Panamera, Cayenne, or Macan, but no GTS models for the 911 at all? (I know \u201cnone at all\u201d sounds harsh\u2026)<\/span> Also, in Japan, if you want a new manual convertible, you basically have to choose the Boxster. While researching Porsche manuals online, I found this article:<\/p>\n

Porsche\u2019s decision to keep a manual option for the new generation 911 after seven years, and for the importer to bring it to Japan, is quite an achievement. (Omitted) Even with the upgrade to a 7-speed matching the PDK, the manual ratio for 911s in Japan has been negligible since the Tiptronic days. Considering that PDK has evolved further, it\u2019s remarkable that the manual was retained for the Japanese market.

The current lineup in Germany is 55 models (the current Cayenne sold in Japan is no longer available there).<\/span> In addition to the 11 manual models available in Japan, Germany offers 9 more, making a total of 20 models with manual transmission available. Wow, the 911 lineup is rich. Unlike Japan, you can get manuals on convertibles, Targas, and even GTS models. You can also get a manual on the 911 T.<\/strong> I remember my husband once got really frustrated about the 911 T manual not being imported to Japan, saying “That\u2019s unbelievable! That totally defeats the purpose of the T!”<\/strong> (lol)<\/p>\n

Rare Manual Cars<\/h3>\n

While you can get manual models not imported to Japan through parallel imports, I recently heard from a mechanic that most Porsche dealers won\u2019t even service or repair parallel-imported cars, so it\u2019s better to buy through official channels<\/strong>. (Though the dealer we use does service parallel imports, so it seems to vary by dealer policy.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering that, those currently driving manual 911 Targas, Cabriolets, or Turbos in Japan are really lucky to have such rare cars. They simply won\u2019t be imported anymore. I checked used car sites, and they still command quite high prices. (And wow, used air-cooled Porsches are insanely expensive!)<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, as the world shifts more toward autonomous driving, manuals will likely become even more precious. For details on non-manual specs, please visit the official Porsche Japan website<\/a>. By the way, once you start using the car configurator, be careful\u2014it\u2019s easy to lose track of time and spend an hour daydreaming!
