The deciding moment came when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/glb220d-4matic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a friend let me ride in their GLB 200 d\u2014and I was impressed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, our family car had been a Porsche Cayenne. Its performance was excellent, but <strong>its width often made parking a challenge in the city, whether at family restaurants, convenience stores, or hospitals.<\/strong> That was the main reason we decided to replace it with a GLB.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/A74D5A23-5249-448F-954F-19BD65BD0C3D-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB200d 4MATIC\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Research_and_Expectations_Before_Buying\"><\/span>Research and Expectations Before Buying<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Before buying, I test-drove my younger brother\u2019s GLA 200 d 4MATIC and also got behind the wheel of the friend\u2019s GLB 200 d 4MATIC mentioned above. I wanted to evaluate both performance and comfort. <strong>The GLB felt more nimble and sporty than I\u2019d expected<\/strong>, while its comfort seemed more than adequate.<\/p>\n<p>I was also looking forward to the convenience of its seven seats. We sometimes travel with our family of five plus my sister and her child, so I thought the GLB would be a great fit for family outings.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"GLB_200_d_Performance_and_Fuel_Economy\"><\/span>GLB 200 d Performance and Fuel Economy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Real-World_Fuel_Economy_After_7000_km\"><\/span>Real-World Fuel Economy After 7,000 km<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Fuel economy is likely one of the first things many readers want to know. Based on the trip data reset after the break-in period, the average is 13.7 km\/L.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30952\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/EA7509A7-20C1-479C-B9F3-FE5EB0FAC225.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB200d 4MATIC\u306e\u5b9f\u71c3\u8cbb\" width=\"1170\" height=\"918\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That figure reflects my usual driving: I don\u2019t go out of my way to save fuel, and simply drive with the flow of traffic at my own pace. With a more fuel-conscious approach, I think you could do better.<\/p>\n<p>On the highway, 18\u201320 km\/L is achievable in normal driving. Even if you push on a little, you can expect around 15 km\/L.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_It_Drives_in_the_City_and_on_the_Highway\"><\/span>How It Drives in the City and on the Highway<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In stop-and-go city traffic, <strong>the diesel engine\u2019s strong low-end torque means the GLB never feels sluggish.<\/strong> I haven\u2019t found myself wanting for power; it accelerates just as I expect it to.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the gearing feels lower than I anticipated, with the automatic transmission holding first and second gears for a while. When accelerating normally with traffic, it shifts up at around 2,000\u20133,000 rpm. Switching to Eco mode doesn\u2019t make much difference.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/A8140A9E-0FCF-44FB-A810-A07D7B6CCEFD-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB200d AMG\u30e9\u30a4\u30f3\u30d1\u30c3\u30b1\u30fc\u30b8\u306e\u30bf\u30a4\u30e4\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The engine delivers maximum torque from 1,400 rpm, so I wish the transmission would shift up sooner and more smoothly at lower revs.<\/p>\n<p>At around 100 km\/h on the highway, the GLB doesn\u2019t feel quite as planted as I\u2019d expect from a German car. It\u2019s stable and reassuring, of course, but it lacks a certain sense of composure.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>at the kind of speeds you might encounter while leading the fast lane on the Shin-Tomei Expressway, the GLB becomes impressively stable.<\/strong> The tires feel more firmly planted, and the car starts to track straight as an arrow. It\u2019s a reminder that, at heart, this is a car built in the home of the Autobahn.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"GLB_200_d_Interior_and_Comfort\"><\/span>GLB 200 d Interior and Comfort<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Seat_Comfort_and_the_Third_Row\"><\/span>Seat Comfort and the Third Row<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30956\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/EAEC3A21-9898-4A5F-B8E5-F60598322C95.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB200d\u306eAMG\u30ec\u30b6\u30fc\u30a8\u30af\u30b9\u30af\u30eb\u30fc\u30b7\u30d6\u30d1\u30c3\u30b1\u30fc\u30b8\u306e\u30b7\u30fc\u30c8\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My car has the AMG Leather Exclusive Package, which includes gray-and-black leather seats. The leather is somewhat thick and firm, so <strong>these seats don\u2019t have the soft, cushy feel some people might expect.<\/strong> Drivers used to Japanese cars may not find them to their taste. Personally, I\u2019d prefer a slightly softer material, too.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I have no complaints about long-distance comfort. <strong>Even after covering 500 km in a day on a Tokyo\u2013Osaka drive, I haven\u2019t had any particular trouble with back pain.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/89271A3E-D051-4D46-AE65-16D30521FE64-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB200d\u306e\u30a8\u30f3\u30b8\u30f3\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30954-2\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30954-2\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30954\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/5F5F2139-793A-4276-925E-589F5FA2B7A6.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB 200d\u306e2\u5217\u76ee\u30b7\u30fc\u30c8\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30954-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Second-row seats<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of width in the second row, and even a large child seat will fit. The seat base is a little short, though, so taller adult men may find their knees sit slightly higher, which can feel a bit unusual if you\u2019re expecting a particularly comfortable seat.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30955-2\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30955-2\" class=\"wp-image-30955 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/E25943B2-473C-4594-B8B3-0E9AD37064D1.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB200d\u306e3\u5217\u76ee\u30b7\u30fc\u30c8\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30955-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Third-row seats<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The third row is compact and best suited to passengers up to 168 cm tall. Many reviews point to it as a drawback, but in practice, it hasn\u2019t been much of an issue for us.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s a different story if you\u2019re planning to carry seven adults. But <strong>the third row is perfectly adequate for children<\/strong>, who seem to enjoy its cozy, tucked-away feel.<\/p>\n<p>Even an adult can sit back there without their head touching the roof if the second row is moved slightly forward. It\u2019s comfortable enough for trips of around an hour or less.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ease_of_Use_The_Infotainment_System\"><\/span>Ease of Use: The Infotainment System<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The infotainment system takes a little time to get used to, especially when learning how its menus are organized. But the screen is easy to read, and you can control it using either the touchpad on the center console or the steering-wheel buttons, so I have no major complaints.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/47DD5395-76AA-4326-81AB-E0A691DC7364-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB200d 4MATIC\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The factory navigation system has a clear display and easy-to-follow directions, but its route choices can sometimes be questionable.<\/p>\n<p>I put up with it at first, but it kept suggesting routes that didn\u2019t seem quite right. <strong>So I later bought the \u201cSmartphone Integration\u201d option (\u00a536,600) through the online Mercedes me Store<\/strong>, which lets me use Apple CarPlay on my iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>Now I use CarPlay to display my phone\u2019s navigation on the screen virtually 100% of the time.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"GLB_200_d_Pros_and_Cons_The_Verdict\"><\/span>GLB 200 d Pros and Cons: The Verdict<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_We_Love_About_It\"><\/span>What We Love About It<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Its biggest strength is its practical balance: the GLB is reasonably compact, yet can seat seven when needed.<\/p>\n<p>Its performance and driving feel are also impressive. The stability at higher speeds feels true to a car designed in the home of the Autobahn, while it can be surprisingly agile on winding roads.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, <strong>there\u2019s no sense of compromise when it comes to going, turning, or stopping.<\/strong> It may not be the kind of car that makes every drive feel like an event, but, true to the Mercedes-Benz character, it\u2019s a dependable partner that gets the job done with confidence.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/A78CBAC5-B357-4728-A6FA-4590C9644A63-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"GLB200d 4MATIC \u30a2\u30f3\u30d3\u30a8\u30f3\u30c8\u30e9\u30a4\u30c8\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m also very satisfied with the cabin\u2019s upscale feel. Details like the ambient lighting, the quality of the dashboard and door trim, and even the feel and sound of the doors closing never come across as cheap.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Could_Be_Improved\"><\/span>What Could Be Improved<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I have very few real complaints. If I had to pick three things I\u2019d like to see improved, they\u2019d be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Pirelli P Zero tires fitted as standard with the AMG Line Package\u2019s 19-inch wheels can feel overly high-performance, making the handling very sharp and responsive.<\/strong> A tire with a more comfortable character might suit the GLB better. Options such as Michelin\u2019s Primacy range or Bridgestone\u2019s Turanza range, for example, could improve owner satisfaction with their ride comfort and quietness.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I\u2019d like the seats to be more comfortable.<\/strong> In particular, the leather material and the length of the second-row seat base could be improved. I\u2019m not expecting seats like those in a GLE or GLS, but a softer, more supple material would be welcome.<\/li>\n<li>The GLB is a pleasure to drive when you\u2019re pushing on, but <strong>I\u2019d like the automatic transmission to shift at lower rpm in city driving.<\/strong> When pulling away from a stop or crawling in traffic, for example, it would be nice if the car made better use of the diesel engine\u2019s low-end torque for smooth acceleration, rather than relying on higher revs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those are my real-world impressions after buying the GLB 200 d 4MATIC. I\u2019m extremely satisfied with it.
