And <strong>since we wanted to keep driving without hesitation during the off-season, we even fitted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/cayenne-winter-tire-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche-approved winter tires<\/a>.<\/strong> In that sense, it\u2019s our Porsche for winter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/F933D1BF-8447-4BC3-981A-C1233BF6CDFD-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"991\u524d\u671f \u30ab\u30ec\u30e94GTS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, we were busy from the end of last year into the new year and didn\u2019t manage any long tours. Here\u2019s a quick look back at a few winter drives, including some time on snowy roads.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Winter_Road_Trip_from_Wakayama_to_Mie\"><\/span>A Winter Road Trip from Wakayama to Mie<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tamaki_Shrine\"><\/span>Tamaki Shrine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>At the end of the year, we found a little time to head to Wakayama.<\/p>\n<p>Our first destination was <a href=\"http:\/\/tamakijinja.or.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tamaki Shrine<\/a>, a famous spiritual power spot. Deep in the Kii Mountains, it\u2019s said to be a shrine \u201conly those who are called can reach,\u201d and is also known as the inner sanctuary of the Kumano Sanzan shrines.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve visited a few times before, but the atmosphere here is so distinctive that I don\u2019t come lightly. This time, I had something on my mind and hoped a visit might give me a little strength.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving Osaka, we drove through Goj\u014d in Nara Prefecture and joined Route 168. There was no snow, but temperatures in late December were low, hovering around 3\u00b0C. One of the advantages of European winter tires is how reassuring they feel, even on dry roads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30876\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/A23EB9FE-D68A-4F1C-A377-E32508FE6537-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u56fd\u9053168\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30873\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/A88F08FF-F266-424E-A9E7-F983A45B3284-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"991\u524d\u671f \u30ab\u30ec\u30e94GTS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Partway along Route 168, we turned left, crossed the Totsukawa River, and climbed a mountain road about one and a half lanes wide. It wasn\u2019t what you\u2019d call extremely narrow, but we had to watch for oncoming traffic in places as the road climbed steeply. As we gained elevation, snow began to appear on the road.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d checked the road conditions in advance and knew there was snow and a winter-tire requirement, so there was no need to panic as we continued uphill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As we got closer to Tamaki Shrine, the snow cover increased rapidly.<\/strong> It had been a while since I\u2019d driven in snow, but the Carrera 4 GTS made remarkably easy work of it. Even in situations where I\u2019d expect a rear-wheel-drive car to struggle for traction, the 4 GTS felt impressively composed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30875\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2FDBE128-5FB3-497B-93D1-6A82863F4424-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u96ea\u9053\u3092\u8d70\u308b\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/C8B62AE8-78CB-432A-A444-C7847FA0A7D4-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u7389\u7f6e\u795e\u793e\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After enjoying the snowy road for a while, we reached the shrine\u2019s parking lot. From there, it\u2019s a 10- to 15-minute walk along a mountain path to the main hall. The atmosphere seemed to change as we got closer. <strong>On previous visits, the air had felt taut and almost prickly. This time, by contrast, it was remarkably gentle.<\/strong> Despite the cold, there was a warmth to the place that left me feeling completely at ease.<\/p>\n<p>After paying our respects, we headed back down the mountain and rejoined Route 168, continuing south.<\/p>\n<p>With little traffic, Route 168 made for a relaxed drive, and we eventually arrived in Shing\u016b, where we spent the night.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_Onigajo_Toward_Mie\"><\/span>From Onigaj\u014d Toward Mie<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The next morning, we enjoyed a brisk run along Prefectural Route 141, also known as the Orange Road. Even at year-end, the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula is pleasantly warm. We drove through the springlike sunshine in Sport mode.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped at Onigaj\u014d, a spot a friend had recommended. <strong>We arrived knowing almost nothing about it, but were blown away by the dramatic natural scenery.<\/strong> If you\u2019re ever in the area, it\u2019s well worth a visit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30877\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/F67D49B4-A3AC-478E-9C11-1882B63171E2-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u30aa\u30ec\u30f3\u30b8\u30ed\u30fc\u30c9\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30864\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/12F4345C-2A0B-4A0F-B2DC-81C4F2CAC90D-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u9b3c\u30f6\u57ce\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30880\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0A4297C5-F714-446E-8895-F42E00FDD318-960x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"\u9b3c\u30f6\u57ce\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30867\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/D4ECE75F-8D00-4D4D-B88C-3CB960D89A2D-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u9b3c\u30f6\u57ce\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Leaving Onigaj\u014d behind, we headed north on Route 169. It\u2019s become much easier to drive than it used to be. This is a proper touring road, and if you\u2019re driving north to south through the Kii Peninsula, Route 169 and Route 168 make excellent starting points for planning your route.<\/p>\n<p>Near Yoshino, we turned right onto the celebrated Route 166 and pointed the 911 toward the next stretch of road. It had been a while since I\u2019d driven this route, but it remains one of my favorite national roads. Coming just after a year-end cold snap, traffic was light, and patches of snow still lingered near the mountain pass.<\/p>\n<p>In Sport mode, I powered uphill, working the paddles and making plenty of completely unnecessary downshifts just to enjoy the sound. We continued to Matsusaka and spent the night there.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, I\u2019d thought about heading toward Shiga, but an unexpected commitment came up, bringing our year-end tour to an early close.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/84BD51CC-281F-425B-95BC-85DA72C58449-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u56fd\u9053166\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Snowy_Mountain_Drive\"><\/span>A Snowy Mountain Drive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We ended the year feeling frustrated that we hadn\u2019t completed the tour. Just as I was thinking about heading out for another drive, the news warned that a major cold snap was on the way.<\/p>\n<p>In Kansai, snow began falling in the evening, even on the plains. <strong>I checked the live camera on Royu Driveway and saw a blanket of snow. This could be good! <\/strong>(laughs) The next morning, I got up early and took the 911 out before the snow could be cleared.<\/p>\n<p>By the following day, the snow had stopped, leaving ideal conditions. It\u2019s rare to see Royu Driveway completely white, with the center line and everything else hidden beneath the snow.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/4D4DE717-9A92-4189-8F4C-82CDD40443B2-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u96ea\u306e\u82a6\u6709\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d6\u30a6\u30a7\u30a4\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/99213535-F767-48CA-A9FF-10063CD2DFAD-853x1280.jpeg\" alt=\"\u96ea\u306e\u82a6\u6709\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d6\u30a6\u30a7\u30a4\" width=\"853\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This time, I took it slow and paid close attention to how the Carrera 4 GTS behaved.<\/p>\n<p>Once snow clearing gets underway, you often end up with a patchwork of snow-covered and bare pavement, along with more ice. The uneven grip from side to side can actually make the road trickier to drive. Before the plows had been through, though, the road was surprisingly easy to handle.<\/p>\n<p>Pressing deeply on the accelerator in second gear, the car powered uphill with fierce all-wheel-drive traction, throwing up a plume of snow. <strong>The braking performance was excellent, too.<\/strong> Approaching a corner, I downshifted and carefully shifted the car\u2019s weight. At the exit, I pointed the car where I wanted it to go, got back on the throttle, and accelerated away in a straight line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In general, the 911 handles snow without any real issues on flat ground or uphill.<\/strong> I tried different approaches through all kinds of corners, but in normal driving, the car felt stable and never gave me cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3860D54A-67A8-4F25-A304-9657B5376F16-1280x720.jpeg\" alt=\"\u96ea\u306e\u82a6\u6709\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d6\u30a6\u30a7\u30a4\u3068\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Downhill corners, on the other hand, call for extra caution.<\/strong> Even in the Carrera 4 GTS, the rear-engine layout can make itself felt. For example, on a steep downhill bend, if you brake a little too late and carry the brakes into the turn, the 911 can start to swing its tail out surprisingly easily.<\/p>\n<p>PSM will step in to help, so unless you\u2019re carrying far too much speed, it\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll simply lose control. Still, <strong>the rear can step out more than expected for a moment, bringing on a flash of oversteer and a real \u201cwhoa\u201d moment.<\/strong> In situations like this, it\u2019s best to brake firmly while the car is still straight, reduce your speed, and then enter the corner carefully.<\/p>\n<p>After that, I continued along the snow-packed mountain road, taking my time and savoring every turn. Snow driving can be dangerous, but it\u2019s also an excellent way to learn how a car performs and behaves. <strong>It\u2019s important to know your 911 inside and out so you can respond safely in any situation, especially when the unexpected happens.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People say you can\u2019t really understand a 911 until you\u2019ve owned one for at least five years.
