Hello everyone! This is Mina, the blog manager of \u201cWelcome Home, PORSCHE.\u201d Since May, we\u2019ve been running an interview series called \u201cPorsche Supporters File,\u201d featuring the people who quietly support Porsche. For the third installment, I spoke with Koichi Nakagawa, president of Nakabayashi Kogyo Co., Ltd.<\/a>, a long-established manufacturer of automotive body covers based in Tondabayashi City, Osaka Prefecture.<\/p>\n

Chapter 1. Nakabayashi Kogyo and Automotive Body Covers<\/h3>\n

1-1: About Nakabayashi Kogyo<\/h4>\n

What kind of company is Nakabayashi Kogyo?<\/h5>\n

We are a manufacturer specializing in sewing automotive covers. Even for the same car model, the shape varies slightly depending on the grade, specifications, and year, so we measure patterns for each type and sew each cover by hand. Currently, we hold about 3,000 pattern templates for both domestic and foreign cars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Orders for domestic and foreign car covers are roughly split 50\/50, but the most common are Nissan GT-R models, which make up about 25% of our total orders. Meanwhile, Porsche orders account for about 5%. Interestingly, many orders come from owners of older models like the 930 and 964 rather than current models.<\/strong>
\nThis year marks our 47th year in business, and thanks to our customers, we now receive orders from all over Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa.<\/p>\n

A simple question: Mr. Nakagawa, why is the company called Nakabayashi Kogyo when your name is Nakagawa?<\/h5>\n

That\u2019s a question I get often (laughs). Actually, my father, Nakagawa, co-founded the company with a partner named Hayashi. The company name \u201cNakabayashi\u201d comes from combining \u201cNaka\u201d from Nakagawa and \u201cHayashi\u201d from his partner\u2019s name.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My father originally worked in a sewing processing company, but about 50 years ago, when automotive covers first appeared on the market, he had a strong feeling that “cars would continue to sell rapidly, so automotive covers would surely become popular too.”<\/strong> Leveraging the sewing know-how and skills he had developed, he started the company specializing in automotive body covers.<\/p>\n

Were car body covers unheard of 50 years ago?<\/h5>\n

Yes, that\u2019s right. Before then, the idea of putting a cover on a car didn\u2019t really exist. However, Japan has a long-standing culture of wrapping precious items with furoshiki cloth, so the concept of a cover \u201cwrapping your beloved car\u201d was probably easy to accept.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For example, cases and accessories for smartphones have countless varieties in Japan, making it the most developed market in the world, and that too is a legacy of the furoshiki culture.
\nOn the other hand, overseas, the idea of covering cars is not common, and it\u2019s usual to just leave cars outside even if they get dirty or scratched.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1-2: Why Make Custom-Made Covers?<\/h4>\n
Did you originally make custom-made automotive covers?<\/h5>\n

No, when we started, we made universal body covers. That\u2019s because about 50 years ago, most cars on the market had boxy designs, and sizes and shapes were almost the same regardless of manufacturer. However, from about 20 to 30 years ago, more uniquely designed cars appeared, shapes diversified, and universal covers no longer fit well.<\/p>\n

About seven years ago, when I became president, we made a major shift to become a fully custom-made automotive body cover manufacturer, believing that \u201cto satisfy customers, we must create covers from dedicated patterns tailored to each individual car.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Some manufacturers still make universal designs, but to differentiate ourselves and provide real value to customers, we believe it\u2019s necessary to painstakingly produce covers one by one, even if it takes more effort.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So you started measuring each car individually about seven years ago?<\/h5>\n

Yes. At first, domestic dealers would come to buy covers, so we visited them to measure cars and brought samples back and forth, making covers one at a time.<\/p>\n

However, due to their customer service schedules, it was often hard to coordinate measuring and production. We thought about how to make measuring and sample creation smoother, and eventually arrived at the current method of having customers bring their cars to us.<\/strong> Gradually, more and more cars were brought in, and now we hold about 3,000 pattern templates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 2. Passion for Making Body Covers<\/h3>\n

2-1: The Passion Behind Body Covers<\/h4>\n

What do you prioritize when making body covers?<\/h5>\n

We focus on whether customers can \u201ctruly feel the benefits that a body cover provides.\u201d<\/strong> There are three main points we pay special attention to.<\/p>\n

First is \u201cfunctionality.\u201d<\/strong> We prioritize protecting the car and preventing damage over just making the cover look cool. For example, regarding the door mirror area: many cars now automatically fold their mirrors when locked, but even if the mirror is not folded when putting on or removing the cover, the design ensures no stress is placed on the mirror.<\/strong>
\nSometimes customers ask for a tighter fit around the mirrors, but that could damage the car, so we explain and ask for their understanding.<\/p>\n

Second is \u201cnot printing the Nakabayashi Kogyo name or logo on the cover.\u201d<\/strong> Printing logos can cause unevenness, and under the hot summer sun, the logo area concentrates sunlight, which can damage the car\u2019s body. So we absolutely never print logos. Though from a business perspective, having our logo would promote the company (laughs).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Third is \u201cbalance.\u201d The cover must not stress the car, have as few seams as possible, keep rain out, and be easy to put on and take off. It\u2019s meaningless if one aspect is excellent but another is poor,<\/strong> so we weigh various functions and continuously improve to achieve the best possible balance.<\/p>\n

You pay attention even to the sewing seams?!<\/h5>\n

Yes. Adding more parts to fit the car shape better increases seams, which can let rainwater in and reduce durability. So minimizing seams is very important.<\/strong>
\nFor example, the door mirror pouch is sewn tightly with a single needle to keep water out, while the hem is sewn a bit more loosely because it\u2019s pulled tight at the end. We vary the stitching depending on the part.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We also design the fabric to minimize seams, using only up to four types of parts: the roof fabric, side fabric, gussets inserted between them, and excluding protrusions like side under mirrors.<\/p>\n

Wow… is this dedication something you inherited from your father?<\/h5>\n

Yes, I think I was greatly influenced by him. He often said, \u201cIn business, what matters is making good products that satisfy customers. If you trick customers for your own convenience, they\u2019ll never buy from you again.\u201d<\/strong>
\nI\u2019m happy to receive many orders, but I always keep in mind that \u201cselling once is not the end.\u201d Only when customers feel \u201cI\u2019m glad I bought this\u201d does it lead to the next order. We put our heart into making each cover.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2-2: Turning Passion into Reality<\/h4>\n
How do you share this passion with the craftsmen on site?<\/h5>\n

We talk about these things regularly, so I think they understand to some extent. I also tell them, \u201cIf you were the customer, would you pay this price? Let\u2019s make something you\u2019d be satisfied to buy.\u201d<\/strong>
\nIf you imagine paying that price yourself, you can\u2019t be careless.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean working slowly, though. Sewing must be done at a certain speed to avoid puckering or tension issues.<\/strong> But if it\u2019s too fast and the stitching is off by even 1 cm, sometimes the whole piece must be redone.
\nIt\u2019s a world where speed and accuracy are both essential, requiring skilled craftsmanship. I used to help with sewing myself, but I ended up being more of a hindrance (laughs), so now I focus on measuring patterns.<\/p>\n

Are there manufacturers whose cars are hard to measure?<\/h5>\n

Yes… Recently, we measured a Lamborghini Hurac\u00e1n, which was very challenging. The pointed front makes it difficult to make a cover without wrinkles or tension if using typical cover-making methods. Custom modifications make it even harder. But to meet the wishes of owners who cherish their cars, we keep innovating and measuring carefully every day.<\/p>\n

What kind of feedback do you get from customers about these careful covers?<\/h5>\n

Lately, many say \u201cWhen selling the car, it fetches a surprisingly high price.\u201d<\/strong> Because the interior and exterior remain in excellent condition, the car looks very clean for its mileage. Parts like the windshield, wiper rubber, and headlights deteriorate quickly if left in the rain, but the cover greatly reduces this damage.<\/p>\n

Body covers not only prevent dirt and reduce washing frequency, but also offer long-term benefits. So we often hear customers say, \u201cConsidering the higher resale value, it\u2019s a very worthwhile item!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 3. Mr. Nakagawa\u2019s View on Porsche<\/h3>\n

3-1: Mr. Nakagawa\u2019s Surprising Side<\/h4>\n

Are you originally a car enthusiast, Mr. Nakagawa?<\/h5>\n

No, not really (laughs). Customers who visit our website often say, \u201cYou must drive a modified car,\u201d or \u201cYou probably go to the circuit every weekend,\u201d but although I have a driver\u2019s license, I\u2019m basically a non-driver and have never owned a car in my life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Honestly, I\u2019m not that interested in cars themselves, and I apologize for that… But I do understand the feelings of owners who want to keep their precious possessions clean.
\nNow, I measure cars brought in about every other day, and rather than just admiring cool cars, I get satisfaction from making samples, covering the car, and seeing it beautifully wrapped and hidden under the cover, thinking \u201cThis is really great!\u201d<\/strong> (laughs).<\/p>\n

Have you always been interested in making body covers?<\/h5>\n

Yes. Since childhood, body covers have always been around me, so I felt a deep connection to them in my life.
\nBut as a child, I wondered \u201cWhy do adults bother putting these flashy, ugly sheets on cars?\u201d<\/strong> (laughs) Over time, I learned that body covers play an important role in protecting cars and preventing deterioration,<\/strong> and I became interested in their depth.<\/p>\n

Currently, our covers are silver, but sometimes customers ask for red or black covers. However, we only offer this one silver color.<\/strong> Red or black may look cool, but red and blue are said to attract bird droppings, and black absorbs sunlight, which stresses the car. After research, we settled on the current pearl-grayish blue silver color as the best to minimize risks.<\/p>\n

We even considered patterns like cherry blossom petals or camouflage, but they were rejected because they would stress the car and reduce functionality (laughs).<\/p>\n

3-2: About Porsche<\/h4>\n
What is your impression of Porsche, having seen many cars?<\/h5>\n

I think the design is extremely refined.<\/strong> The aerodynamics, such as air resistance and airflow, have been thoroughly studied to create beautiful designs. Also, they don\u2019t try too hard to look flashy but maintain a simple, elegant design,<\/strong> which is great. And yet, they have an unmistakable presence that immediately says \u201cPorsche.\u201d
\nWhen making body covers, Porsche\u2019s simple and refined design makes pattern creation quick and easy.<\/strong> Cars with overly stylized designs can cause tension or fabric shortages, but Porsche\u2019s balanced design allows the pattern to fit perfectly.
\nThis applies to all Porsche models, whether Cayenne or 911.<\/h5>\n

3-3: Future Outlook<\/h4>\n
It\u2019s amazing how passionate you are about body covers…<\/h5>\n

I wonder if that\u2019s true… (laughs) Thank you. The efforts I mentioned are normal for us, but when interviewed, people are often surprised and ask, \u201cDo you really consider things to the extent of using different sewing machines?\u201d<\/strong>
\nThat surprises me too, and makes me realize \u201cWhat we thought was normal is actually quite amazing.\u201d<\/strong> (laughs)<\/p>\n

\nRecently, someone told me, \u201cBecause you used a body cover, my car wasn\u2019t wet at all even during the heavy rain last weekend! You should promote that more!\u201d I\u2019m happy to hear that, but considering seams and breathability, I can\u2019t say \u201c100% rainproof,\u201d so I prefer not to overstate it<\/strong> (laughs). I want to continue humbly and steadily.<\/p>\n

What are your future plans?<\/h5>\n

I want to put more effort into our website. Since most orders come online, I want to make the site easier to navigate and understand, add videos explaining how to order, and keep improving.
\nBut I don\u2019t have very specific visions or goals for the future. More than that, I prioritize delivering covers that satisfy each and every customer who orders.<\/strong> I believe that by focusing on that steadily, new opportunities will come naturally when the time is right.
\nI want to keep putting my soul into making body covers and keep doing my best.<\/p>\n
