My Husband Shares His Test-Drive Impressions<\/h3>\n

The other day, my husband came home after driving my brother-in-law\u2019s new Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo. We took the cars to the Royu Driveway for a back-to-back comparison: the Panamera Turbo vs. the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo. You can read about that test drive here.<\/p>\n

At the time, my husband said, \u201cI\u2019ll put together some thoughts on the differences between the Panamera and the Panamera Sport Turismo, too.\u201d<\/strong> It sounds like he\u2019s finally got his thoughts in order (laughs), so this time I\u2019ll share what he told me about the key points from our comparison.<\/p>\n

How Their Driving-Related Options Differ<\/h3>\n

My husband started with, \u201cFirst, I should explain how the driving-related options differ between the Panamera and Panamera Sport Turismo we tested.\u201d<\/strong> Er, sure\u2026 (-_-;). Here\u2019s the breakdown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the setup. With those differences in mind, here are my husband\u2019s four takeaways from the test drive, followed by his overall verdict.<\/p>\n

\u2460 Agility<\/h3>\n

The first thing my husband mentioned was this: \u201cMy first impression was that, with the standard chassis, the Sport Turismo felt more agile\u2014in a good way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

For small maneuvers around town, like changing lanes or overtaking, the Sport Turismo felt more in sync with the driver\u2019s inputs. It reminded me of the Panamera 4S I test-drove at the dealership before.<\/p>\n

I know what he means. I felt that agility, too. It was so light on its feet that I actually asked, \u201cWait, is the Panamera Sport Turismo a lot lighter than the Panamera?\u201d<\/strong> My husband went on:<\/p>\n

The Panamera feels a little smoother and more relaxed, while the Sport Turismo feels slightly lighter off the line, with a touch more nimbleness in its handling. Of course, they both share the same fundamental Panamera ride and character. I\u2019d say it\u2019s more a matter of one having a slightly stronger or subtler version of that character.<\/p>\n

That makes sense. For reference, my husband says that, among the Panameras he\u2019s driven, they rank from least to most substantial in feel like this:<\/p>\n

Panamera 4S < 970 Panamera Edition < Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo < Panamera Turbo<\/p>\n

I can see that. The Panamera Turbo feels more substantial than any of the other Panameras I\u2019ve driven.<\/p>\n

\u2461 Suspension Firmness<\/h3>\n

Next, my husband pointed out that \u201cthere isn\u2019t much difference in ride comfort on regular roads, but the Sport Turismo lets you feel more of the roughness on coarse surfaces.\u201d<\/strong> Now that he mentions it, I think he\u2019s right. The difference wasn\u2019t obvious most of the time, but bumps and rough patches did seem to come through differently. I asked him why that might be, and he said:<\/p>\n

This is just a guess, but the Sport Turismo may have a slightly firmer suspension setup because it\u2019s designed with carrying a lot of luggage in mind. Interestingly, the recommended tire pressures in the owner\u2019s manual are slightly different for the Panamera and Panamera Sport Turismo. Comparing the \u2018standard pressure\u2019 figures for the 21-inch summer tires, the Panamera Turbo is listed at F 3.1 bar\/R 2.8 bar, while the Sport Turismo is F 2.8 bar\/R 2.7 bar. Since the Sport Turismo\u2019s pressures are a little lower, I suspect the suspension settings may also differ slightly.<\/p>\n

Okay\u2026 I\u2019ll admit, some of that went over my head, but I got the general idea (laughs). He continued:<\/p>\n

They both have air suspension, but I think it\u2019s fair to say that the Sport Turismo rides more like a car with conventional steel springs.<\/strong> It reminds me of the 970 Panamera Edition I used to own, which had steel springs. Personally, I might prefer the Sport Turismo\u2019s ride.<\/p>\n

He also said, \u201cWhat\u2019s interesting is that, based on this alone, you might expect the Sport Turismo to feel more luxurious, but in reality, it feels the other way around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n

\u2462 Engine Sound With and Without the Sport Exhaust<\/h3>\n

A lot of people wonder whether the Sport Exhaust is worth adding. My husband\u2019s take was clear: \u201cThe sound is completely different in both tone and volume. I\u2019d absolutely get it.\u201d<\/strong> Here\u2019s how the cars with and without the Sport Exhaust (standard exhaust) compare across three situations.<\/p>\n

1) Starting the Engine<\/h4>\n

The standard exhaust and the Sport Exhaust with the system switched off sound almost identical when starting the engine. Both wake up with the kind of assertive bark you\u2019d expect from a Porsche.<\/strong> There may be a subtle difference in tone, but it\u2019s hard to describe\u2014and easy to miss.<\/p>\n

2) Sound While Driving<\/h4>\n

With the Sport Exhaust switched on, the car takes on a deep, rumbling V8 note, and you can clearly hear the exhaust pops as the PDK shifts gears.<\/strong> Without it, the standard exhaust gives you a hint of the V8 at higher revs, but there\u2019s much less of that V8 character at low revs. To our ears, the Sport Exhaust sounds about 1.3 to 1.5 times louder than the standard exhaust.<\/p>\n

3) Sound in Sport and Sport Plus Modes<\/h4>\n

On a car equipped with the Sport Exhaust, the change in sound is easy to hear when you switch to Sport or Sport Plus. With the standard exhaust, though, the difference is barely noticeable\u2014even in Sport or Sport Plus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, to sum up:<\/p>\n

One major advantage of the Sport Exhaust is that it makes the selected driving mode unmistakable to the driver.<\/strong> That said, even the standard exhaust is quite loud compared with an ordinary sedan. If you don\u2019t want a louder exhaust or aren\u2019t a fan of the V8\u2019s rhythmic rumble, the standard exhaust should be more than enough.<\/p>\n

\u2463 Rear-Axle Steering<\/h3>\n

On the difference between having rear-axle steering and not having it, my husband said:<\/p>\n

Around town, I couldn\u2019t tell the difference except when making a U-turn. I didn\u2019t notice anything during slow turns at intersections, overtaking, or passing other cars.<\/p>\n

That sounds right. I don\u2019t even make U-turns around town, so I hardly ever notice a difference in everyday driving. (If I can\u2019t make a U-turn, I tend to panic, so I avoid roads where I might need to make one.)<\/span> What about on the highway?<\/p>\n

I covered about 80 km, concentrating as hard as I could on spotting differences in lane changes and high-speed stability, but I couldn\u2019t feel any difference.<\/strong> Maybe it would show up on a racetrack or with more aggressive driving, but I couldn\u2019t tell on the highway during normal lane changes or fast corners. The Panamera has such a capable chassis to begin with that the difference is probably even harder to notice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, while rear-axle steering made no noticeable difference around town or on the highway, the contrast became clear on the tight, winding roads we often drive in the Panamera, such as the Royu Driveway.<\/p>\n

In the standard chassis setting, the difference isn\u2019t that obvious, but it becomes clear in Sport and Sport Plus. You don\u2019t feel much difference in how the front end turns in, but the rear follows noticeably differently.<\/strong> With rear-axle steering, the rear seems to swing around through the corner and follow the front without a pause. Without it, the rear feels like it follows just a fraction later.<\/p>\n

He said the difference also shows up in body roll. The tighter the corner, the less body roll he felt with rear-axle steering\u2014and he believes there really is less. He also found that the car feels smaller and more nimble on mountain roads<\/strong> with rear-axle steering.<\/p>\n

Of course, these are subjective impressions. If we use the Panamera without rear-axle steering in the standard chassis setting as our baseline of 1, here\u2019s how my husband would rate the cars on tight, winding mountain roads. (For brevity, the table uses \u201cRS\u201d for rear-axle steering.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Driving a Panamera with rear-axle steering in Sport Plus mode, my husband was once again amazed that a car over five meters long and weighing two tonnes could feel so agile.<\/strong> His overall take was:<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re mainly using the Panamera as a comfortable sedan for family or passengers, or don\u2019t plan to push it on winding roads, I don\u2019t think rear-axle steering is necessary. But if you want to enjoy winding roads in your Panamera, or make U-turns and parking in tight spaces easier, it\u2019s an option worth having.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I agree. It\u2019s incredibly easy to park, and without rear-axle steering, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d have the confidence to park a Panamera myself (laughs).<\/p>\n

Our Test-Drive Comparison Verdict<\/h3>\n

So, what was my husband\u2019s overall verdict on the Panamera vs. Panamera Sport Turismo?<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve gone into the differences in quite a bit of detail, but please take this as a comparison between these two particular cars. As with any Porsche, ride and handling can vary slightly with tire pressure and differences between individual cars. Even so, it was clear that the Panamera and Sport Turismo have subtly different tuning and driving characters.<\/p>\n

Both the Panamera and Panamera Sport Turismo have the firm, sporty suspension you\u2019d expect from a sports car. They share the unmistakable Porsche driving character, exceptionally high-speed stability, and cornering ability that defies their size. So whether you buy a Panamera or a Sport Turismo, you can count on world-class performance and the unmistakable appeal of a Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

More important than the differences between the two is what you expect from the Panamera itself. Compared with a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or an AMG S 63, the Panamera is built with a very different purpose in mind. If you buy one expecting an ultra-luxury sedan costing more than \u00a525 million, you may find that it doesn\u2019t quite match your expectations.
\nIf you\u2019re buying a Panamera Turbo, you should think of it as \u201ca 911 Turbo or GT3 transformed into a four- or five-seat car, with a substantial boost in luxury.\u201d<\/strong> With that mindset, it should live up to your expectations. As long as you\u2019re looking for the right things, I don\u2019t think you\u2019ll regret buying a Panamera.<\/p>\n

That was his conclusion. Wow\u2026 after hearing all that, my own test-drive comparison from the other day suddenly felt pretty superficial (-_-). (But it seems a shame to delete it\u2026)<\/span> So, before you decide between buying a Panamera and a Panamera Sport Turismo, it\u2019s important to start by asking:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do I want from a luxury sedan?\u201d<\/span>
