The first thing my husband mentioned was \u201cMy initial impression was that when choosing the standard chassis, the Sport Turismo felt more agile in a good way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

For example, during lane changes or overtaking in town, the Sport Turismo felt more in tune with the driver\u2019s intentions. It reminded me of the handling of the Panamera 4S I test drove at the dealer before.<\/p>\n

Yes, I definitely felt that agility when I drove it too. I even asked, \u201cHey, is the Panamera Sport Turismo significantly lighter than the Panamera?\u201d<\/strong> because it felt so light and nimble. My husband continued,<\/p>\n

The Panamera feels a bit smoother and more relaxed, but the Sport Turismo feels lighter right from the start, with slightly sharper handling. Of course, the ride quality and feel are common to both, just with a slightly stronger or lighter tuning difference.<\/p>\n

I see… By the way, based on the heaviness of the ride my husband has experienced in various Panameras, the order from lightest to heaviest feels like this:<\/p>\n

Panamera 4S < 970 Panamera Edition < Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo < Panamera Turbo<\/p>\n

Indeed, the Panamera Turbo is the heaviest-feeling model among the Panameras.<\/p>\n

\u2461 Suspension Firmness<\/h3>\n

Next, my husband said \u201cThere\u2019s not much difference in ride comfort on normal roads, but on rough surfaces, the Sport Turismo feels a bit more jarring.\u201d<\/strong> Now that he mentions it, I do recall that feeling. Usually, the difference wasn\u2019t noticeable, but on rough roads, the way the impact was felt seemed different. When I asked why that might be,<\/p>\n

I imagine it\u2019s because the Sport Turismo is designed to carry heavier loads, so its suspension is set a bit firmer. Also, if you check the recommended tire pressures in the manual, they differ slightly between the Panamera and Sport Turismo. Comparing the \u201cstandard pressure\u201d for 21-inch summer tires, the Panamera Turbo is F3.1bar\/R2.8bar, while the Sport Turismo is F2.8bar\/R2.7bar, so the suspension settings are probably subtly different.<\/p>\n

Oh… I got a bit lost halfway since I\u2019m no expert, but I think I got the gist (laughs). Continuing on suspension,<\/p>\n

Both have air suspension, but the Sport Turismo feels more like a traditional coil spring suspension.<\/strong> It\u2019s similar to the 970 Panamera Edition I used to drive, which had coil springs. Personally, I might prefer the Sport Turismo\u2019s ride.<\/p>\n

\u2462 Engine Sound With or Without Sports Exhaust<\/h3>\n

Many people probably wonder whether to get the sports exhaust, and my husband said, \u201cThe sound quality and volume are completely different, so I\u2019d definitely get it.\u201d<\/strong> So, here\u2019s a comparison between the sports exhaust-equipped car and the non-equipped (normal exhaust) car, broken down into three points.<\/p>\n

1) Sound When Starting the Engine<\/h4>\n

With the normal exhaust and sports exhaust OFF, the engine start sound volume and tone are almost the same, both waking up with that bold Porsche roar.<\/strong> There might be subtle tonal differences, but they\u2019re so slight it\u2019s hard to describe, so you can say there\u2019s not much difference.<\/p>\n

2) Sound While Driving<\/h4>\n

With the sports exhaust equipped, turning it ON produces a deep, throaty V8 rumble, and you can clearly hear backfires when the PDK shifts.<\/strong> On the other hand, the non-equipped (normal exhaust) car only shows a bit of V8 character at high revs, and at low revs, it doesn\u2019t feel very V8-like. The sports exhaust feels about 1.3 to 1.5 times louder than the normal exhaust.<\/p>\n

3) Sound in Sport and Sport Plus Modes<\/h4>\n

With the sports exhaust, switching to Sport or Sport Plus makes the sound difference very clear. However, with the non-equipped (normal exhaust) car, there\u2019s hardly any noticeable difference even in Sport or Sport Plus modes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, to summarize,<\/p>\n

One big advantage of the sports exhaust is that it clearly communicates to the driver when the mode has changed.<\/strong> But compared to a regular sedan, even the normal exhaust is quite loud, so if you don\u2019t want a loud sound or don\u2019t like the V8\u2019s throaty beat, the normal exhaust is sufficient.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what he said.<\/p>\n

\u2463 Rear Axle Steering<\/h3>\n

Next, regarding whether the car has rear axle steering or not, my husband said,<\/p>\n

In town, except for U-turns, you can\u2019t really tell the difference. Even slow turns at intersections or during overtaking, I couldn\u2019t find any difference.<\/p>\n

True, I rarely even do U-turns in town, so I wouldn\u2019t notice the difference either. (I avoid roads where I can\u2019t U-turn because I\u2019d panic.)<\/span> So how about on the highway?<\/p>\n

I focused all my attention on lane changes and high-speed stability over about 80 km, but I couldn\u2019t feel any difference.<\/strong> Maybe on a racetrack or with more aggressive driving you\u2019d notice, but on the highway within normal driving limits, I didn\u2019t. Probably because the Panamera already has excellent chassis performance, making differences harder to detect.<\/strong><\/p>\n

While no difference was felt in town or on the highway, moving to the Royu Driveway, a winding road with tight corners where we usually drive the Panamera, the difference became very clear.<\/p>\n

With the standard chassis, the difference isn\u2019t obvious, but in Sport or Sport Plus modes, it\u2019s clear. The front doesn\u2019t feel much different in turn-in, but the rear\u2019s responsiveness is noticeably better.<\/strong> With rear axle steering, the rear seems to follow the curve instantly, almost wrapping around, but without it, the rear feels slightly delayed.<\/p>\n

This also shows in the roll feel: the tighter the corner, the less roll you feel with rear axle steering, and my husband said it really does feel smaller. Also, the feeling that the car is smaller and more agile on mountain roads is stronger with rear axle steering.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s subjective, if we set the standard chassis without rear axle steering as 1, here\u2019s how he rated the feeling on winding mountain roads. (We abbreviate rear axle steering as RS in the table.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

My husband was amazed again that driving a Panamera with rear axle steering in Sport Plus mode feels like a nimble car, not a 2-ton, 5-meter-long vehicle. Overall,<\/p>\n

If you mainly use your Panamera as a comfortable sedan for guests or family and don\u2019t drive aggressively on winding roads, you probably don\u2019t need the rear axle steering option. But if you want to enjoy winding roads and make U-turns or parking easier on narrow streets, it\u2019s definitely worth having.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He said. Indeed, parking is super easy with rear axle steering, and without it, I\u2019m not confident I could park the Panamera (laughs).<\/p>\n

Overall Evaluation of the Test Drive Comparison<\/h3>\n

So, here\u2019s my husband\u2019s overall evaluation of the Panamera vs. Panamera Sport Turismo test drive comparison:<\/p>\n

We looked at the differences in detail this time, but please take this as a comparative discussion only. As with other Porsche models, small differences in tire pressure or individual cars can change the ride feel, but even setting that aside, it\u2019s clear there are some tuning differences between the Panamera and Sport Turismo.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both the Panamera and Panamera Sport Turismo have sporty, solid suspensions, maintaining Porsche\u2019s characteristic ride feel, with incredibly high-speed stability and cornering performance beyond their size. So, whether you buy a Panamera or a Sport Turismo, you\u2019re guaranteed world-class driving performance and Porsche\u2019s charm.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What\u2019s more important is what you expect from the Panamera itself. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or AMG S63, it\u2019s a completely different kind of car, so if you buy it thinking it\u2019s a 25 million yen-plus ultra-luxury sedan, you might feel a mismatch with your expectations. When buying a Panamera Turbo, you should be prepared to \u201cbuy a 4- or 5-seat version of the 911 Turbo or GT3 with significantly enhanced luxury.\u201d<\/strong> If you keep that mindset, it will meet your expectations well. As long as your expectations are aligned, you won\u2019t regret buying a Panamera.<\/p>\n
