Its larger body and drastically changed design from the previous generation divided opinions, but I really liked it. I especially admired the rear styling, the taillight design, and the enveloping driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30677\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30677\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/535AF4EC-943E-4ACE-87D1-C050CA4A9477-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"80\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u306e\u30ab\u30bf\u30ed\u30b0\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A catalog of the \u201980s Supra from back then. When I first saw the design in the announcement, I was disappointed, and I was surprised that although it was a joint development with BMW, it shared a platform with the Z4 and was actually built by BMW.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I had the opportunity to test drive that Supra. The <strong>grade was the limited edition RZ \u201cMatte White Edition,\u201d limited to just 50 units.<\/strong> The transmission is a newly introduced manual transmission (MT), <strong>which the original BMW Z4 does not have.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_Started\"><\/span>Getting Started<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Let me be clear from the start: I had zero expectations for this Supra.<\/p>\n<p>Even though it\u2019s BMW-made, I imagined a Toyota-influenced sports car that might feel somewhat unreliable in terms of driving. The original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/bmw-z4-m40i-testdrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Z4<\/a> is a great car, but <strong>it\u2019s a bit too luxurious for the kind of sports car I\u2019m looking for.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also, most reviews by critics of the new Supra were lukewarm, so I imagined it might be a somewhat mediocre car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/47832576-63C3-4FFC-8AE3-EDCFCD9E7D56-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u306e\u904b\u8ee2\u5e2d\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, the moment I sat in the driver\u2019s seat, started the engine, engaged the clutch, and began driving, I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it was <strong>one of those \u201ccars where you can tell the difference in 2 seconds,\u201d as my wife and I often say on this blog.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the initial rolling feel of the tires, the low friction in the range of motion, and the smoothness of the drivetrain parts, you can tell the manufacturing precision is very high. The tire contact feel and suppression of subtle vibrations are also excellent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30693\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/4332CA10-2503-4E7D-BA8E-90DB6B25008F-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u306e\u30de\u30cb\u30e5\u30a2\u30eb\u30c8\u30e9\u30f3\u30b9\u30df\u30c3\u30b7\u30e7\u30f3\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thinking, \u201cThis might be promising,\u201d I left the parking lot and accelerated through 2nd and 3rd gears.<\/p>\n<p>The feeling of the newly developed 6-speed manual transmission, <strong>said to be developed under Toyota\u2019s leadership, is exceptionally good.<\/strong> The operation feels a bit firm and requires some force, but the engagement is precise and very satisfying. The clutch is very light, and it automatically raises the revs slightly when starting in 1st gear, making it easy even for manual beginners.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <strong>being a recent MT, it features auto-blip, allowing very easy and sporty operation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wonderful_Suspension\"><\/span>Wonderful Suspension<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The ride comfort is excellent even at low speeds. The seats are soft and designed to let you sink in deeply, and this seating comfort is very good. The seat adjustment buttons are the same shape as BMW\u2019s, so I believe these are BMW seats, but the hold is just right, and unnecessary vibrations are well absorbed.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, <strong>the suspension movement is outstanding.<\/strong> It settles any vibration instantly, with virtually no residual shaking. Honestly, this is a level of refinement rarely experienced with stock suspension on Japanese cars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/79A3DD0B-1796-4E78-A4CF-447D02D9C691-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u306e\u8db3\u56de\u308a\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Entering a curve and turning the steering wheel, the response is superb. It reacts vividly from the very start of the steering input, with minimal lag. Later, when parking, I noticed the Supra\u2019s lock-to-lock steering is just under two full turns.<\/p>\n<p>This is on par with cars like the Ferrari 488 GTB and is rare for sports cars in this price range.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, unlike some supercars that simply reduce lock-to-lock to boost response blindly, this Supra\u2019s <strong>response is sharp yet feels natural to the driver.<\/strong> It neither oversteers nor understeers unexpectedly, allowing very confident driving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This tuning is hard to believe for a car priced around 8 million yen.<\/strong> The only comparable cars I can think of in this class are the Cayman and Boxster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/2796ECF1-30F6-4A06-B5E0-A2C2B98A3746-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u3067\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d6\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30685\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30685\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/4A2E70B0-FACF-4E14-9713-49B260AE1D9B-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u306e\u30b7\u30fc\u30c8\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The seating comfort is really good.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This sharp response and the suspension\u2019s road-holding during cornering are truly remarkable. Despite the comfortable ride, there\u2019s no strange body roll, and the car sticks to curves tenaciously, smoothly powering through bends. <strong>This is truly BMW\u2019s \u201cjoy of driving.\u201d<\/strong> Or maybe even more than that.<\/p>\n<p>If I were to compare the suspension feel on light mountain road runs to a Porsche, it\u2019s <strong>closer to the 992 coupe than the 981 or 718 Cayman\/Boxster.<\/strong> To be precise, it doesn\u2019t quite reach the 992\u2019s level, but the ride is comfortable, the steering is sharp, and it holds the road well during cornering. The sensation is very similar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30692\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/863DD78D-C9AD-4D08-9D2F-484102F9A6A6-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u3067\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d6\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the owner, the Supra\u2019s chassis and suspension have been updated through yearly improvements. Upon checking the materials later, I found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AVS control and absorber damping tuning improved roll balance and ride comfort<\/li>\n<li>Stabilizer bush characteristics changed to improve initial steering response<\/li>\n<li>Chassis control systems (AVS, EPS, VSC) revised to enhance steering feel and control at the limit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So it might be quite different from the initial production batch.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine_Feel\"><\/span>Engine Feel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Since the engine was still in break-in, I didn\u2019t test high revs, but the throttle response was sharp enough, and the 387 hp power is ample. <strong>Most notably, it\u2019s a turbo engine that doesn\u2019t feel like a turbo.<\/strong> There\u2019s no sudden surge in torque. If you didn\u2019t know, you might mistake it for a large-displacement naturally aspirated engine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30694\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/DEAE58F8-810B-4029-BBBA-568F26D4833D-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u306e\u30e1\u30fc\u30bf\u30fc\u30d1\u30cd\u30eb\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/414496E5-B7E4-4298-B017-EBD60B74C881-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u306e\u30de\u30d5\u30e9\u30fc\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The torque increases proportionally with engine speed, a hallmark of BMW engines. This is the same feeling I experienced with the 3.0-liter turbo engines in the Z4 and 4 Series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One point of concern is the engine and exhaust sound.<\/strong> It has a somewhat muffled tone. It\u2019s not unpleasant, but given how enjoyable the engine is, I wish it had a clearer sound.<\/p>\n<p>Still, with such excellent suspension and engine feel, you\u2019ll likely forget about that while driving.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overall_Impression\"><\/span>Overall Impression<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>By now, this has become a glowing review, but it\u2019s an honest one with no bias.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, on the day, besides me and the Supra\u2019s owner (a Porsche owner), two other Porsche owners (owners of a 718 Spyder and a 991 GT3 RS) also test drove the Supra, and <strong>both highly praised the suspension, even joking that they wanted one themselves.<\/strong> I, too, find myself wanting to buy this Supra.<\/p>\n<p>Though I\u2019m realistically waiting for delivery of a new Fairlady Z, that\u2019s how much I fell for this car.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30671\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30671\" class=\"wp-image-30671 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/EB7A630F-3692-4980-BF4D-F72EFE65C1A1-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It looks even better in person than in photos. The matte white is truly beautiful.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I think the best use for this car is mainly as a GT car, while also enjoying it on mountain roads and winding routes. For circuit use, the Cayman might be better suited, but its athleticism is more than enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Its comfort level is very high, so it\u2019s perfectly usable as a date car, for daily shopping, or commuting.<\/strong> I think its comfort even surpasses the Cayman\u2019s. By the way, to get similar comfort in a 718 Cayman, PASM is essential. You\u2019d have to compare it to a GTS 4.0 grade to approach this level of comfort.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30673\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/15EBFF91-0388-4BE8-8290-4C995E287E36-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s truly a well-balanced car.<\/strong> Since it\u2019s a Japanese car, many will probably customize it eventually, but personally, I hope people drive it as is without modifications. Don\u2019t change the wheels or even the tire brand. While some performance aspects might improve with customization, this balance will definitely be lost. Such a well-balanced car is rare.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t something any ordinary tuning shop can achieve by piecing together third-party parts. So if possible, I sincerely hope you\u2019ll enjoy it just as it is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/03D794B2-B815-4D42-8388-C57FBD0A1C67-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\u65b0\u578b\u30b9\u30fc\u30d7\u30e9\u306e\u30a8\u30f3\u30d6\u30ec\u30e0\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although it carries the Toyota name, this isn\u2019t the driving feel of any Toyota car I know. But it\u2019s not a pure BMW either. It feels different from the Z4 and the 440i as well.
