The Often-Seen Weissach Package<\/h3>\n

I regularly receive Porsche-related web news via Google Alerts (I usually just skim the titles and read what catches my eye)<\/span>, and back in May, I came across an article on the automotive media site autoblog.<\/p>\n

…There it was. The Weissach Package. The Weissach Package I often see mentioned. Even though it costs around 3 million yen as an option on the GT2 and GT3, many people choose to add this Weissach Package<\/strong>. What exactly is this all about…? So, I decided to do a little digging this time.<\/p>\n

What Is the Weissach Research Center?<\/h3>\n

First of all, the \u201cWeissach\u201d in the Weissach Package comes from Porsche\u2019s research and development heart, the \u201cWeissach Research Center\u201d<\/strong>. Weissach is a town in southeastern Germany, about a 40-minute drive from Stuttgart. The relationship between Porsche headquarters and the Weissach Research Center is said to be similar to that between Honda Motor Co. and the Honda R&D Center in Japan. (By the way, the red mark on the map shows Weissach)<\/span>

The Weissach Research Center was established in 1971. Here, technical design and development of Porsche cars, testing, and design, development, and manufacturing of race cars<\/strong> are carried out. In addition to Porsche\u2019s new models, the center also accepts development and design requests from other companies, functioning as an independent R&D department within the automotive industry.<\/p>\n

The Weissach facility covers 465,000 m\u00b2. Since the Tokyo Dome is about 46,755 m\u00b2, this is roughly the size of 10 Tokyo Domes<\/strong>. Within this area, there are three test tracks: a 2.531 km high-speed course, a 2.879 km winding course, and a dirt course for developing SUVs and rally cars. Nearly all Porsche production cars are tested here.<\/p>\n

You often see \u201crare photos of test cars\u201d or pre-release new car shots in automotive media, but security at the Weissach Research Center is reportedly extremely strict<\/strong>. One site described it like this:<\/p>\n

Entering through the main gate and heading to the research center building, there was a sign with a camera crossed out. I took this as a warning not to take unauthorized photos of cars under development. Since I was just there to make memories, I quickly took out my DSLR, set the self-timer, and was about to take a commemorative photo with the Weissach building in the background when suddenly,

Yikes, scary, I almost got in trouble… It seems even taking photos for memories at the Weissach Research Center is a big no-no.<\/p>\n

Expansion of the Weissach Research Center<\/h3>\n

Although the Weissach Research Center opened in 1971, in 2011 construction began to expand the site and build a state-of-the-art studio and an Electronics Integration Center. The investment amounted to a staggering 150 million euros!!!<\/strong> Amazing… This investment was not only for Porsche\u2019s future, enabling continued development of EV and hybrid technologies through the new Electronics Integration Center, but also demonstrated Porsche\u2019s commitment to contributing to the Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg industrial region.<\/p>\n

Thanks to Porsche, Weissach\u2019s per capita tax revenue was reportedly the highest in Germany as of 2011<\/strong> (I wonder if that\u2019s still the case)<\/span>. This suggests that around this time Porsche was already preparing for the development of the electric Taycan (Mission E). The Taycan finally debuted in 2019, and it\u2019s something to look forward to.

What Is the Weissach Package?<\/h3>\n

The introduction was a bit long, but now that we know the Weissach Research Center is Porsche\u2019s heart, packed with the latest technology and know-how<\/strong>, let\u2019s look into the Weissach Package itself. In short, the Weissach Package\u2019s main feature is \u201cachieving thorough lightweight construction to offer a world as close to motorsport as possible\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Therefore, it\u2019s a package designed not for everyday use or mountain roads, but specifically for driving on the circuit (and seriously at that)<\/span>. Well, the fact that it\u2019s only available on the GT2 RS and GT3 RS models says it all.<\/p>\n

The Weissach Package was first introduced on the 918 Spyder, and the current 911 GT3 RS equipped with it achieves nearly an 18 kg weight reduction<\/strong>. I personally thought, \u201cEh… only 18 kg (-_-)?\u201d but the standard GT3 RS is already stripped down for weight savings \u2014 even the emblems are stickers and the door handles are just cords \u2014 so to further improve performance while reducing weight is quite an achievement.<\/p>\n

Visual Differences?<\/h3>\n

When you opt for the Weissach Package, there are noticeable visual differences. The front lid and roof are finished in carbon fiber reinforced plastic with a carbon weave pattern, and the rear wing features a large \u201cPORSCHE\u201d logo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And despite the focus on weight reduction, there is one thing they deliberately did not lighten: the headrests bear the Weissach Package logo<\/strong>. Displaying this logo proudly expresses the pride owners have in this package. Incidentally, it was also showcased recently at the Goodwood Festival.<\/p>\n

\nThe retail price of the GT2 RS in Japan, including tax, is 36.56 million yen. Despite the Weissach Package option costing between 2.657 million and 3.241 million yen, the installation rate on the 911 GT2 RS reportedly exceeds 90%.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Next for the Weissach Package?<\/h3>\n

The autoblog article introduced at the beginning states that Andreas Preuninger, head of Porsche\u2019s GT division, does not rule out introducing lightweight packages to models other than RS in the future<\/strong>. However, the bottleneck for expanding the lineup is reportedly parts procurement (due to the Weissach Package\u2019s unexpectedly high popularity, expanding to more models could make sourcing parts difficult)<\/span>, so the actual outcome remains uncertain.<\/p>\n
