Heading to the Beautiful Coastal Town of Monterey<\/h3>\n

Today\u2019s story is about San Francisco. From July 28 to August 3, my family and I are traveling around San Francisco and Los Angeles. On the day after we arrived in San Francisco, the 29th, we drove to Monterey, a town known for its beautiful sea. Because the highway was a bit congested, it took about two and a half hours from San Francisco. The kids were sound asleep the whole time. San Francisco is known for its frequent fog in summer, and apparently the air is clearer and the views are better in winter<\/strong>, but Monterey was also a bit overcast and gloomy. (Maybe it\u2019s because I\u2019m a rain and fog magnet, haha)<\/span><\/p>\n

In Monterey, we planned to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium<\/a>, which I was really looking forward to, but the ticket line was incredibly long. At that moment, my eldest daughter said “I want to play in the sand,”<\/strong> so instead of the aquarium, we ended up playing on the beach… When you have kids, plans change all the time. So, we spent the first day driving five hours round trip just to play in the sand (laughs).<\/p>\n

Exploring San Francisco<\/h3>\n

The next day was for sightseeing in San Francisco. Our guide was my husband\u2019s colleague N, who knows San Francisco so well it\u2019s like he\u2019s a professional tour guide. He knows everything from the history of buildings, the very first places people settled in San Francisco, famous tourist spots, to the deep local secrets only residents know.<\/strong> No matter what you ask, he has an answer. Truly impressive.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

First up, of course, was the Golden Gate Bridge. We headed to a spot where you can see it. But before we left for the US, my husband and I joked, “Almost everywhere we go together, it\u2019s always thick fog, so maybe we won\u2019t see the Golden Gate Bridge at all this time either.”<\/strong> And sure enough…<\/p>\n

When we arrived at the Golden Gate Bridge, it was almost completely hidden in thick fog…<\/p>\n

N kindly suggested trying again in the afternoon, saying, “Maybe we\u2019ll see it then!” But the fog only got thicker, and everything was pure white with nothing visible. Trying to cheer up, we drove to a viewpoint overlooking downtown San Francisco. There were quite a few cars parked and many people outside enjoying the view, so we had high hopes… but this was the actual view.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Honestly, I wonder what everyone was looking at… Some people were taking selfies with the scenery behind them, but with that whiteout, nothing would show up in the photos, haha. My husband asked, “What\u2019s going on? Fog everywhere, in Japan and San Francisco… Have we angered the mountain gods somehow?”<\/strong> I thought about it, but I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve made any serious mistakes yet, so I guess I just have to accept my fate (lol). Next, we headed to downtown San Francisco.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The buildings were so huge I couldn\u2019t capture them all in one shot (though I realized later I could have just stepped back)<\/span>. This is the Palace of Fine Arts, built in 1915 to commemorate the opening of the Panama Canal.<\/strong> Over 100 years old! It has a vibe unlike anything you\u2019d expect in America, with a large pond and lawns inside the grounds. It\u2019s magical and very beautiful. By the way, it\u2019s free to enter and serves as a relaxing spot for locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n

To Sausalito, the Upscale Coastal Town<\/h3>\n

Next, we drove about 40 minutes from downtown San Francisco to Sausalito, a charming seaside town. It\u2019s incredibly beautiful\u2014like a mini USJ (Universal Studios Japan) (laughs). San Francisco\u2019s weather is fascinating: just 30 minutes ago, it was so cold I needed a long sleeve under a short sleeve, but in the neighboring town, it was warm enough for just a short sleeve.<\/strong> But even when it\u2019s warm, it\u2019s dry and comfortable, unlike the humid heat in Japan.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sausalito was so lovely that when I said, “I want to live in a town like this!” N told us a shocking fact: “It\u2019s a beautiful town, but house prices here have skyrocketed. Buying a house costs at least 100 million yen.”<\/strong> Minimum 100 million yen… ((\uff1b\uff9f\u0414\uff9f)) I wonder what kind of jobs people living here have… Wow.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For lunch, we went to Napa Valley Burger Co<\/a>. It seemed quite popular and well-reviewed because after noon the place was packed. I ordered a \u201cTurkey something\u201d burger, and the patty was meaty and the bacon was incredibly tasty.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Looking at this photo, you might think, “Oh, that\u2019s an easy amount to finish,”<\/strong> but it was actually quite large\u2014about twice the size of a Big Mac. Still, I ate it all, and N was surprised, saying, “Oh, you don\u2019t leave food behind? Even so, you didn\u2019t have to push yourself that hard…”<\/strong> But it was just really delicious. After lunch, it was finally time to visit the famous \u201cLombard Street\u201d with its steep slopes and sharp curves.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Since it\u2019s a famous tourist spot, many visitors were getting out of their cars to take photos. It\u2019s hard to tell from pictures, but from the very top, the slope is so steep it almost feels like a theme park ride. Definitely don\u2019t come here in a GT3 or any car with low ground clearance\u2014you\u2019ll bottom out for sure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In winter, the hydrangeas along Lombard Street wither, so the view isn\u2019t as vibrant, but in the summer tourist season, you can enjoy the full bloom of colorful hydrangeas. After wandering around town, we visited the original Apple Store.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know why, but even though it\u2019s similar in design to the Apple Store in Japan (I only know the Osaka one though)<\/span>, this one felt much more sophisticated and stylish. Maybe because both floors are all glass and very spacious? San Francisco\u2019s diverse population gives the store a truly global vibe.<\/strong> Even on a weekday evening, it was packed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Even the iPhones on display, which should be the same as in Japan, somehow looked cooler (laughs). Upstairs is a free space where people were working on laptops or listening to music on their iPhones. Next to an older couple with backpacks sat a funky young guy…<\/strong> It was a fun scene showing the wide range of Apple users (laughs).<\/p>\n

Traveling abroad like this really changes your perspective and is fascinating. I hope to soon create a lifestyle where I can write my blog at the San Francisco Apple Store and work while traveling around the world.<\/strong> That\u2019s the dream expanding during my stay in San Francisco.
