The Problem of Too Many Porsche Options<\/h3>\n

While browsing the official Porsche website to check out the 911 specs, I couldn\u2019t help but notice how many options you can choose from when buying a Porsche. Of course, it\u2019s great to be able to add everything you want, but the option costs alone can easily top 4 million yen<\/strong>, so that\u2019s not always realistic. Plus, it\u2019s a waste if you add something and later think, \u201cI really didn\u2019t need this.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, I asked my husband about the options he chose when he bought his 981 Boxster GTS in 2015, focusing on:<\/p>\n

\u2460 Options he\u2019s glad he added
\n\u2461 Options he didn\u2019t add but wishes he had
\n\u2462 Options he added but now thinks were unnecessary<\/p>\n

Boxster GTS Specs<\/h3>\n

The 981 Boxster GTS was delivered in November 2015. It\u2019s a 2015 model, left-hand drive, manual transmission, black interior (all leather)<\/strong>, and comes standard with the \u201cSport Chrono Package,\u201d \u201cSports Exhaust System,\u201d \u201cPorsche Active Suspension Management (PASM),\u201d and \u201cBi-Xenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) in black finish.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband often says \u201cIf you\u2019re buying a Porsche, sports chrono and sports exhaust are absolute must-haves on any model.\u201d<\/strong> On top of that, here are the options he added when ordering (note: option names are from 2015 and may have changed slightly since then):(Prices are from 2015)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

1) Options He\u2019s Glad He Added<\/h3>\n

My husband wanted a simple design and interior that wouldn\u2019t get boring over time. So, he did not choose the \u201cGTS Communication Package,\u201d which turns the center gauge red and adds red stitching to the black leather seats, among other things.<\/strong> Also,<\/p>\n

\u201cI like the kind of \u2018cool GTS\u2019 that looks like a regular Boxster at first glance, but if you look closely, you can tell it\u2019s a GTS.\u201d (Whether that\u2019s \u2018cool\u2019 or just quirky… haha)<\/span><\/p>\n

He mentioned that on a previous tour, someone was surprised at parting, saying, \u201cWait, this is a GTS!? I thought it was a Boxster S or something!\u201d<\/strong> That\u2019s just the right level of subtlety for him. So here are the four options he feels were definitely worth adding:<\/p>\n

\u2460 Power Folding Door Mirrors
\n\u2461 Roll-over Bar Painted Body Color
\n\u2462 Alcantara Package Delete
\n\u2463 Model Name Emblem Delete<\/p>\n

\u2460 Power Folding Door Mirrors<\/h4>\n

Without this option, you\u2019d have to fold the mirrors manually every time. When parking in a multi-story garage, attendants often ask you to fold the mirrors, and having to get out every time to do it manually is a hassle. He\u2019s really glad he went with power folding.<\/p>\n

\u2461 Roll-over Bar Painted Body Color<\/h4>\n

His Boxster\u2019s roll-over bar is painted white to match the body color. Normally it\u2019s black (there\u2019s also an aluminum option)<\/span>, and he thinks black would have looked cool too, but since few people paint it body color, he often gets compliments like \u201cThat looks beautiful.\u201d He\u2019s happy he chose the matching color.<\/p>\n

\u2462 Alcantara Package Delete<\/h4>\n

He deliberately deleted the Alcantara package. Although Alcantara might fetch a slightly higher resale price, he prefers leather seats overall. (For why he deleted the Alcantara package, see this separate article\u2193\u2193)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2463 Model Name Emblem Delete:<\/strong> He removed the \u201cBoxster GTS\u201d model name emblem and kept only the \u201cPORSCHE\u201d badge, giving the rear a cleaner look. Apparently, this \u201cPORSCHE only\u201d style is trendy in Germany.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

2) Options He Wishes He Had Added<\/h3>\n

Next, the options he hesitated on but now thinks, \u201cI wish I had added these.\u201d<\/strong> There are three main ones:<\/p>\n

\u2460 Seat Ventilation
\n\u2461 Auto-Dimming Mirrors (+ Rain Sensor Wipers)
\n\u2462 PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring)<\/p>\n

\u2460 Seat Ventilation<\/h4>\n

He has heated seats but wishes he had added seat ventilation. On hot summer days or when driving with the top down, ventilated seats keep you cool and make for a more comfortable drive. He later added this feature to his Panamera. The option cost was 152,000 yen.<\/p>\n

\u2461 Auto-Dimming Mirrors<\/h4>\n

This feature has a sensor on the rearview mirror that automatically dims it when bright headlights from behind are detected. However, what he really wanted was the rain sensor wiper function that comes bundled with this option.<\/p>\n

The rain sensor wipers automatically activate when they detect rain, but his Boxster doesn\u2019t have this, so he has to manually turn on the wipers whenever it rains, which is annoying.<\/strong> The option cost was 80,000 yen. Honestly, he wishes automatic wipers were standard from the start. \u30fd(\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)\u30ce<\/p>\n

\u2462 PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring)<\/h4>\n

This system works with the rear differential to brake the rear wheels and improve cornering. He says it really changes how the car handles curves, so he wishes he had added it.<\/p>\n

In addition to the above, although he personally doesn\u2019t need it, he says \u201cIf you listen to music in your car, you absolutely should get the BOSE sound system.\u201d<\/strong> That\u2019s because \u201cthe standard speakers have by far the worst sound quality of any car I\u2019ve ever owned.\u201d<\/strong> (laughs) He says it sounds cheap, like AM radio.<\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cI usually prefer to listen to the engine as my background music, so it\u2019s fine for me, but when I do turn on the stereo, I\u2019m shocked at how bad it sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

3) Options He Added but Didn\u2019t Need<\/h3>\n

Finally, the option he added but now thinks was unnecessary is:<\/p>\n

Gray Band Front Windshield<\/p>\n

This is a gray-tinted band at the top of the windshield that blocks direct sunlight, reducing glare and making it slightly harder to see inside the car. However, he says it didn\u2019t really make much difference, so it wasn\u2019t necessary.<\/p>\n

Also, although the Boxster GTS comes standard with PASM, my husband says that if it didn\u2019t, you should definitely add it as an option.
