This guide is specifically for models equipped with a <strong>Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM) system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>TPM is fitted to Porsche models from the 997 generation onward. <strong>It displays the pressure in each front and rear tire on the instrument cluster.<\/strong> The system is designed to help keep you safe by detecting and warning you about gradual pressure loss, whether from normal air seepage or a foreign object embedded in a tire. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(It cannot detect or warn you about a sudden pressure drop, such as a tire puncture caused by an abrupt external impact.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For this guide, I\u2019ll use our 971-generation Panamera as an example.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Comfort_or_Standard_Tire_Pressure\"><\/span>Comfort or Standard Tire Pressure?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before inflating your tires, there\u2019s one thing to check: <strong>which pressure mode you want your Porsche to use\u2014\u201cStandard\u201d or \u201cComfort.\u201d<\/strong> Dealers often set one of these modes before delivery, so it\u2019s worth checking and choosing the one that suits your preferences. Here\u2019s the difference:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u25a0 Standard pressure: The usual Porsche setup, with a slightly firmer ride<br \/>\n\u25a0 Comfort pressure: A slightly lower pressure for a softer ride and improved comfort<\/p>\n<p>On the touchscreen, go to \u201cVehicle \u2192 Vehicle Control \u2192 Tire Pressure Monitoring.\u201d Select \u201cComfort Pressure\u201d to use Comfort mode, or deselect it to return to Standard mode.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4317 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_7541-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One important point: <strong>in Japan, Comfort pressure is only approved for speeds up to 160 km\/h (99 mph), so the system will issue a warning if you exceed that speed.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(In Germany, the limit is 270 km\/h; the Boxster is also set to 270 km\/h in Japan.)<\/span> You may never drive faster than 160 km\/h on Japanese roads, but <strong>if you\u2019d rather avoid repeated warnings, Standard pressure may be the better choice.<\/strong> We prefer a firmer ride, so our car is set to Standard pressure.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Inflate_Porsche_Tires_Correctly\"><\/span>How to Inflate Porsche Tires Correctly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When inflating your tires, you\u2019ll refer to the tire pressure display on the instrument cluster\u2014but there\u2019s an important catch. <strong>Don\u2019t adjust the pressure based on the \u201cCurrent pressure\u201d reading.<\/strong> For example, if you want 2.5 bar and the display reads 2.2 bar, don\u2019t simply add 0.3 bar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s because the \u201cCurrent pressure\u201d reading doesn\u2019t account for tire temperature.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(The specified tire pressure is based on cold tires at 20\u00b0C.)<\/span> Most of us drive to a gas station before topping up, but driving heats the tires and increases the pressure. If you inflate them while they\u2019re hot, the pressure may be too low once the tires cool down.<\/p>\n<p>The Panamera owner\u2019s manual puts it this way:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">The pressure shown under \u201cTire Pressure \u2192 Current Pressure\u201d is for information only. Tire pressure varies with temperature. Never adjust tire pressure based on this reading.<\/p>\n<p>So what should you use instead? Check the <strong>\u201cPressure deviation\u201d<\/strong> reading in the Tire Pressure menu. It accounts for tire temperature and shows how far each wheel is from its specified pressure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4318 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8\uff082018-08-16-11.03.13\uff09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the image above, the right-rear wheel shows \u201c\u22120.1 bar.\u201d In other words, <strong>add 0.1 bar to the right-rear tire.<\/strong> Adjust the pressure using these readings until all four tires show \u201c0.0 bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you ask a gas station attendant to inflate your tires, don\u2019t say, <strong>\u201cSet it to 2.8.\u201d Instead, tell them, \u201cPlease add 0.3 bar.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Tire_Pressure_Changes_the_Way_Your_Porsche_Drives\"><\/span>How Tire Pressure Changes the Way Your Porsche Drives<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After inflating the tires this way, I took the car for a drive and immediately noticed how much lighter the tires felt and how much lower the rolling resistance seemed. On rough roads, the ride could feel a little bouncy, but on smooth pavement the car rolled along effortlessly. Through corners at a brisk pace, the tires felt planted, with little sense of flex. My husband said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cCome to think of it, when we took delivery of the Boxster, our dealer contact, H, told us, <strong>\u2018When adjusting tire pressure, always use the readings in the car\u2014not the gauge on the air pump.\u2019<\/strong> So that\u2019s what he meant! This is really important!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The owner\u2019s manual recommends checking tire pressure at least every two weeks, when the tires are cold. We check ours about once a month, but pressure tends to drop more quickly in summer, so regular checks are a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, despite writing all this like an expert, I\u2019ve never inflated a tire myself. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(At the gas station, my job is to tell my husband, \u201cAdd another 0.1!
