I also have an Instagram account (mostly posting Porsche photos)<\/span>, and when I scroll through my feed (if that\u2019s what it\u2019s called)<\/span>, I see so many beautifully shot photos of beloved cars. It\u2019s really enjoyable and, above all, a great way to learn about photography.<\/p>\n

I used to take car photos without thinking about composition at all, but since starting Instagram, I\u2019ve developed the feeling that \u201cIf I\u2019m going to take photos of my beloved car, I want them to look beautiful.\u201d<\/strong> So I\u2019ve become a bit more conscious about it.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, today I want to share what I think are the key \u201ctips for photographing your beloved car beautifully,\u201d<\/strong> based on what I\u2019ve researched and learned from my husband.<\/p>\n

5 Key Tips<\/h3>\n

Here are five important points I think are essential when photographing your beloved car.<\/p>\n

\u2460 Know the Scenery That Best Shows Off Your Car<\/h4>\n

Before shooting, it\u2019s important to think about \u201cwhat kind of scene will make my car look its absolute best.\u201d<\/strong> Even among Porsches, the two-seater open-top Boxster and the luxury sedan Panamera suit very different backgrounds.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

That said, \u201cthere\u2019s no absolute right answer\u201d<\/strong> because what makes your car look great depends on personal taste, sense, and even the body color.<\/p>\n

For example, with the Porsches we have at home:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe white Boxster with a red soft top suits natural scenery perfectly. The bright blue sky, the blue sea, and the green mountains make the pure white Boxster really stand out. On the other hand, the Night Blue Metallic Panamera, true to its name, looks great in dusk or slightly darker settings. Also, the Panamera suits urban scenery better than nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is the perspective we hold.<\/p>\n

\u2461 Decide on Your Composition (Concept)<\/h4>\n

Rather than shooting aimlessly, think about what kind of composition you want, such as \u201cI want to capture the contrast between the blue sea and the Boxster,\u201d<\/strong> \u201cI want to shoot the Panamera\u2019s rear view in the most beautiful way,\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cI want to highlight the logo clearly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I believe photos taken with this kind of thought bring out the car\u2019s charm much better.<\/p>\n

\u2462 Hone Your Photography Skills<\/h4>\n

Photography definitely involves technique. …Though I say this confidently, my husband often tells me things like \u201cWhy don\u2019t you study how to take cooler shots?\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cWhat exactly are you trying to shoot!? (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)\u201d<\/strong>… (-_-) Well, I\u2019m not a professional photographer, but I hope to at least acquire the basic knowledge and skills to take decent photos.<\/p>\n

Here are some points I\u2019ve learned and try to keep in mind:<\/p>\n

\u2460 Park with the tires slightly turned<\/strong>
\nSimply parking with the tires straight makes the photo feel very static, but turning the front tires slightly adds a dynamic feel instantly.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

If you want a photo without a dynamic feel, parking with the tires straight is better.<\/p>\n

\u2461 Use 2x zoom when shooting with an iPhone<\/strong>
\nModels like the iPhone X and iPhone 7\/8 Plus have two rear lenses: a wide-angle (1x) and a telephoto (2x). Usually, you shoot with the wide-angle lens, but that means you have to get very close, which distorts the car\u2019s shape due to perspective effects (the Boxster\u2019s rear looks exaggeratedly raised)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

So, switching from the wide-angle (1x) to the telephoto (2x) lens on the iPhone camera app and shooting from a bit farther away lets you capture the car\u2019s shape more naturally. Also, the image quality doesn\u2019t degrade at 2x zoom, which is great.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2462 Tilt the camera slightly<\/strong>
\nTilting the camera makes the ground appear diagonal, adding depth and making the car look like it\u2019s speeding (lol). Of course, shooting straight is good too, but if you want to add a little flair, tilting the camera is a nice option.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2463 Edit Your Photos<\/h4>\n

Photos taken with a phone are beautiful as-is, but often I feel \u201cIt would look better with a bit more saturation\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cAdding some highlights would really make it pop.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

For that, I use Google\u2019s photo editing app Snapseed<\/a>. It\u2019s free but incredibly powerful, almost like Photoshop. I especially like the blur feature; blurring the background a bit really makes the car stand out and can even save photos that didn\u2019t turn out perfectly (lol).<\/strong> Almost all my Instagram photos are edited with Snapseed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2464 Invest in a Good Camera<\/h4>\n

In the end… (lol) no matter how much I try with my iPhone or my somewhat old DSLR, it can\u2019t compare to my husband\u2019s Sony digital mirrorless camera, the \u201c\u03b17\u2162.\u201d<\/p>\n
