This is Mina, the administrator of the \u201cWelcome Home, PORSCHE\u201d blog. It\u2019s already the 4th installment of our interview series that started in May. This time, we spoke with Tomohiko Kimura from Osaka, a car enthusiast who has fallen in love with the thrill of the circuit and is enjoying a fulfilling car life.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Chapter 1. Current Cars and Car Life<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">1-1: About His Current Cars<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 What cars does Mr. Kimura currently own?<\/h5>\n<p>For the circuit, he owns a Ferrari F430 racing car, the <strong>\u201cF430 Challenge\u201d<\/strong>, a <strong>BMW M3<\/strong>, a Mazda <strong>ND Roadster NR-A<\/strong> for both commuting and circuit use, a <strong>Mercedes-Benz C-Class<\/strong> that his wife drives daily, and a <strong>MINI<\/strong> for his son\u2014five cars in total. He also once owned a Porsche Boxster for his wife. Looking back, almost all the money I\u2019ve earned through hard work has gone into cars (laughs).<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 A Boxster for your wife&#8230; that\u2019s enviable!<\/h5>\n<p>About three years ago, the first Porsche I bought was a Boxster. I\u2019ve always admired the <strong>Porsche GT3<\/strong> and dreamed of <strong>\u201cone day running on the circuit in a GT3,\u201d<\/strong> but at the same time, I thought, <strong>\u201cJumping straight to a GT3 for my first Porsche might be too much&#8230; I want to experience a regular Porsche first.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then one day, my wife, who had little interest in cars, saw the Boxster and said, <strong>\u201cThat car is really stylish.\u201d<\/strong> I thought, <strong>\u201cIf my wife says that, this is a step closer to the GT3!\u201d<\/strong> (laughs), so I bought a standard 981 Boxster.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 What about the interior and specs?<\/h5>\n<p>The body color is white, with a red soft top and interior. Since my wife uses it daily, I didn\u2019t add any sporty options like Sport Chrono. Still, when I first drove the Boxster after delivery, I thought:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAs expected from Porsche, as expected from a sports car.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s a basic 270-horsepower Boxster and slower compared to the 400-500 horsepower cars I usually drive on the circuit, it was incredibly fun. <strong>The light body makes it nimble, the engine pulls strongly and revs beautifully, and the unique German steering feel is fantastic.<\/strong> It really made me realize Porsche is a true sports car manufacturer.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">1-2: The Allure of the Circuit<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Do you remember your first time on the circuit?<\/h5>\n<p>Yes, very clearly. Before driving, I was extremely nervous and thought, <strong>\u201cThis is scary&#8230; I can\u2019t possibly drive here; I\u2019m totally out of place.\u201d<\/strong> But once I started driving, it was incredibly fun. I thought, \u201cThis is so enjoyable! I wish I had discovered circuits sooner!\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4485 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_7750.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 It sounds that fun! What\u2019s the appeal of the circuit?<\/h5>\n<p>I believe it\u2019s <strong>\u201cbeing able to fully unleash the car\u2019s performance.\u201d<\/strong> Sometimes I speed on the highway, but it\u2019s a completely different experience driving near the limit on a circuit. The first car I drove on the circuit was a <strong>BMW M3<\/strong>, and I was amazed thinking, <strong>\u201cIt can corner at such high speeds! The M3 has so much potential!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Driving on the circuit, not just on city streets, I truly felt the M3\u2019s real capabilities. The M3 is often called <strong>\u201ca wolf in sheep\u2019s clothing\u201d<\/strong>, and that\u2019s exactly how it felt.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Still, circuit driving sounds scary&#8230;<\/h5>\n<p>That\u2019s true. But after experiencing circuit driving, <strong>I actually find driving on public roads much scarier.<\/strong> People on circuits generally have better driving skills and strictly follow etiquette because <strong>any violation can lead to a serious accident immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, public roads have all kinds of drivers\u2014from beginners to elderly\u2014and there are also motorcycles and pedestrians. They often behave unpredictably, which is very frightening. <strong>Since I started circuit driving, I\u2019ve become much more conscious about safe driving on public roads.<\/strong><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/interview-kimuratomohiko\/2\/\">\u2192\u3010Next Page\u3011 The Joy of the Circuit and Driving a BMW&#8230;<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Chapter 2. Falling for BMW<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">2-1: Mr. Kimura\u2019s Childhood and Teens<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Were you a car enthusiast from childhood?<\/h5>\n<p>Yes. I\u2019m from the supercar generation, and my father loved cars, so naturally I grew to love them too. When I was in elementary and middle school, my father, who started his business around the time I was born, drove American luxury cars and Mercedes-Benz. As a kid, I thought, \u201cWow, that\u2019s amazing and cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In my late teens, I started thinking, <strong>\u201cIf I buy a car, I want a Mazda RX-7.\u201d<\/strong> Back then, it was trendy to drive aggressively on mountain roads and Osaka\u2019s Hanshin Expressway. I dreamed, <strong>\u201cOnce I get my license, I want to drive the RX-7 on mountain roads.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 So was your first car an RX-7 after getting your license?<\/h5>\n<p>No, actually&#8230; I got my license right after turning 18 and planned to buy an RX-7. Looking at used car magazines, I thought, <strong>\u201c400,000 to 500,000 yen&#8230; I can buy one if I work hard at part-time jobs!\u201d<\/strong> But when I told my father, he said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cNo! You should drive a sturdier car! I\u2019ll buy it for you!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Embarrassingly, I was a typical privileged kid, and my father had lost my older brother in an accident, so he didn\u2019t want to lose me to a traffic accident.<\/p>\n<p>He recommended a Volvo as a sturdy car, but at the time, Volvos were jokingly called \u201cdriving bricks\u201d (laughs), and as a teenager wanting an RX-7, I wasn\u2019t attracted to it. When I told my father this, he said, <strong>\u201cOkay, then let\u2019s check out BMW.\u201d<\/strong> That\u2019s how I first visited a BMW showroom.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 I understand your father\u2019s concern and care&#8230;<\/h5>\n<p>At that time, during the bubble economy, BMW 3 Series were called \u201cRoppongi Corolla.\u201d I had a prejudice thinking, <strong>\u201cBMWs won\u2019t get you any girls!\u201d<\/strong> so I wasn\u2019t keen on visiting the showroom.<\/p>\n<p>I was a naive young man who thought, <strong>\u201cRX-7s with loud engines are definitely cooler!\u201d<\/strong> (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>But then, at the BMW showroom, one car caught my eye: the BMW 635CSi. <strong>A luxury car costing over 10 million yen, called the \u201cworld\u2019s most beautiful coupe.\u201d<\/strong> I was instantly captivated by its elegant, sporty vibe and asked my father to buy it for me.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Wow&#8230; getting a new BMW right after getting your license&#8230;<\/h5>\n<p>Sorry, it\u2019s embarrassing even to say. That BMW 635CSi was amazing. <strong>\u201cWhat is this fun handling and engine? So this is BMW\u2019s \u2018joy of driving\u2019!\u201d<\/strong> I became a BMW fan, forgetting about the RX-7.<\/p>\n<p>Until I was over 30, I wanted to keep driving BMWs rather than Porsches or Ferraris.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">2-2: To the Circuit with BMW<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Did you continue driving BMWs after that?<\/h5>\n<p>Yes. I drove several BMWs and owned an M3 at 31, which was an eye-opening experience. I thought I knew BMW\u2019s greatness, but the M-badged BMW amazed me even more.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4488 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/bmwm3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Though the ride was a bit harsher, it sharpened BMW\u2019s driving performance and sporty nature, making even city driving very enjoyable.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Why did you start circuit driving then?<\/h5>\n<p>I liked tuning cars, so I modified the M3\u2019s wheels and suspension for my satisfaction. But <strong>\u201ctweaking a finely balanced car causes various issues.\u201d<\/strong> I ended up visiting several shops specializing in BMW tuning and repairs, finally settling at one with a strong circuit focus.<\/p>\n<p>Listening to the staff and customers there, I gradually became interested in circuits, even though I initially had no interest. <strong>One day, I was invited to drive on the circuit together, and at 33, I drove Okayama International Circuit for the first time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Have you been hooked on the circuit ever since?<\/h5>\n<p>Not exactly. The first time driving the M3 on the circuit was fun, but maintenance costs became huge, and I thought, <strong>\u201cI can\u2019t keep this up.\u201d<\/strong> Still, I started entering races.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4486 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_7749-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><br \/>\nI joined the Euro Cup, a grassroots race mostly featuring foreign cars, to test how my driving stacked up and what level I was at.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 My husband is also hooked on Gran Turismo, trying to see if his driving skills measure up (laughs).<\/h5>\n<p>I totally get that. I practiced Gran Turismo on PlayStation more seriously than my own kids (laughs). What started as lighthearted racing turned into a full obsession. <strong>I practiced at least twice a month, trying to shave off tenths of a second and gain even one position, pouring all my pocket money into tuning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But tuning increased the risk of breakdowns, so it was a cycle of fixing and breaking\u2014quite tough.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Did your wife say anything about this?<\/h5>\n<p>At first, she opposed and criticized it, but eventually she gave up, thinking <strong>\u201cNo use arguing, just do as you please.\u201d<\/strong> (laughs) Then one rainy day, I crashed badly on the circuit when the tires lost grip. I was fine, but the car was nearly totaled.<\/p>\n<p>I was really down, thinking, <strong>\u201cI\u2019ve spent so much money, played around, and wrecked a precious car&#8230; what a fool I am.\u201d<\/strong> I stayed away from racing and circuits for 4-5 years.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">2-3: Wanting a Porsche GT3<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 What kind of car life did you have after that?<\/h5>\n<p>During my break from circuits and racing, I enjoyed BMW sports sedans but always thought, <strong>\u201cSomeday I want a Porsche GT3.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIf the BMW M3 is this fun, the Porsche GT3 must be unbelievably fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Having experienced circuits, I realized Porsche is amazing. <strong>The M3 requires costly brake and radiator upgrades for circuit use, but Porsche doesn\u2019t need any of that.<\/strong> You can take it straight from the showroom to the circuit and it performs incredibly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4489 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_7759-800x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, oil and water temperatures remain stable even after many laps, allowing consistent lap times. Other cars can\u2019t do that. <strong>Porsche invests heavily in unseen areas beyond just specs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 So that performance is Porsche\u2019s true appeal?<\/h5>\n<p>Yes. <strong>It\u2019s amazing that Porsche combines circuit-ready performance with everyday usability.<\/strong> The high quality backed by German craftsmanship is a major attraction.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4491 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_7757-800x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Among my acquaintances, many who started circuit driving with other brands switched to Porsche and never looked back. <strong>Seeing that, I\u2019ve set my ultimate circuit car goal as the GT3.<\/strong> That\u2019s the dream of any car lover.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Why not buy one now? (laughs)<\/h5>\n<p>N-no&#8230; new ones are way too expensive. But actually, <strong>I\u2019ve been to Porsche dealers, picked options, and almost ordered a GT3\u2014twice!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both times, I canceled at the last minute. I started thinking, <strong>\u201cMaybe the GT3 isn\u2019t ready for me yet.\u201d<\/strong> People around me even say, <strong>\u201cKimura-san isn\u2019t meant to have a GT3.\u201d<\/strong> (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>Then about eight years ago, I spotted a Ferrari for consignment sale.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/interview-kimuratomohiko\/3\/\">\u2192\u3010Next Page\u3011 Bringing a Ferrari to the Circuit Leads to Crazy Things&#8230;<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Chapter 3. Aiming for the Porsche GT3<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">3-1: Encounter with Ferrari<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Oh&#8230; suddenly Ferrari!?<\/h5>\n<p>Ferrari was an even more distant dream than the GT3 back then. But it was a time when <strong>used Ferraris dropped significantly in price due to the Lehman Shock.<\/strong> On a whim, I went with my son to a Ferrari dealer in Kyoto just to see one up close, and that was the start.<\/p>\n<p>Though casual, the sight of a bright red Ferrari F430 instantly captivated me. The dealer even offered to start the engine, and hearing that sound hooked me even more (laughs).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI want a Ferrari,\u201d<\/strong> I couldn\u2019t suppress the feeling, and after canceling GT3 orders twice, I impulsively ordered a Ferrari.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 An impulsive Ferrari purchase&#8230; that\u2019s wild!<\/h5>\n<p>No, no! I didn\u2019t just pay casually\u2014I risked everything, dipping into my personal savings (laughs). <strong>I remember driving home with my heart pounding, thinking, \u201cWhat have I done?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few weeks later, the Ferrari was delivered. The moment I got in and started driving my dream car, I was shocked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhat is this? A toy?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Having driven high-quality German cars like BMW, the Italian car felt flimsy, like a toy.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it was fast in a straight line with a cool F1-like engine sound, but <strong>it wobbled in corners, had unstable handling, and the ride felt like a soft luxury car.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was shocked thinking, \u201cMy dream Ferrari has such driving performance&#8230;\u201d Of course, it\u2019s a matter of personal taste, but as a German car fan, it felt lacking.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Even after taking such a big leap of faith to buy it&#8230;<\/h5>\n<p>Exactly. Plus, the Ferrari drew a lot of attention on the streets. <strong>The loud engine and cool design made people stare intensely.<\/strong> If I were someone who liked showing off, that would be great, but I\u2019m shy and couldn\u2019t handle the attention.<\/p>\n<p>Before long, I found myself sneaking out late at night, quietly starting the Ferrari and driving 4-5 laps on the Hanshin Expressway before returning home (laughs). That\u2019s no way to enjoy owning a Ferrari, so I planned to sell it after six months. Then I discovered a Ferrari tuning shop.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">3-2: The Tuning Shop That Changed Everything<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Here we go again&#8230; tuning shop!<\/h5>\n<p>Yes, again (laughs). This shop was circuit-focused. When I told them, <strong>\u201cI bought my dream Ferrari, but it\u2019s completely undriveable,\u201d<\/strong> they said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cNo, no, Kimura-san. Don\u2019t underestimate Ferrari.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure, the stock Ferrari is comfortable and easy to drive even for women. But <strong>with some tuning, you\u2019ll discover Ferrari\u2019s incredible true potential.<\/strong> Our customers run this Ferrari at Suzuka Circuit in amazing times,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>I thought, \u201cNo way a Ferrari can do that!\u201d but I was intrigued. <strong>I ended up asking them to change the suspension and tires to make it an amazing Ferrari.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 And back to the circuit?<\/h5>\n<p>Yes. Since I couldn\u2019t enjoy the Ferrari on the streets without unwanted attention, <strong>I decided the circuit was the only place to drive it.<\/strong> After upgrading the suspension, I went back to the circuit for the first time in about five years.<\/p>\n<p>It was incredible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat is this? It drives amazingly well!\u201d I was positively shocked, and my view of Ferrari changed completely. I fell back in love with circuit driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4492 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_7748-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I believe Ferrari shines on the circuit. Some say, \u201cIt\u2019s a waste to drive a Ferrari on the circuit; it damages the car,\u201d but <strong>Ferrari is just as suited to the circuit as Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">3-3: Future Outlook<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Are you still deeply into circuit driving?<\/h5>\n<p>Yes. I\u2019m so into it that <strong>I film my runs with a GoPro every time and enjoy watching the videos with a drink afterward (laughs).<\/strong> It\u2019s a world of self-satisfaction, but it\u2019s very enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4493 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/kimura1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I was a teenager, I dreamed of driving an RX-7 on mountain roads, but that never happened. Now I\u2019m fulfilling that dream on the circuit, feeling like a boy again every time I drive.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Is your goal to buy a Porsche GT3 still alive?<\/h5>\n<p>Absolutely! Actually, about two years ago, I bought a 911 Carrera S. I thought the 911 was a versatile car for both commuting and fun driving, but I sold it after 10 months. Though I admired the 911, the Roadster was enough for city driving, and I only drove the 911 about 20 days in those 10 months&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I realized I want to drive hard on the circuit, so if it\u2019s Porsche, it has to be a GT3. That\u2019s my single goal now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5a\">\u2014 Lastly, what does a car mean to you?<\/h5>\n<p>Hmm&#8230; that\u2019s a tough one. <strong>It\u2019s my source of energy and a partner.<\/strong> When I achieve a goal at work, I buy the car I want, which motivates me for the next challenge. Even in tough times, the car comforts me and helps me keep going. <strong>It\u2019s a partner through both hard and happy times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Others might think, <strong>\u201cA grown man still going to circuits is childish,\u201d<\/strong> but I don\u2019t care.
