I have experience with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/porsche-macan-testdrive-202105\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">early<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/%e3%83%9d%e3%83%ab%e3%82%b7%e3%82%a7-%e3%83%9e%e3%82%ab%e3%83%b3%e3%81%a8%e9%81%8e%e3%81%94%e3%81%99%ef%bc%91%e9%80%b1%e9%96%93%ef%bd%9c%e3%82%ab%e3%82%a4%e3%82%a8%e3%83%b3%e3%82%84911%e3%81%a8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mid<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/macan3-part1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late<\/a> types, and their characters differ significantly.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I want to <strong>report on the early model\u2019s features through comparisons with the mid and late models.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30179\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30179\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/6F85D30D-AB54-4761-AC30-4BD832DFD868-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Rear of early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The tail lights are not connected on the early model<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Macan_S_early_model\"><\/span>Macan S (early model)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This Macan S is almost a bare-bones basic Macan. <strong>It comes with standard 18-inch wheels, standard suspension without PASM, no sport exhaust, no Sport Chrono Package\u2014completely stock in terms of driving options.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/D332C22E-161C-4721-84A5-0B9C9AFEEA34-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Shift lever of early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At first, I didn\u2019t have high expectations, but <strong>the moment I started the engine, the power was incredible.<\/strong> Even without a sport exhaust, the cold start produces a surprisingly loud roar. This is a kind of intensity you rarely experience in mid or late models.<\/p>\n<p>Surprised by its boldness, I shifted the large, somewhat nostalgic shift lever into D and set off.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_impressions_on_the_road\"><\/span>First impressions on the road<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>From the moment it starts moving, it\u2019s unmistakably a \u2018Porsche.\u2019<\/strong> This is truly a \u2018Porsche.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the mid and late models are Porsches too, but the early model\u2019s character is noticeably richer. The tires grip the road with a smooth firmness, without any odd lightness. The steering response is tight with no looseness, yet it doesn\u2019t feel overly twitchy.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the moderate steering weight, subtle steering inputs are easy, and the car responds very linearly to even the slightest movements.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/814AF364-FF07-4ECD-BEFA-CEDFF9FCD9A5-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, the car\u2019s reaction to steering input is expected, but with this Macan, the speed of steering input synchronizes vividly with the car\u2019s movements.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like there\u2019s an extra dimension in the steering parameters compared to ordinary cars. Both the amount and speed of steering input are transmitted with remarkable precision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is exactly the sensation you get in a 911.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why driving it feels so rewarding. It\u2019s as if the driver\u2019s feelings and intentions are directly communicated to the car, which never betrays the driver\u2019s will. It\u2019s truly a horse-and-rider unity in a sports car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/059C9B94-24FA-486E-AD6F-C2945A6DD88E-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Standard wheels of early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ride comfort is also excellent. It maintains a consistently pleasant ride in all situations, <strong>which is hard to believe for a standard suspension without PASM.<\/strong> I think the wheel and suspension combination is just right. The standard 18-inch wheels perfectly balance with the standard suspension.<\/p>\n<p>Grinning from ear to ear, I sped through the city toward mountain roads.<\/p>\n<p>My wife said, &#8220;<strong>You can tell this Macan is different within 2 seconds of getting in<\/strong>,&#8221; and I don\u2019t think she was exaggerating.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine_and_PDK\"><\/span>Engine and PDK<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Turning on Sport mode and switching to manual, I used the paddle shifters to pull the engine in 2nd gear before shifting to 3rd. At high revs, the PDK shift sounds \u201cwhoosh!\u201d with a change that sounds like a 911\u2014or even a GT3.<\/p>\n<p>This is <strong>honestly an effect you can\u2019t get with the mid or late model PDKs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Downshifts are also fantastic, with the engine revving up and the tach needle dancing vividly. The shift speed is superb. With a racing-like roar, the downshift happens.<\/p>\n<p>This is Porsche.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/FDB2D70F-FAB3-469E-A8AC-385C13C680D6-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driver\u2019s seat of early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later, the owner of a 718 Cayman GTS who rode along was also surprised by the PDK\u2019s intensity. \u201c<strong>The shift sound is better than the 718!<\/strong>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, if you turn on the sport exhaust on the early Turbo or GTS models, the shift sound and exhaust roar are so intense it might even surpass a 911, so I highly recommend trying it if you get the chance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2FC8B329-24DC-459A-8885-42A0859E93FF-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Sport tailpipes of early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30189\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/655D0C7C-E3D1-4B7C-906F-3EF919E9F21D-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The engine\u2019s power and torque delivery are superb, and despite being a turbo engine, it feels like power builds strongly as the revs rise. The rev feel is precise and smooth. The tach needle climbs steadily, as if to say, \u2018This isn\u2019t just any practical car engine.\u2019 It feels faster than the 340ps figure suggests.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Handling_and_ride_comfort_impressions\"><\/span>Handling and ride comfort impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Handling is, needless to say, excellent.<\/p>\n<p>As the model progressed to mid and late generations, handling became lighter and more agile, yet still gripped the road firmly, but <strong>the early Macan is the exact opposite\u2014heavy and substantial.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, this heaviness doesn\u2019t mean the steering itself is physically heavy; rather, <strong>it feels like the entire car has a high density, with suspension arms and bushings all made of hard, rigid materials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/465123F1-AFA6-41B2-B003-82141BA67DF8-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving the early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Because of this, it inspires a strong sense of security. It moves exactly as intended, and the driver can feel detailed road information through the steering, so <strong>the driver can place full trust in the Macan while driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The brakes are also impeccable and very controllable.<\/p>\n<p>The brake feel, which responds precisely to pedal pressure, is true Porsche quality\u2014there\u2019s no compromise just because it\u2019s an SUV. It\u2019s truly Porsche braking.<\/p>\n<p>Slowing down, downshifting with the paddles, enjoying the loud blip sounds, and turning the wonderfully refined steering wheel while accelerating out with strong traction through each corner is an absolutely sublime moment.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Summary\"><\/span>Summary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Riding the early Macan again after a while was very satisfying. <strong>I can wholeheartedly say it\u2019s \u2018good.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I thought it was good when it was first released, but riding it again now, it\u2019s truly wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>We are expecting delivery of a Mercedes GLB at home soon, but honestly, I thought I should have gone for a used early Macan.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how great the early Macan is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/9F52DD94-408C-4F5A-AF26-9895A33A7BD1-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If I were to give advice to those considering buying an early Macan, <strong>I\u2019d recommend the air suspension model.<\/strong> The air suspension on the early Macan really offers excellent ride comfort. Incidentally, my brother, who generally dislikes Porsche and often criticizes it, says, \u201c<strong>The air suspension ride comfort on the early Macan is better than any luxury car\u2019s air suspension I\u2019ve ever ridden.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, the air suspension allows lowering the ride height, which lowers the center of gravity and makes the car much sportier.<\/p>\n<p>For those who prioritize the distinctive sound of the early model, I recommend a vehicle with the sport exhaust or the GTS. Especially the early GTS has an unparalleled roar. I doubt anyone would be unsatisfied with that.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30180\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/9B9830E6-DDF4-43F9-A9EF-02A3C170EDA6-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Early Macan S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Personally, <strong>I\u2019d aim for an early Macan Turbo with air suspension.<\/strong> The GTS is great too, but the Turbo with sport exhaust is powerful enough to rival the GTS.<\/p>\n<p>Good-condition early Macans will likely become increasingly scarce in the used market. Prices are expected to remain high, so be mindful of common issues like PTM failures, and maintain PDK and differential oils properly for a very worthwhile purchase.<\/p>\n<p>For those who prioritize practicality, ease of driving, and quietness that even their spouse can comfortably enjoy, I\u2019d recommend the mid or late Macan.
