As of the time of writing this blog, the GLS580 has already been removed from the Japanese lineup, and currently, the only new models available are the GLS400D and the AMG GLS63.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/gls-husband-202007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered purchasing the GLS400d and even test drove it.<\/a> At that time, I was somewhat underwhelmed by its surprisingly light and nimble driving feel, feeling it lacked the weighty presence one might expect from a Mercedes with an &#8220;S&#8221; in its name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/B2E883D4-1D1D-4426-BDEE-21CD5CA81F01-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This time, it\u2019s the higher-grade GLS580. Besides the obvious difference in powertrain compared to the GLS400d, there is another major distinction.<\/p>\n<p>That is the <strong>latest Mercedes suspension system, the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL (with Dynamic Curve function)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this suspension is not available on the Japanese-spec GLS400d and is exclusive to the GLS580. I clearly remember feeling <strong>a bit disappointed wishing it could be fitted to the GLS400d<\/strong> back then.<\/p>\n<p>In this review, I\u2019ll share impressions comparing it to the GLS400d and also discuss the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL (with Dynamic Curve function).<\/p>\n<p>As usual, <strong>this blog focuses primarily on driving impressions, so for detailed evaluations of usability and interior space, please refer to other media sources.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Appearance_and_First_Driving_Impressions\"><\/span>Appearance and First Driving Impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Seeing the GLS parked, it\u2019s undeniably huge. It barely fits within a coin parking space, and from the side, it almost looks like an \u201celephant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With overwhelming presence, it <strong>exudes an extraordinary sense of luxury and atmosphere.<\/strong> Climbing up into the rather high driver\u2019s seat and settling into the seat reveals a lavish, magnificent interior. Truly befitting Mercedes\u2019 top-tier SUV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Almost every comfort feature is included, so there\u2019s hardly anything to complain about.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/F2F8D270-0AF7-4683-868B-94ED560A964C-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30136\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/27E43109-B7C2-4D4A-BD9F-E2A1D61F7AE5-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580 meter panel\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30131\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30131\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30131\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/6277F6D7-E51F-4D19-A464-E9DCD07B9FAE-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580 rear seats\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rear seats. Spacious thanks to the Chauffeur Package.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The generously sized seats with numerous adjustment options are truly comfortable. This is definitely a car made for long-distance driving.<\/p>\n<p>Starting the engine and slowly pulling away, I couldn\u2019t help but exclaim, \u201c<strong>So light!!<\/strong>\u201d It\u2019s hard to believe this giant weighs over 2700 kg. Thanks to the ISG (Integrated Starter Generator electric motor assist), it moves forward smoothly. <strong>The steering is also light,<\/strong> making it hard to tell whether you\u2019re driving a large or small car.<\/p>\n<p>At first, I wondered if this was the same light feeling I experienced with the GLS400d. As I increased speed, around 40-50 km\/h, I began to feel a more solid grip and weightiness through the steering that I hadn\u2019t noticed in the GLS400d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Oh, this might be pretty good!<\/strong>\u201d I said to my brother as we headed toward the mountain roads.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_City_Streets_to_Winding_Roads\"><\/span>From City Streets to Winding Roads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Driving through busy city streets toward the mountains, <strong>the throttle response at takeoff is so sharp that it takes some getting used to.<\/strong> You have to press the accelerator gently or the car will lunge forward. I tested the suspension over uneven pavement from roadworks at low speed to check its movement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/E7AFB95D-EAFF-4BD4-8819-F069FA937769-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580 tires\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First, I drove in Comfort mode, but <strong>at low speeds typical of Japanese city streets, there was a slight trembling vibration that was a bit noticeable.<\/strong> Since it\u2019s an air suspension, some of this might be unavoidable, but given the high expectations for Mercedes\u2019 top SUV, it was a little disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, <strong>I think the ride comfort of the BMW X7 35d I previously test drove was better in city driving, and even compared to the Cayenne, the tire rolling feel of the Cayenne is smoother.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That said, this is a <strong>very fine, nitpicky comparison at a high level,<\/strong> so please keep that in mind. Of course, for normal driving, almost no one would say the GLS ride quality is bad\u2014it\u2019s definitely comfortable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30139\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30139\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30139\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/074079D9-DA60-4CFE-A9A0-79E6277F1397-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL features a Curve mode<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next, I activated the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL and drove in Curve mode. This system uses cameras to monitor the road ahead and electronically controls the 48V electric hydraulic units on each wheel, the air suspension\u2019s electronic dampers, and air springs. However, at low speeds, it doesn\u2019t feel much different from Comfort mode.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the city behind, I entered a tight winding section.<\/p>\n<p>For such a tall, large SUV, this is not a road you want to push hard on. <strong>In Comfort mode, body roll is quite pronounced.<\/strong> It\u2019s nowhere near as sporty as a Cayenne. The body leans heavily, and if you\u2019re not careful, the trajectory will widen significantly outward.<\/p>\n<p>Trying Sport mode, the suspension stiffens a bit, but the sway remains large. <strong>If you have family onboard, you really need to drive carefully to minimize lateral G-forces.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then, I switched Curve mode back on.<\/p>\n<p>The GLS transforms completely. I often say \u201cit transforms,\u201d but this time it\u2019s on a different level. It\u2019s hard to believe it\u2019s the same car. <strong>On mountain switchbacks at around 30-50 km\/h, the car doesn\u2019t sway at all.<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t lean. It\u2019s like a sports car\u2014no, better than a sports car in terms of roll control.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30137\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/67000B96-E35C-448B-857D-59B5268369A2-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580 center console\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL prevents occupants from swaying by tilting the vehicle inward during cornering, and its effect is tremendous. It feels like driving on a banked curve, truly a \u201c<strong>magic carpet<\/strong>.\u201d While Porsche\u2019s PDCC also reduces roll, it does so by electronically controlling stabilizers, stiffening or loosening them.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>this E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL instantly extends the suspension on the outside of the curve to balance the body tilt against centrifugal force.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it truly stays flat.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the strength of this system can be adjusted, and I tested the middle setting, which I think is a natural fit for Japanese winding roads. At higher speeds, it allows a slight roll. <strong>So it\u2019s best to adjust the Curve mode intensity according to speed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engine_Impressions\"><\/span>Engine Impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Impressed by Curve mode, I sped through the mountain roads and opened the throttle on a straight stretch.<\/p>\n<p>Even with 489 hp from the V8 twin-turbo, the heavy body means it\u2019s not as fast as the horsepower figure might suggest. <strong>That said, there\u2019s no feeling of power shortage.<\/strong> It has ample acceleration in any situation.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <strong>there\u2019s absolutely no turbo lag.<\/strong> The brief gap before the turbo kicks in is well assisted by the ISG. The torque delivery is so smooth it makes you forget it\u2019s a turbo engine, reminiscent of the old Mercedes 5-liter naturally aspirated V8s. This effortless driving experience is very Mercedes-like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30134\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/6597C4F9-FC64-4957-9109-9B849E31D59A-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What impressed me most about this engine was its sound. <strong>It sounds really good.<\/strong> It delivers that deep, throaty V8 growl typical of Mercedes, and you can hear the engine sound clearly even while driving around town.<\/p>\n<p>In Sport mode, the sound gets louder and much sportier. My brother, who has owned several AMG vehicles, said, \u201c<strong>The sound is so good, AMG isn\u2019t really necessary.<\/strong>\u201d Indeed, it\u2019s a great-sounding engine and recommended for those who love the feel of Mercedes V8s.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Impressions_on_Uneven_Roads\"><\/span>Impressions on Uneven Roads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Royu Driveway tunnel, Royu Tunnel, has quite an undulating surface. It\u2019s a great place to check straight-line stability, and with the GLS580, the impression differs greatly between Comfort and Curve modes.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, at low speeds in the city, the difference wasn\u2019t very noticeable, but <strong>once you pick up some speed, the difference becomes clear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30140\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30140\" class=\"size-large wp-image-30140\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/BEE4ECF4-44CF-4DE0-B57B-B2EBAE59C2A6-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580 suspension monitoring\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suspension movement can be monitored according to road conditions<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Comfort mode, you can see the body moving up and down in response to the road undulations, but in Curve mode, the sway is reduced. This is very noticeable. You can actually see the suspension\u2019s movements on the monitor, clearly showing the suspension extending and compressing to handle the bumps. The straight-line stability at this point is very high.<\/p>\n<p>Comfort mode already offers a fairly flat ride, but <strong>if you want an even flatter ride, the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL is definitely worth having.<\/strong> This is truly a ride quality worthy of Mercedes\u2019 \u201cS\u201d badge.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overall_Evaluation\"><\/span>Overall Evaluation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>This car is undoubtedly an SUV that prioritizes luxury. While Curve mode allows for somewhat sporty driving, it\u2019s fundamentally a luxury vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you want truly fast driving, you should choose the AMG GLS63.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It seems focused on comfort at higher speeds on rural national roads and highways rather than city driving. Therefore, in very low-speed urban driving common in Japan, the setup sometimes feels a bit out of place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/7F193938-AC45-496D-9C09-7DC7DA36E64E-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Mercedes-Benz GLS580\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What you want from such a large SUV depends on your needs, but if you want comfortable long-distance grand touring with your family, the GLS is an excellent choice. Its true strength lies in the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s unfortunate that the GLS580 with this feature is no longer available,<\/strong> but I sincerely hope Mercedes-Benz Japan will make this option available for the GLS400d as well.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a great option that\u2019s sadly not selectable in the Japanese market.<\/p>\n<p>If the Mercedes SUV with E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL makes a comeback someday, I would personally love to drive it again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"GLS580 4MATIC My younger brother, who occasionally appears on this blog, bought a car as usual.
