51 Ferraris Written Off<\/h3>\n

Many of you may already know, but due to the recent Typhoon No. 21, 51 Ferraris at an authorized Ferrari dealership on Rokko Island in Hyogo Prefecture were completely damaged by seawater flooding.<\/strong> The article states the total damage was in the billions of yen, but some say it could be as high as 3 billion yen.<\/p>\n

The dealership had prepared for the typhoon by laying blue tarps and sandbags at the entrance, but the storm surge far exceeded their expectations and flooded the store. The shop was submerged up to about one meter, and all the Ferraris soaked in seawater were written off, including some cars that had already been sold.<\/strong>

Thinking about the feelings of the dealership staff and those involved\u2026 it\u2019s more than just shocking. Who could have imagined the typhoon would cause such devastating damage?<\/p>\n

The Situation on Rokko Island That Day<\/h3>\n

Rokko Island is an artificial island jutting out into the sea. On September 4, when Typhoon No. 21 struck directly, the island was quickly flooded by the storm surge, and many containers were swept away.<\/p>\n

While browsing online articles, I suddenly wondered:<\/p>\n

\u201cWait, aren\u2019t there Porsche and BMW dealers around there too?\u201d<\/p>\n

Curious, I first looked into Porsche. As expected, the dealership was temporarily closed on September 4 due to the typhoon\u2026<\/p>\n

But by yesterday, their social media was already posting used car listings as if nothing had happened. So they were okay.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I also checked BMW, and similarly, they were posting weekend event info as if all was normal.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Even though the Ferrari, Porsche, and BMW dealerships on Rokko Island are just a stone\u2019s throw apart, being on the seaside versus slightly inland made all the difference in their fate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nearby Luxury Foreign Car Dealers<\/h3>\n

\u201cCome to think of it, aren\u2019t there Mercedes-Benz and Bentley dealers around here too?\u201d<\/strong> I wondered and looked it up (I\u2019m from Hyogo Prefecture but still not very clear on the exact locations of these islands and lands)<\/span>. Here\u2019s what the map looks like:<\/p>\n

Ferrari, Porsche, and BMW are on \u201cRokko Island,\u201d<\/strong> Mercedes-Benz is on \u201cPort Island,\u201d<\/strong> and Bentley and Lamborghini are near \u201cMeriken Park.\u201d<\/strong> The Mercedes-Benz dealer on Port Island likely also faced significant storm surge risk, but<\/p>\n

they say, \u201cWe\u2019re open and thriving as usual!\u201d\u2026 That resilience almost brings tears to my eyes.<\/p>\n

Learning from Typhoon Preparedness<\/h3>\n

Although other dealers besides Ferrari didn\u2019t suffer major damage this time, we can\u2019t be complacent. I recently spoke with someone working in construction in Kyushu who said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw news footage of the big damage typhoons caused in Kansai, but their typhoon preparedness is way too lacking. We live in Kyushu where typhoons come every year, so we take much more thorough precautions. People in Kansai should really study typhoon preparedness going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s true. Just as power outages gradually recover and we start to feel safe, a major earthquake hits Hokkaido. We really need to seriously reconsider where we live, where we park our cars, and how we prepare for future typhoons.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also heard that residential areas along the coast south of my home, like Ashiyahama and Nishinomiyahama, suffered severe flooding, and the artificial island Kansai Airport is also in a tough spot.
